Just a Sunday thought remembering how we used to get phone top ups

@AppleKatie

Landline (although maybe I was a late ditcher!)

I’d already ditched dvds by then and CDs were just for the car.

We still have a landline. 2022 and we still have no flipping mobile signal.

My car strongly disagrees!!

I still prefer proper books. I have some DVD's on order. Mostly old programs I'm sure they're going to stop showing. I might have to buy a couple of spare DVD players & hope I can still get the leads to connect to new tvs. Or something? (Maybe transfer to A hard drive??)

I need to do something re music, but NO idea what. Luddite.

I still have a landline and had to use it recently when my iPhone froze.

10 years ago, doesn't seem much of a jump back in time, but that's probably because I haven't moved forward with technology fast enough!

My biggest 'improvement' has been whatsapp -chats & calls. It's made communication with my friends, especially those overseas SO much easier & cheaper!! So much better than emails & expensive phone calls!!

Nearly everything has been replaced by a phone. Alarm clock, camera, music device, games console, calendar etc etc.

Twopenny · 31/01/2022 18:41

To add to CDs & DVDs: video game discs/cartridges.

I stopped buying console games in my teens. Was therefore very surprised when I went into Game to buy a couple of Switch games as Xmas gifts, and literally bought two cases that were empty except for a bit of paper with a download code inside. Why they even bothered with the cases, I don't know.

I'm generally very pro- digital media and not having loads of books/films/CDs to store but I'm not sure we are quite there with games - the recipient couldn't actually play with their games on Christmas day because the Nintendo store was inaccessible and they couldn't download them.

Bonnealle · 31/01/2022 18:43

Taking a camera, phone, book, laptop, etc. out with you. You can do pretty much everything on just a phone now. Also buying foreign phone cards to call people on holiday.

Less having to remember passwords and reset them all the time, thanks to facial recognition / Apple authentication.

Oyster cards have gone.

More phone storage, no longer need to regularly delete photos and videos

Boiling taps - no more kettle

@Lesperance

I agree with facebook. I still have loads of books and CDs though, CDs are good for car journeys and I like real books because I can lend them to people (and borrow them).
Our car has a music player that takes an sd card full of music instead of CDs. It us brilliant. The newer models don't have this so you use the music on your phone. It also takes music on usb sticks. Just got a new TV and you can plug in a large usb stick and record programmes to it.
ChristmasCrackered · 31/01/2022 18:47

Thinking about it, I don’t think there’s been very much technological change since 2012, in comparison to the decade before that when smart phones came out and social media became a thing.

Bebethany · 31/01/2022 18:48

10 years ago I was in the medical team for the rehearsals of the Olympic Ceremonies, it was the best 8 months of my life! 😋😋😋😋😋

Thinking2041 · 31/01/2022 18:48

@LeggyLinda how much do you spend on top ups a month?

tryinghardnottocry · 31/01/2022 18:53

Travel agents. I havent booked a package holiday in 10 years. Shoe repairs I just bin my shoes now
Agree with both of these.

Actually I bought knee length boots last Christmas in the sale for £40.. Have worn them since September. Needed reheeling £18 ! If they’d been any older I’d have been tempted to get a new pair instead. Plus it’s more hassle going into town twice then getting a replacement online.

tryinghardnottocry · 31/01/2022 18:58

Agonizing whether to buy a 256mb SD card or push the boast out for a 512mb

The other day, bought 512GB ( 2000 times the size of a 256MB) SD card for £23

On the left-hand side of the cheque is the print date when the cheque book was printed - and we see cheques quite regularly that are 6 plus years old
Roxy69 · 31/01/2022 19:08

Books! Now I'm devastated if this is really what people are thinking.

I still use an old fashioned, very LOUD mechanical alarm clock as well as the phone, if I need to get up at some unearthly hour. Putting it on the other side of the room is best - you have to get up to turn the bugger off.
MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 31/01/2022 19:11

The correct bus fare. Just tap and go.

Mennex · 31/01/2022 19:16

Books (for me), A4 pads of lined paper for secondary kids - they seem to do virtually all homework online! DVD, CD. landline were already long gone for me.

More recently (covid) - heels, season tickets for the train, external hard drives, christmas cards, cable tv.

thegcatsmother · 31/01/2022 19:16

I still have a desktop and will buy another one at some stage. It's easier for me.

@chocolateorangeinhaler

To leave the house.

Wfh and everything now delivered. We're all heading towards being in our own little prison cells.

I share your unease at some people's enthusiasm for the life of a caged mouse. Mercifully quite a lot of people still like to go out and interact and are not wholly reliant on big tech coroporations. And yes, I use a mobile phone and the Internet a whole lot - but there are plenty of apps I won't touch because they involve so much exploitation and sharp practice (Uber, etc).

I think some of the posters on here ought to go and read The Machine Stops by EM Forster...
