Just a Sunday thought remembering how we used to get phone top ups

We are wonderfully old fashioned I think 😂

I have a wicker basket for shopping. Have a milkman deliver milk eggs orange juice, use the bakers, butcher's, greengrocers in village.

Have a Kindle though prefer real books but kindle great for in the bath.

Still have landline, traditional radio, cd player, dvd player. No sky etc. I remember getting mains gas!

Still use cheques for church things

Paper map in the car can't stand satnav.

@RampantIvy

Does anybody else print off paper copies of flight boarding passes?

Yes. I don't trust my phone

Quite right. What if you ran out of battery?
Plantsandpuddlesuits · 01/02/2022 18:55

I thought of another one...we are still avid users of the library. Weekly!

RaraRachael · 01/02/2022 19:01

I print off paper copies of hotel bookings, flight /concert tickets etc just in case there's a problem with my phone.

Technology is great....... as long as it's working properly.

mizzo · 01/02/2022 19:10

I feel like some sort of relic living in the land time forgot reading this Grin

Yes, I do, if I recall a lot of people got stuck abroad when the NHS covid pass app failed and they couldn't get their flights, would have been avoided if they had printed a paper copy to show

Yep

Was very glad of this when the ticket scanners at Schipol complete refused to read my phone.

User0458832 · 01/02/2022 19:21

Obviously a printer is still needed now...

Mennex · 01/02/2022 19:45

yes I think the pandemic had extended the life of the home printer for awhile!

I think you'll always need paper backups for things like boarding passes and QR codes. I've been to too many airports where my phone couldn't get a signal or I didn't have the right contract to ever make that mistake.

I can't stop and read a paper map when I am driving on my own in an unfamiiar city centre. I assume you never drive alone @Plantsandpuddlesuits?

Fuckedoffisanunderstatement · 01/02/2022 21:30

Sat nav
CDs
DVD Player

SquirrelG · 01/02/2022 23:05

@Plantsandpuddlesuits - if you are wonderfully old fashioned then so am I, although I don't even own a kindle!

Milkmen haven't delivered here for several years, and cheques are obsolete (I live in NZ), but otherwise I still use the same things as you.

SquirrelG · 01/02/2022 23:27

Believe it or not people who drove alone managed to find their way around unfamiliar city centres once upon a time! People are losing their power of actually working out how to do things using their own brain.

justasking111 · 01/02/2022 23:35

I used to study the map write out exits on a piece of paper and keep it on the passenger seat. Worked okay

D0lphine · 01/02/2022 23:43

Going to the bank.

New banking apps that are so much more handy (Monzo, Starling).

Facebook! 🤣

Sky telly.

Skinny jeans.

D0lphine · 01/02/2022 23:45

I still read real books though because I love a charity shop book bargain!

I used to be able to easily find my way around Leeds city centre. Since then new roads have been built, there is a new one way system, old road have been closed off and there is much much more traffic so you can't see the road markings to work out which lane you need to be in. I defy anyone who has never driven in Leeds to try and find their way around on their own without a satnav.

I recently ended up driving round in circles in Newcastle because the route I used to take is now for buses only. A paper map won't tell you this.

Unlike you I simply don't have the memory of an elephant to memorize an A-Z and the one way system to do this. I can remember a motorway journey though. For example M1 to junction 42, M62 to junction 32, then follow the signs, but a complicated city centre? Nope.

OperationRinka · 02/02/2022 08:41

London cab drivers have always been able to drive around London while keeping track of one ways and bus lanes without a sat nav, but they did have to study for months and restructure their actual brains to do it.

MarmiteyCrumpets · 02/02/2022 09:17

Awards shows (Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys etc). Still hanging on but with barely anyone watching or caring.

A lot of the rules that apply to cars don’t apply to London cabs, eg they can use bus lanes without penalty, so it’s not a particularly fair comparison.

We do too, just in case our phones are playing up.

Technology is great, but it can fail and it isn't flawless.

Maybe in time I might stop doing that, but for now I am more comfortable with a paper copy as a backup.

JaninaDuszejko · 02/02/2022 18:41

Have a milkman deliver milk eggs orange juice, use the bakers, butcher's, greengrocers in village.

We have milk deliveries (so much better for the environment) and a veg box. Made all the panic buying and shortage of supermarket delivery slots before the first lockdown a lot less stressful knowing we were getting regular deliveries of dairy and veg.

Yes, awards shows are starting to look very passe, especially the Oscars.

Who wants to spend a whole evening watching super-rich luvvies pat each other on the back? I only watch them for the fashion, and I can get all that in 5 minutes on YouTube the next day.

My DH literally can’t remember routes he has done many times before because he’s totally reliant on a Sat Nav. I always drive alone and have never had a Sat Nav. I happily drive long distances without one and even if I get lost can find my way out without one or getting stressed.

I can. When DD went to university I could remember the way to her halls. I can also find my way to where she lives now. I tend to have my satnav on for the journey because it redirects me to avoid traffic delays.

I can drive to Devon from Yorkshire without a satnav because I can remember the major roads, but I wouldn't then be able to find a specific address in Exeter, for example, without a satnav. I just don't have that kind of memory, and I doubt that most people do.
