What did we see last night..?

We had been away for a few nights and travelled back quite late. Towards the end of our journey, this was about 2am, we were driving along an A road in a rural area when something crossed the road in front of us in full headlights for about 3 seconds. It was about the height of a person, maybe 6 feet or over, but had short powerful legs and hips which seemed to move in a circular fluid fashion. It was not a deer because it stood on two legs. This was in the midlands and the area is traditional rolling fields and woodland. In this particular spot there are no houses or buildings, nearest is over a mile away. We drove back today as its only 7 miles from home to look at the road layout and whatever it was moved into a wide bowl shaped field dropping down to a stream. Any ideas?

@GallopingHighRoad this thread made it on the Daily Star Facebook page.

Meant to post the photo...

Seems not. It's a town or 2 over from us. DH grew up from 12 onwards much closer to it than we now live & he's never heard of it either Confused

From what I'm reading, the activity seems historic though [/quote]
Oh right...I want to go there as well now. I thought it might be full of people looking for strange things!

The stuff I have seen about dogs "disappearing", I presume means they were off lead, out of sight of owner, then didn't come when called.

I'd guess so too, though I know of 3 dogs that's happened to here, & when I was a kid up north, so I'm not so sure if that's so unusual on it's own. That's a lot of missing peoples bodies they've found there though, that's definitely odd

debwong · 26/02/2022 19:15

@RockinHorseShit

I can't believe Clapham Wood has somehow passed me by & it's nearby too. Thanks for the heads up, very interesting reading
Can you point me to what you are reading, please? I can't see anything on this thread.
SkiingIsHeaven · 26/02/2022 19:17

I think that @GallopingHighRoad and @Laiste need to meet for a coffee sometime. They seem to be very in tune with one another.

Another MN friendship.

RockinHorseShit · 26/02/2022 19:23

I just googled it @debwong, but this was a good start...

Ignore the satanic cult bit though. That's ignorance

I still think we need an MN trip to ...somewhere we can hope for sightings of folkloric creatures, who will be singing under their breath "can't touch this".
EmmaH2022 · 26/02/2022 20:38

One thing I've noticed about folklore books...
well, the ones that catch my eye...you never see any copies going for 50p like you often see with fiction. So people want to hang on to them I guess.

LynetteScavo · 26/02/2022 20:43

Just marking my place as I don't live a million miles from the sighting, and if I ever saw something like this no one would ever believe me.

Furries · 26/02/2022 20:53

I drive through country lanes, in the evenings, once a week to go food shopping. Never had a problem with it before. Tonight, all I kept thinking about was this blooming thread and was dreading something appearing in the headlights!

EmmaH2022 · 26/02/2022 21:01

I can't drive anymore and I rather miss country drives. I had to make a point of going on them. I used to be worried about deer appearing out of nowhere. Never once occurred to me I'd see something mythical!

JohnStonesMissus · 26/02/2022 21:21

Me too! We could just have a folklore thread. Everyone would come along and tell us we are entirely mad.

Owen Davies runs this now

If I had the money and the time, I think I'd be interested though it might be too much of an interesting thing!

I've come back to this thread. Seems like quite a few of us live near here. We used to have our business just down the road and I kept my horses in the fields in Staverton. I can't believe I used to go to the fields in the dead of night to check on the horses! One weird thing I saw was early hours driving back into Daventry and 2 lads in fancy dress carrying some inflatable animals! I've lived there most of my life and have seem some weird sights over the years 😬

Ooh what have you seen?

The two lads with inflatable animals - wouldn't even notice that on the night bus in London!

I've just had a little snigger at one or two of the comments underneath that article Grin

JohnStonesMissus · 26/02/2022 22:37

Yes we need a folklore, myths and strange beasts thread!

JohnStonesMissus · 26/02/2022 22:41

@Easterbunnyiswindowshopping

Google tells me there were Bigfoot sightings in your area in 2018 op.
Not sure how I missed this but anyone have further information?
GallopingHighRoad · 26/02/2022 23:38

A Bigfoot sighting in 2018 does not ring any bells. Many years ago I heard of a big cat sighting further along the road by the canal near Napton. It was posted in some detail on a forum but I cannot find it now. One thing I do know is that whole area from Leamington to Banbury, across to Towcester and back up to Banbury is immense covering some 150 square miles and is mostly rural with no dual carriages ways and plenty of places for wildlife to hide away.

I see no reason why this thread cannot continue with general chimera-type pots. Best to keep it to UK though as it will be more meaningful.

Clapham Woods is a load of nonsense as far as I can see, one hysterical and obsessive person conflating some very sad but mundane murders with the woods. Walk there all the time and have never felt weird.

Kingley Vale on the other hand... I'm not a very 'woo' person but that place is by equal measure enchanting and terrifying.

JohnStonesMissus · 27/02/2022 00:21

Some of you on here may remember the series "These Woods are Haunted" aired last year, it's American but still really good, reconstructed on true events, I'm just watching about the Wisconsin Dogman, Emma you might like this, be warned, though, it's quite scary! It's on YT if you want to watch it...

I'm always up for a coffee :)

There are a million little rural pubs to meet up in. Or Daventry Costa .... (the later would def be less atmospheric obvs Grin)

To summerise my own experiences outdoors .... (we wont go there about indoors)

  1. Big cat sighting. 2010ish.
  2. Everdon Woods going silent panic. 2016ish.
  3. White shapes on the road nr Byfield. This year.
  4. This one is a bit more 'out there' and has been going on since i started driving as a teen where i grew up in London. Much more open to some hearty poo pooing - i often see people standing at the side of the road. It can be on country lanes or the motorway or where ever. People, different heights, usually more than one, sometimes 2 or 3, sometimes 5 or 6. Just standing still together. Solid dark grey, no colours. I see them briefly, but i see them clearly instant iyswim.

I must say when i had dogs i used to walk for miles and miles over the fields and empty countryside, but never saw anything odd when out with them. Perhaps big lollopy dogs dispel weird things?
