North west thread

YouHaveMail · 17/01/2022 23:22

Noting there is a thread for the east side, I thought a north west thread was needed.

--Also I am very bored at the moment waiting for dc to fall asleep, and this felt like the perfect way to spend the time.

Any other NW mumsnetters here? Let's talk schools, food, leisure....and so on Grin

@ProfYaffle

I'm from Warrington but not lived there for 20 years now. Was always a barmcake in my day.
Snap! It's definitely a barm cake in our house. My lovely MIL once asked me if I wanted a 'filled roll' and I had to ask her what it was. 😂

Morning lovely North Westeners! Decidedly grey and dull this morning. Just the way I like it!

TheOnlyMrsW · 23/01/2022 09:08

Nearest Booths unfortunately is a drive away in Barnoldswick, in the good old days I worked near the one at Media City but it's closed and our office has moved!
@PaperMonster it's the East Lancs one that I'm near (although I have very fond memories of the Embassy one when DD was small).
And it's definitely a funnel Smile

TheOnlyMrsW · 23/01/2022 09:08

*ginnel flipping auto correct!

Two Booths near me, one a couple of miles away and the other about six miles away. Spoilt for choice 😀

anonymouslyusing · 23/01/2022 10:01

Hi NW people!

Its barm and entry here in my part of Liverpool. No Booths near me though

eleanorwish · 23/01/2022 10:53

I come from what used to be South East Lancashire, now Tameside.
I now live in East Anglia. This thread is really making me miss a proper oven bottom muffin. And potato cakes. The supermarket ones are nowhere near as good as the ones you could get from Greggs.
They were ginnels where I grew up.

MouseyMoose · 23/01/2022 10:55

It's an Alley where I am, nearest booths is a 10 minute walk away, the next nearest a 10 minute drive.

Tillymintpolo · 23/01/2022 11:01

There’s a nice Booths in Chorley

iklboo · 23/01/2022 11:07

I miss the Booths on Media City. We used to get charcuterie, nice bread & cheeses like we were dead posh! The nearest one is in Altrincham now, likewise Waitrose.

I posted this on another thread:

Me an rkid we're in the ginnel, waggin it, but it was bobbins so we went to the croft cos there was a bonny. Rkid went flying, scrawped his knees & started skriking. I twatted him for being mard and it all kicked off proper.

MRSAHILL · 23/01/2022 11:29

@Tillymintpolo yes and with the Marks and Spencer food shop just across from Booths in Chorley, it's not a bad little shopping area now.

PaperMonster · 23/01/2022 15:06

@TheOnlyMrsW Booths is Barrowford (which is where I’d planned to be today!) not Barnoldswick (which is where I was yesterday!!) So I guess we must be in a different direction along the border to yourself.

YouHaveMail · 23/01/2022 15:30

Hi @Widowin 👋
Didn't want to read and run, hope this thread is helpful with all us NWers around

@PaperMonster that's my closest Booths too I don't live in Barrowford and Barnoldswick is where I go to see the dentist 😂

@TheOnlyMrsW I think we are somewhere nearby, but my geography is awful so I can't figure it out 😂😂

I call it alley, but I'm from SW..I thought alley was the universal term 😳

iklboo · 23/01/2022 15:55

@Widowin - welcome! I'm 52 and peri / edging into menopause. I had the night sweats, hot flushes, woolly brain, mood swings (burst into tears because I couldn't find the butter knife) and, weirdly, very hot feet! I've started oestrogen only HRT as I've got the coil and, touch wood, it's been really good.

Dobbyatemysocks · 23/01/2022 15:58

Hi everyone,
Hope it's ok to join in.
Born down south. Homeless for 2 years. Ended up in Liverpool after traveling around by train. Met some wonderful people who helped me get back on my feet. Lived here for 15 years. Also live in nowsley (add a k at beginning - not that it's needed) Love the area I now call home.
Just wish I could find a bakery that makes Lardy Cake.

Dobbyatemysocks · 23/01/2022 16:09

Forgot to mention I'm also peri and brain fog is really affecting me - I'm normally so organised - had to ring DSis for my mobile number the other day - whilst on it! Tried changing the handset using the laptop mouse. Thrown a whole bag of sugar over the floor. Tried to Hoover with the mop. Used a bathroom sponge to dust.

PaperMonster · 23/01/2022 16:21

So @YouHaveMail you can’t be too far away. I’m often in Barlick. But my dentist is in Skipton! But that’s purely because OH used to live in Skipton and we transferred to that dentist. But I visit Barlick for hair and beauty treatments and if we’re free of Covid we’re going to the fire and ice thing next weekend.

I’m 52 and assume I’m peri but I really don’t know!

PunishmentSnart · 23/01/2022 16:47

What the hell is Booths?

PunishmentSnart · 23/01/2022 16:49

@NoWordForFluffy didn’t end up
with a chippy Sad

Too early for lunch- too late for tea!!

Do you ever come further afield for good proper English fish & chips?

NoWordForFluffy · 23/01/2022 16:54

Aghhh, disappointing!

We wouldn't go anywhere specifically for fish and chips; would definitely have them as part of a day out though (as long as the timings worked! Grin )

PaperMonster · 23/01/2022 17:00

@PunishmentSnart it’s an upmarket supermarket!

PaperMonster · 23/01/2022 17:00

@PunishmentSnart I think I’d quite like to work in Booths 🤣🤣

TheOnlyMrsW · 23/01/2022 17:05

Yep Barrowford not Barnoldswick as I found earlier when DD was playing football at N&C College - been here over 30 years and still get the two mixed up Grin
@PunishmentSnart www.booths.co.uk/, tis lovely and I'd love to work there, DH's friend works for them and says they're really good and the staff discount is fab!

ErrolTheDragon · 23/01/2022 17:05

I call it alley, but I'm from SW..I thought alley was the universal term

Given the Gracie Fields song 'Sally ... pride of our alley', surely no one in the NW should fail to understand it. But it doesn't work so well the other way round. My parents (one Lancs, one Yorks, I'm a mongrelGrin) unaccountably raised me in Essex. Hmm When on holiday with a school friend and her family in Cheshire, they were completely stumped by being given directions including a ginnel; fortunately I was able to translate.

Diditopknot · 23/01/2022 17:58

It’s both a ginnel and a back alley here on the fylde coast.

Don’t get me started on “Close to me”locations from Blackpool to Fleetwood to God knows where! Bizarre.

Chippy tea last night, chips, peas and gravy obviously. And yes, a barm cake too. Bloody lovely.

Booths is a bit posh but there is one I believe. I don’t know anyone who frequents there though.
Paying such prices would make me mardy as well as skint.

We never get settled snow here, never. Too much salt int thair my granny says.
Love to see snow.

YouHaveMail · 23/01/2022 18:01

@ErrolTheDragon 😂 SIL first mentioned ginnel and I had no idea what she was talking about (she was stumped by the fact I didn't know what she meant 😬)
