What did we see last night..?

We had been away for a few nights and travelled back quite late. Towards the end of our journey, this was about 2am, we were driving along an A road in a rural area when something crossed the road in front of us in full headlights for about 3 seconds. It was about the height of a person, maybe 6 feet or over, but had short powerful legs and hips which seemed to move in a circular fluid fashion. It was not a deer because it stood on two legs. This was in the midlands and the area is traditional rolling fields and woodland. In this particular spot there are no houses or buildings, nearest is over a mile away. We drove back today as its only 7 miles from home to look at the road layout and whatever it was moved into a wide bowl shaped field dropping down to a stream. Any ideas?

@EmmaH2022

Thank you OP, really appreciate it.

Laiste, you are much better with online maps than I am!

John, I would definitely be up for that. Maybe a warmer night would be better!

Yes I am so up for it! I just need a bit longer to plan, I bet there's some lovely pubs we could stay in.

Is that what kangaroos actually look like? It looks like it's been on steroids Confused

I’m just wondering now that maybe the beast needs a name, now he is famous. I think it’s a he. Goaty McGoatface or similar.

This is brilliant. OP is doing a sterling job for local tourism.

Are there any fields surrounded by quite high boundaries? Maybe this is a real-life version of the film The Village.

How about Sid?
JohnStonesMissus · 24/02/2022 01:05

OP there's a book you might be interested in it's called "I know what I saw" by Linda S Godfrey, modern day encounters with monsters of new urban legend and ancient lore.....oddly enough the picture on the front is very similar to your drawing (minus the hair), I've not read it but I might have to buy it.

GallopingHighRoad · 24/02/2022 01:16

All sounds good. Hissing Sid.

Or what about something topical….Vladimir?
Vlad.

It’s raining hard and windy again out there. It’ll be looking for someone’s porch or shed to huddle down in.

Just seen this in the local newspaper. I live close to this spot and pass by daily. There's a few livery yards around, we used to keep our horses there. Maybe an escapee? 😬

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/02/2022 15:56

I can't see what that video is at all Grin

OP As you officially discovered It, it's your choice.

I prefer Hissing Sid to Vlad though. History will not confuse Hissing Sid with anyone else!

John some nice hotels round there. Do you drive? An MN trip would be hilarious. OP I don't suppose you want to be expedition leader?

crispinglovershighkick · 24/02/2022 16:13

the black stretchy thing is VERY creepy but rings a bell

For whatever reason the goatman/demon/bipedal deer hasn't upset me but 'the black stretchy thing' and the chap in the ditch have given me the heebie jeebies for days.

I have missed both of these - are they on this thread? I mostly read OP posts, have maybe missed some others.
EmmaH2022 · 24/02/2022 17:11

Oh just looked again
Stretchy thing is 2D thing.

Reminds me of the stage play version of Ghost Stories with the car section of the play.

AhhWoof · 24/02/2022 18:03

We can block book Fawsley Hall for a weekend and go wild. Hissing Sid, ghostly coachman... Northamptonshire is our weird oyster!!

Laiste · 24/02/2022 18:22

@AhhWoof don't forget to fit in a pic-nick in Everdon Stubbs. If you end up all alone you might find it falls deathly silent for you - and as the fear of God courses through your veins you can sprint back to the car Grin

Vebrithien · 24/02/2022 19:22

@EmmaH2022 I originally described the "black stretchy thing", and another poster got creeped out, with the familiarity.

It was 2D, like something off of a printed page, angular tall and thin, but with limbs in proportion. It was just that it was able to stretch one leg out, to cover across the whole road, and the rest of it followed.

I am so up for that As an MN trip, it also needs to feature a midnight feast Maybe one night for creature hunting and one night just for laughs?

Vebrithien I missed the stretchy bit the first time. It certainly sounds familiar from something folkloric that I've read but I can't recall what.

JohnStonesMissus · 24/02/2022 21:37

I do drive Emma!

I found this linked from the coast to coast am website which is American - you’re reaching far and wide OP!

Am still keen to hear what @Marcipex has seen in the countryside??

Me too..
EmmaH2022 · 24/02/2022 23:15

Yes @Marcipex
I will put it in the anthology - From MC Hammer to the Minotaur

Maybe the title should have "my my my my my" in brackets?

Or does that hit the wrong note?

Sounds like a Dementor 😵

GallopingHighRoad · 24/02/2022 23:35

Evening folks. Have just come back from another ride in the sticks after an evening out. Relaxed journey. No goat man, wallabies, poachers or ostriches. Just saw a herd of velociraptors coming out of the local filling station with some bottles of wine. Thought that was really odd. Every other time it has been cider.

What are we going to call this beast then? Hissing Sid was from some song back in the 1980's I think. Nominations for a name needed. Mine is Baggy (as in Bagot Goat).
