North west thread

YouHaveMail · 17/01/2022 23:22

Noting there is a thread for the east side, I thought a north west thread was needed.

--Also I am very bored at the moment waiting for dc to fall asleep, and this felt like the perfect way to spend the time.

Any other NW mumsnetters here? Let's talk schools, food, leisure....and so on Grin

I don't know the clubs that you're talking about as I came to Bolton later on in life , my clubbing days were spent in Manchester in places like Rotters , jillys rock club , placemates 7 , pips , hacienda and in stretford there was Sands over the arndale center
My other half though remembers most of the Bolton clubs , he tells me about them often , he was a door man at Ritzys when it belonged to Rank .

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 29/01/2022 09:39

I remember The Vulcan - the floor was very sticky! I always felt a bit scared going in there. I practically lived in the pub nearby, whose name escapes me - doubles for a pound. I should have just handed my student loan straight to the landlord.

BradleyCooperwillbemine · 29/01/2022 09:42

Just remembered - it was The Jubilee.

Used to go roller skating at Bolton Nevada

@Redcrayons

I don’t know any of these names though Heaven and Hell rings and bell. Where was that?

Any takers for Mr Smiths?

Mr Smiths used to have a monthly rock night. My sister met her husband there! I, on the other hand, got barred for trying to punch the cloakroom woman. I was 17 at the time Blush

I live between blackburn and Bolton just realised I don't know where my nearest booths is

This a great thread! DH and I are both NWers but completely different. I am from the posh leafy part Grin and he is from the complete opposite Grin. The main differences are mostly food related (although he says "ginnel" I say "side return" potato potarto)

Our major differences are actually food related. He thinks hot milk is acceptable on any kind of cereal Shock I think it's only acceptable for porridge or ready brek. He also wrongly calls ketchup "red sauce" and has either that or brown sauce with pretty much every meal (on a memorable occasion I cooked salmon and he covered it with brown sauce - I think everyone will agree that is wrong Grin I still don't understand the nuances of barms/baps etc, I just say rolls. He also eats fried spam with a fried eggConfused.

Despite all this we are extremely happy and have fond shared memories of DeVilles/The Ritz/42nd Street/5th Avenue/all nighters at Rockworld etc. Snakebite and black for one pound on a Monday night at The Ritz!

It's a very weird feeling picking my DCs up from 42s these days when they are wearing my flares and velvet hats and platform shoes!

WhenTheStreetsAreColdAndLonely · 29/01/2022 15:21

Our local Booths is full of wankers though and one of my DDs injured her finger in the fresh orange press once. So we don't go (but I still love the Booths Christmas book) Grin

@MaybeHeIsMyCat , I'd love to know more about the blundell , I drive past it at least twice a week and always wonder what it would be like to live there 😁

iklboo · 29/01/2022 17:46

Yep. Fried spam is lovely on a barm with red sauce 😄

It's gorgeously old, lots of hidden things in it and very woo if you're into that. Some of the walls are made with wattle and daub, and it used to be a courthouse. They would try people there and also hang them, the kitchen I believe was built on the old mortuary
There is also believed to be an underground passage to one of the houses across the road, possibly because of the priest hole that is there too

The cellar did have writing with drinks prices, that was written by my gran when she worked there, 3 generations of my family have worked/lived there

PaperMonster · 29/01/2022 18:19

@BradleyCooperwillbemine oh yes, the Jubilee. I recall being in there one birthday sitting on a stool and drinking something I hadn’t drunk before, standing up and just slithering to the floor.

Used to go into the Vulcan most days when I was at college. Instead of class half the time!

iklboo · 29/01/2022 19:15

@MaybeHeIsMyCat - yes! The passage to the toilets look like it was the servants quarters.

FANTINE2 · 29/01/2022 19:42

The Cabin, Lpool anyone?

Starbonnet123 · 29/01/2022 19:43

It's a beautiful building , a place I'd love to live in , I bet it was great living there @MaybeHeIsMyCat

insancerre · 30/01/2022 10:16

The M6 giraffe has blown away
Can any northwesterners keep an eye out for him

Tillymintpolo · 30/01/2022 10:28

I was driving up to Lancaster and noticed he’d gone !

StopStartStop · 30/01/2022 11:34

I love this thread. The town with R, a few posts back, is Rochdale. I recognise the clubs from Manchester.

iklboo · 30/01/2022 14:25

I went to Fab Cafe & The Brickhouse - more indie stuff - later on but started my clubbing days at places like Club Tropicana, Corbieres, 21 Piccadilly, 42nd Street etc. Went to The Hancienda a couple of times too.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/01/2022 14:39

Oooh a North West thread.

Bread. The great divide.

Tea cakes
Muffins

But no one has mentioned bunnies.

iklboo · 30/01/2022 14:43

But no one has mentioned bunnies.

I take it you don't mean rabbits? 😄

JayAlfredPrufrock · 30/01/2022 14:49

True

The Jubilee? Not as sticky and dodgy as the Vulcan but still a student fave. Had a pool table.
heartonthetyne · 30/01/2022 15:18

@PaperMonster

I wonder if anyone remembers The Vulcan in Blackburn??? Or am I just old?!
Yep. I used to drink Newcastle Brown ale. I have no idea why that was a thing Confused
heartonthetyne · 30/01/2022 15:22

@TheVolturi

Does anyone enjoy a dab or John Bull from the chippy?
I still wax lyrical about how lovely dabs are and I haven't lived in E Lancs for over 30yrs. My mum used to love a John Bull. I don't think I've ever seen an equivalent anywhere else.
