Things we don't need in 2022 like we did 10 years ago

Just a Sunday thought remembering how we used to get phone top ups

OP posts:

Anyone remember phone books? In London we used to get a pile of them, four residential, a big yellow pages, a local yellow pages and I seem to remember a separate BT business directory too. All those poor trees! This morning I got a tiny local business directory shoved through my door. I am afraid it went straight in the recycling.

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

I'm 60 so I'm still young enough to have caught up with everything online such as banking and social media but for anyone older than me it is a very lonely world especially if you cannot leave your home. Most of my elderly patients still rely on cheques, have no way or understanding of getting on line and are totally isolated from the modern world. Many don't speak to anyone for days on end.
My parents are 78 and 83 and use mobile banking, have mobiles, a tablet and Netflix!
Payitforward55 · 31/01/2022 19:29

@Pemba

Why hair colour? I was just about to go up and dye my hair with a kit actually, not done it for ages. What makes you say that, Payitforward55?
Sorry I replied but it didn't come through to you. Just that I'm over the chemicals going aux natural but my hair grows super light. It's kinda in at the moment so far better not having to dye it all the time

@Thecurtainsofdestiny

Satnav. I didn't have a smart phone in 2012 so had a separate satnav.

I still receive and write cheques!

I still don't use my phone as a satnav cos sometimes there's no coverage. So I still have a Tom Tom that works on gps

Facebook. It's 2022... no one cares what you did at the weekend Brenda!!!

dualcabbageway · 31/01/2022 19:43

Someone mentioned an Oyster card, I'm an occasional visitor to London and
I've used contactless for the last few years. However I miss being able to see my journey history so I have just resurrected my Oyster card Smile

Agreed. I'm sick to death of gurning faces with plates of cake or any such rubbish. Who cares?
BABAHOTEL · 31/01/2022 19:44

I still use an Oyster card as it makes filling out my tax return a lot easier!

Pemba · 31/01/2022 19:47

Thanks Payitforward55 So when you say light do you mean grey or what? Bit confused.

I am obviously out of the loop. I am 50s and I do like the feeling of covering my greys (which I have had since very young, not all over). The chemicals are obviously not ideal I agree. When I was younger I'd use henna as its natural, but it's quite a faff.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 31/01/2022 19:49

I still use an Oyster card too.

lissie123 · 31/01/2022 19:56

Fuel
Heels
Wet signatures on documents
USB sticks
Cheque books
Photo albums

JuergenSchwarzwald · 31/01/2022 19:59

@frazzledfragglefromfragglerock

Landline phone. Completely unnecessary!
Depends where you live (or work). Mobile signals are awful in some places.
JuergenSchwarzwald · 31/01/2022 20:04

Photo albums do people not do wedding albums anymore? I would have thought people would want a paper version they could look through

Chocolatehamper · 31/01/2022 20:06

@MrsPerfect12

Cd, dvds, books
Books!! We'll always need books!
Somethingselfdeprecating · 31/01/2022 20:13

I was just about to mention ‘The Machine Stops’!
A depressingly and eerily similar world is emerging…Confused

Somethingselfdeprecating · 31/01/2022 20:14

Sorry that was supposed to be a reply to @Wreath21

Chocolatehamper · 31/01/2022 20:24

@Riapia

A kindle just doesn’t smell as nice as a new book.
Hallelujah!! The sheer joy of curling up with a brand new book! A pleasure my teenage daughter enjoys too, much to my delight!!
adulthumanfemalemum · 31/01/2022 20:27

@thewhatsit

And I don’t think I’ve used more than about 10 cheques my whole adult life (and even then, mostly grandparents sending them etc) and that is a fair bit longer ago than 2012.

What has always interested me though is are cheques still used in the States?

I remember that still in the noughties friends in New York literally used to use cheques to pay their rent and bills and things and I always found that incredible. I was surprised because to me, cheques stopped being used after the 90s. Even pre internet banking for a good while we all used standing orders and direct debits set up manually and on the phone with the bank I think…?

Also when I last went to USA, admittedly 4 years ago now but they didn't have contactless or chip and pin, people still signed for credit card purchases.
horseyrider · 31/01/2022 20:30

Fitness DVD's, now it's all apps on the TV.
Bedroom TVs

OpheliaTrousersnake · 31/01/2022 20:36

@ChristmasCrackered

Less having to remember passwords and reset them all the time, thanks to facial recognition / Apple authentication.

Oyster cards have gone.

More phone storage, no longer need to regularly delete photos and videos

Boiling taps - no more kettle

WTF? Where have Oyster cards gone?!

(Moved out of London about 3 years ago, and was using mine daily until then...)

I still have to delete texts on my phone as it will only store 20. It doesn't take photographs.

Cavementality · 31/01/2022 20:57

Torches, calculators, maps, payment cards etc. We now have apps for these on our phones!

oviraptor21 · 31/01/2022 21:09

I'm pretty near London and never seen a lamppost charger.

How can anything be faster than an Oyster? It's literally one tap ..... Hmm

oviraptor21 · 31/01/2022 21:10

PS Still using my Oyster every time I get on the train. As others said, it just feels safer to have a single, separate card for it. And I have auto top-up on so it requires no maintenance.

ThistleTits · 31/01/2022 21:16

@Infinitemoon

Newspapers. I used always buy the Sunday paper. I just don't feel the need now as there is always so much to read online already.
Same
Oblomov22 · 31/01/2022 21:22

I use loads of these still.
Printing at home, USB sticks, cash.
