Things we don't need in 2022 like we did 10 years ago

Just a Sunday thought remembering how we used to get phone top ups

A lot of those things were visibly on the way out in 2012, but still very much mainstream. Sainsburys and Tesco still had large DVD sections until about 5 years ago. It's only in the last couple of years that sales have decreased to tiny numbers.

Disposable cameras were long gone by 2012
Again no.
We buy disposable cameras every year to use with young people for part of the work we do.

I live in London and have just taken delivery of my 60+ Oyster card. Free travel on trains, buses, tubes and trams throughout the London area. It is probably my most treasured possession!

justasking111 · 04/02/2022 14:43

Friends got married they had disposable cameras for all the guests. Thank goodness they did the official photographer had a fire all pictures gone so their wedding album consists of guests pictures

Namechangedforspooky · 04/02/2022 14:50

Not quite the same but staff WhatsApp groups have replaced the need for emergency contact lists for staffing gaps or urgent messages.
We still have them as back up but 10 years ago it was so much more time consuming!

JaninaDuszejko · 04/02/2022 15:18

Netflix streaming was around in the mid 00s

Netflix came to the UK in 2012, because we already had free streaming with iplayer etc people weren't sure if it would catch on.

I have 2 on my desk right now! My job comes with a car. The lease company always put them in the “accident pack” that comes with the car. My dc take them on school trips/cub camp etc. It is getting harder to find anyone to develop them though.
thegcatsmother · 04/02/2022 19:35

Namechanged You make the assumption that your staff have Whatsapp. I don't, so HR needs an emergency contact for me. We had to update the list in the office last week.

RaraRachael · 05/02/2022 08:04

I hate being part of the staff WhatsApp group. I wouldn't mind if it was just for staff info but it's clogged up with stupid jokes etc that I just can't be arsed with.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/02/2022 08:07

Used sensibly, a staff WhatsApp group could be very useful. What's needed are some basic rules that it is only used for essential work communications and a moderator who deletes messages that don't meet the criteria.

PuppyMonkey · 05/02/2022 08:14

I do quite miss the thrill of getting the Love Film DVD through the post and frantically opening it to see which one off your list they’d sent. Seems so quant now.Grin

Pemba · 05/02/2022 08:39

Can still remember adverts for Lovefilm! And then did Amazon take it over (I remember them emailing offering free trials), and then later it turned digital and was renamed as Amazon Video and later Prime Video. Is that what happened? I did use to find it useful when the free content included with a Prime subscription was labelled Prime Video and content you had to pay for was labelled Amazon Video, it was easier to distinguish. I think they fudged it deliberately hoping people would end up accidentally paying extra.

I know Netflix also began by sending out DVDs, but did that happen in the UK?

justasking111 · 05/02/2022 09:28

When DS was at university they rented love films 2001 was a popular students thing

topcat2014 · 05/02/2022 09:31

I have a landline for broadband, doesn't everyone?

PuppyMonkey · 05/02/2022 09:32

Yes I remember Love Film got took over by Amazon.

I’m not sure how Netflix started here. I think I was vaguely aware of it because people kept saying “you’ve got to watch Breaking Bad on Netflix” and I thought “pay a subscription for TV - are you mad?” Then I finally succumbed and joined in 2014 or so, but it was well-established by then.

Not anymore - we have fibre straight to the house into its own little box.

However - we still have a landline (as I think it just comes with the deal) and we have a telephone which is not cordless. So always guaranteed to have a working phone in the house getting its power via the phone line.

(until that stops in a few years time)

We have a separate group for "chat" which I left but nobody seems to moderate the work group and it full of smutty talk which I hate
JaninaDuszejko · 05/02/2022 17:31

We only use Whatsapp groups for specific things at work (certain times when we work 24/7), HR aren't keen on them because of confidentiality. I've always been the most senior person on them and I would stamp out anything inappropriate but my workplace isn't like that so it's not been an issue.

RampantIvy · 05/02/2022 18:01

We don't have a work WhatsApp group. Why would we need one? We use Teams while we are working and don't have a group outside of work, the exception being the friendship groups people might have made through work.

Our HOD has all of our phone numbers and if there is anything really important that she needs to contact us about outside of working hours she will ring each of us individually.

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 05/02/2022 21:31

We got a team WhatsApp group at the beginning of the pandemic because we were having huge issues with the vpn and needed to be able to contact each other without being logged into Teams
