North west thread

409 replies

YouHaveMail · 17/01/2022 23:22

Noting there is a thread for the east side, I thought a north west thread was needed.

--Also I am very bored at the moment waiting for dc to fall asleep, and this felt like the perfect way to spend the time.

Any other NW mumsnetters here? Let's talk schools, food, leisure....and so on Grin

👋🏻

Hortuslover · 28/01/2022 07:20

I’ve frequented heaven and hell a few times, good times.

Cheeseboardandcrackers · 28/01/2022 07:51

@Cookie79

I’ll throw in locations from my misspent youth:

Xanadu’s
Bojangles
Route (Chester Moonshines upstairs)
And The Carlton (escalators in a nightclub - inspired!)

Begins with Rrrrrrrr 😜.

They need to do something with Drake St, it’s a bloody eyesore…..

@Tillymintpolo

Was heaven and hell in Blackpool?
@Tillymintpolo heaven and hell was in Blackpool. Closed before I went out but my husband used to go clubbing there.

Also, Flares, Waterfront (that then became Sanuk, and I think it's changed twice since), Residence, Walkabout and so many others that constantly change its hard to keep up.

organicoatmilk · 28/01/2022 09:24

I thought this was about the Kardashians!Grin

HoppyHop · 28/01/2022 13:00
@HoppyHop- we do!
@Imissmoominmama Grin I use to live there...and miss it. Happy times.

Saucery · 28/01/2022 15:06

I was more of a Raiders/Warehouse girl. Less of a meat market than Tokes/Arabella’s.

YouHaveMail · 28/01/2022 16:07

@Hortuslover I think we are very close Smile there are a few others who are from this neck of the woods on this thread Grin

Tillymintpolo · 28/01/2022 16:58

@PieonaBarm was the closing night a New Year’s Eve about 98/99 ? If so I was there too !

Redcrayons · 28/01/2022 17:52

I don’t know any of these names though Heaven and Hell rings and bell. Where was that?

Any takers for Mr Smiths?

GuyFawkesDay · 28/01/2022 17:55

Heaven and Hell was in Blackpool.

First snogged DH in there 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Tillymintpolo - I'd rather meet up in The Blundell Arms ☺️
That made my eyes leak a bit (the pub is strongly related to my family) will PM if anyone wants more info but that was my home for a long time

JuergenSchwarzwald · 28/01/2022 18:00

@elp30

My husband has been reading this thread and he's been rather amused.

He's from Leigh (between Bolton and Wigan) and he's never heard of a "ginnel" because he calls the area between houses as an "alley" and eats "barms" and "baps" and has never encountered a "bin lid" but is sad that he hasn't.

He may need to have his North West credentials revoked.

My dad was from Leigh.
JuergenSchwarzwald · 28/01/2022 18:05

@Tillymintpolo

Hot vimto ❤️
And sarsaparilla logs (sweets) bought from Bolton market. I wonder if you can still get them?
Saucery · 28/01/2022 18:18

The Galleon, anyone?

Christmas1988 · 28/01/2022 18:24

Hello from the North-west,
@iklboo it’s a barm in Lancashire too

PaperMonster · 28/01/2022 19:25

I wonder if anyone remembers The Vulcan in Blackburn??? Or am I just old?!

Hortuslover · 28/01/2022 19:46

@YouHaveMail 👋🏻 A little town beginning with B?
I’m surprised by how many are from round here Grin

PieonaBarm · 28/01/2022 20:35

Yep @Tillymintpolo that was the one!

cocobean26 · 28/01/2022 20:44

We used to have our sixth form nights out to Palm Court in Southport. Loved that place. Plus many many nights out in the Loose Moose in Ormskirk, it’s the back of Morrisons now.

RedRoseLass · 28/01/2022 20:48

Preston girl here

It’s a ginnel for me
Barmcake and butties, always brown sauce.
Parched peas 🤢 only tried them once as a kid, couldn’t try them again. Love the spuds from the spud man on the flag market though.
Butter pies also a 🤢 for me, give me a meat and potato pie any day.
Miss the old market, I’m not knocking the new one but I have very fond memories of buying outfits, bags and even makeup when I was younger. Also loved the small independent shops like mix & match (which I had a Saturday job in) & Bobbies.
Loved exchanging books on the market bookstalls.
Booths is overpriced and pretentious.
Tea cakes definitely have fruit in them.
Chippy tea every Friday night growing up. Chippys had those giant pickled eggs and onions. O and pineapple fritters. But nothing beats a meat & potato pies with chips and curry sauce yummmmmm
Playing down the loney as kids and swimming in a not so clean river ribble. The miley tunnel was a go to place for kids too but I never went.
Going to Christmas parties at the working men’s clubs as kids.
Riding donkeys on blackpool beach, Blackpool illuminations and school holidays visiting the pleasure beach in the days you could just buy tickets for the rides you wanted to go on.
Morecambe and Southport fun houses, I can’t remember which one but one had a giant slide I was terrified to go on.
Camelot theme park
My parents never made corn beef hash ( not British) but I had a bf who introduced it to me, sooo good with pickled cabbage and HP.

I use to love staggering out of Tokyo Joes in the 90s and grabbing a chip barmcake on my way home, sometimes cutting through the ginnels to get home.

dipdye · 28/01/2022 23:53

Meancatdaddies anyone? SmackwaterJack's??

Agadorsparticus · 29/01/2022 07:17

Y to Heaven and Hell, it was a great idea for a nightclub, pop music in Heaven and full on Dance in Hell.

Had some good times in Mr Smith's too, particularly Tuesday student nights. Wednesday college was very tough 😁
