North west thread

Noting there is a thread for the east side, I thought a north west thread was needed.

--Also I am very bored at the moment waiting for dc to fall asleep, and this felt like the perfect way to spend the time.

Any other NW mumsnetters here? Let's talk schools, food, leisure....and so on Grin

@iklboo

A barm hey, I’m going to guess you live around Preston?

No - barm is very prevalent in Manchester, Salford & surrounding areas. None of your 'roll' or 'bread cake' fancy ways round here! 😄

Until you get to Oldham and it's a muffin!
Livpool · 18/01/2022 15:00

Hi @Scoose! At least it is dry here today for a change!

Oh and we say barm here too. Although I on went in a few dates from a guy from the Wirral once and he called it a 'batch' - I was appalled

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 18/01/2022 15:03

Bacon barm for me, well cooked bacon and brown sauce

Another one from Liverpool checking in! Unfortunately I am unable to comment on the outside temperature as I currently have covid and won't be free until Friday. One kid out of isolation and back to school tomorrow, the other on Monday.

InMySpareTime · 18/01/2022 15:19

Under the Snow Shield™️, hoping for a breach this year! Even when the rest of the country (and even the rest of Manchester) gets a decent covering we get barely a flake.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 18/01/2022 15:26

I'm a Scouser and I say it's a "bin lid"...! Haven't lived there for years though; everyone says bun/barm roundabouts.

Where I am it's barm but we also have Bin lids which are really big barms.

So greasy spoons will normally offer a barm, large barm or bin lid.

Freshprincess · 18/01/2022 15:40

Hello. I’m the west part of the NW. sunny and freezing here.

To add to the bread roll debate, it’s a barm round here. A bin lid is a giant barmcake. When I was a lass, working in Liverpool city centre I’d stumble into work with a massive hangover and wolf down a bacon bin lid to recover.

YouHaveMail · 18/01/2022 16:14

I live very close to North Yorkshire (lancs side) probably easy to guess where I am 😁

Was about to mention bin lids! Barms where I am (Manchester), but used to work near Warrington and there was a cafe with a good line in bin lids.
iklboo · 18/01/2022 16:25

Yes 'bin lids' are the giant barms. A favourite with manual workers round here to put a full English on.

A muffin is a cake. Unless it's an English muffin. Which will never be a barm, no matter how it aspires.

And let's not forget oven bottoms.

Figmentofimagination · 18/01/2022 16:33

🙋🏻‍♀️ checking in. Very west here. Cold, dry and sunny today. Wrapped up warm for both school runs.
I also live near the beach, but I hardly ever get time to go.
And it's always bacon barm. Never heard of a bacon bin lid.

Itsmeandhim · 18/01/2022 16:37

I live near the Cheshire/Wales border.
We call it a batch.
Me and DH took our granddog down to the town's marina.
There are lots of Swans, Geese, Ducks and any other water fowl that
wants to join the gangs. Last count made by the ranger we had over 80 swans.
Weather was frosty this morning but it's been brighter this afternoon.

@Yebbie

Wondered why someone started a thread about Kim Kardashians daughter...

I'll leave now Grin

Me too. Some say she was born to keep Kim Kardashian humble.
thismeansnothing · 18/01/2022 16:40

Hi north westerners. I found my people's. It's been absolutely stunning here today, sunny and chilly. Me and dh are off this week so madre the most of it with a trip to a bit of the seaside we have in this corner of the land to play some crazy golf and a chippy dinner. So much fun

ProfYaffle · 18/01/2022 16:45

I'm from Warrington but not lived there for 20 years now. Was always a barmcake in my day.

thismeansnothing · 18/01/2022 17:08

And as for the bread debate it's an odd one. If I'm at a butty shop I'd say a barm, but if I was buying a pack of them at the supermarket it's buns.

Bin lids are mega size barms you get at greasy spoon vans, usually filled with a full english 😂

Then there's oven bottoms (I don't like those yuk, but DH thinks they are the best)

Livpool · 18/01/2022 18:09

I'd definitely say a bin lid is just a massive barm - I used to get own every Friday at lunchtime

Stath · 18/01/2022 18:21

Anyone fancy some black peas? Got a bag of dried ones that I saved from November Smile
Plenty of vinegar available!

As long as you serve them me in a styrafoam cup with lots and lots of vinegar !
changedforschoolpost · 18/01/2022 18:58

I love parched peas with mint sauce. Tried making them the Preston tram way but they failed. Reckon they knew I was an ex Southerner...

I used to live over there, but am deeper into Cheshire now.

Always been batch, not barms. Grin

DinkBoo · 18/01/2022 20:30

Can I swap all these barms for a butter pie and parched peas?

Freezing here, under a blanket, looking forward to going to (teddy fleece covered) bed as soon as is reasonably acceptable.

Ifailed · 18/01/2022 20:39

Liverpool is geographically in the Midlands.
