What concerns me now is how Putin is going to react to Russia being removed from SWIFT and the fact he seemingly doesn’t hold control of Ukraine yet.

There’s no way he’s plotted this move with any chance for it to backfire or fail, so what is the next step?

Violetparis · 27/02/2022 09:48

Will watch that documentary bluetongue, thanks for the recommendation.

ajandjjmum · 27/02/2022 09:51

@dementedma

I imagine Special Forces are already looking at how to take Putin out
Shame they didn't do it a few months ago - but I know I shouldn't think that!
BronwenFrideswide · 27/02/2022 09:52

@CovidCorvid

Press reporting that Ukraine have obliterated a load of Checynan fighters en route to Kiev including a senior general. They were thought to be a kill squad on their way to hunt down Ukraine politicians.
I read that too, a particularly barbaric squad by all accounts so their demise is good news.
ChocolateDigestivesMmmm · 27/02/2022 09:52

@Damnloginpopup Thank you for starting the threads, I'm finding it very useful to compare news and public opinion in the west and in my country. It is hard to know who and what to believe. The national TV channel in my country quoted Russia Today last night saying that Zelensky has been evacuated from Ukraine. So everyone thinks he has fled. But on Twitter I can see he is posing videos saying he is still in Ukraine and fighting.

Igotjelly · 27/02/2022 09:56

The Judo Federation have kicked him out. Small wins! Bet he’s furious.

OvaHere · 27/02/2022 09:59

I'm finding the videos of captured Russian soldiers incredibly sad. Most of them look like confused boys, barely men at all. All cannon fodder for an old, megalomaniac nut job. I doubt many would be there if they had any real choice.

Tigersonvaseline · 27/02/2022 09:59

The Russian ballet tour here is getting cancelled. Not huge news but whilst I feel sorry for the dancer's And know it's not them I think it all helps too add pressure.

Now I want Putin's compound in Biarritz seized.

Tigersonvaseline · 27/02/2022 10:01

But what happens if Russia use's these thermobaric weapons??

Motivation to fight is so important.

The Ukrainian defenders are fighting for their homeland and their families.

What are the Russian soldiers fighting for?

Igotjelly · 27/02/2022 10:03

@Tigersonvaseline

It would be horrific. Unfortunately not the first time they’ve been used by Russia and the US have used them before too.
DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 27/02/2022 10:05

@ChocolateDigestivesMmmm thank you for your perspective. I totally understand that it’s all very well for us to demand tough, immediate action, but entirely different if you’re in the line of fire if the West calls it wrong and escalates it into a NATO/EU war.

I don’t think he’ll go for a NATO country next - if anything, he’ll go for an EU country that’s not NATO, but not Sweden/Finland.

I agree. Those innocent Russians earning an innocent bob are sad collateral damage.

However they are damage caused by their president of their country. I'm just hoping this does mean that Russians will find the strength to oust their leader.

I don't think it'll do anything to halt Luton unfortunately - I fear it'll wind him up more and there's only one way this can and will end.

Tigersonvaseline · 27/02/2022 10:08

Well I know but would that be a red line?

Are civilians and soldiers getting Oxygen mask's?

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 27/02/2022 10:09

I don't know. I think putin is having a rude awakening at the moment. Nothing's going well for him and tomorrow will bring a run on the banks in Russia.

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 27/02/2022 10:11

I too am concerned how he will react after tomorrow.

So Austria, Cyprus, Ireland or Malta then?? Grin

Interesting insight into putin's psyche here.

Another article just published by Lawrence Freedman, Professor of War Studies at Kings College London:

For?

If we’re into worse case then respirators (“gas masks”) certainly won’t provide protection against the effects of thermobaric warheads and used on their own only provide a limited amount of protection against only some chemical weapons.

dreamingbohemian · 27/02/2022 10:27

Lawrence Freedman has a new article this morning that you may find hopeful:

dreamingbohemian · 27/02/2022 10:28

Oh sorry, x-post with Desdemona !

Igotjelly · 27/02/2022 10:32

I find those articles really useful. It’s interesting to get past the hysteria in the media.

ChocolateDigestivesMmmm · 27/02/2022 10:32

@DazzlePaintedBattlePants No you're right, I don't think he would go for a NATO country next, unprovoked...but if NATO were to intervene in a tough way, like some people want...I don't know. We're a NATO county. We would have to go up against Russia too. We have Russia not far and also Serbia, with Russian weapons. And the whole Balkan region nursing historic grievances against each other, which are egged on by Russian propaganda. Things just feel very...on knife edge.

GallopingHighRoad · 27/02/2022 10:37

@FatFredsFriedEgg
Malta is in the EU. It is also a place where there is some Russian money because of tax loopholes that mean wealth taxes on European property can be avoided.
