Am I the only one who doesn't like dogs?!

BlueStripedTowel · 17/01/2022 17:27

Now don't get me wrong, some dogs can be cute to look at but I really don't like being near dogs. I've got nothing against dogs but I just don't like having them near me or touching me. It seems like if you say this to a dog owner though they look at me like I'm the devil!

When I was a toddler about 30 years ago my grans dog tried to attack me (first grandchild - dog was jealous of attention I was getting from gran) so the dog had to be put down, I don't really have memory of this but wonder if it's rooted somewhere in my brain!

I just hate it if I'm out anywhere and someone's dog jumps up on me and owners say "don't worry he/she is really friendly" and I say please can you pull them away because I don't like dogs and some owners get really annoyed as if they can't understand why some people may be uncomfortable.

Any similar experiences?

@BlueStripedTowel sounds like your gran was a bad dog owner.

NannaMcPhoo · 17/01/2022 18:55

I do not like nor dislike dogs so I can tolerate them if they are not heading straight for me.

What I do hate is when people force their dog on others. Yes I get that you love your dog but we do not please listen when we say we do not want to stroke it.

Huntswomanonthemove · 17/01/2022 18:57

@RedCandyApple

That should be don’t bother me* It’s not like you go to the park and cats jump up and you and meow, they keep to themselves and at least make an attempt to bury their shit dog shit all over the street is just vile
Dogs that jump up? it's the people who own them who are to blame.

If you don't have a problem with cat shit in your garden, you are lucky. It's a big problem around here and no it's not buried.

I am not a dog fan at all. DH neither. I really really don't like it when their owners allow them to run up to me or jump at me.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 17/01/2022 18:58

I really dislike dogs too.

The smell, the loose fur bits everywhere, the dribble, the barking, the mess, the jumping up and all that business with poo bags. I don't want your dog sniffing me, rubbing up and down my trousers or coat.

Why do people let their dogs mess in the middle of the pavement, what's wrong with the gutter?

Fallstar · 17/01/2022 18:59

I'm not comfortable around dogs although I'm generally reassured when I see that the owner is in control and the dog has good recall, doesn't jump up etc.

I was flattened by a dog as a toddler and try as I might, I tense up when an off-lead dog takes an interest in me!

Having said that, I feel strongly about animal welfare and would always advocate for canine wellbeing. I just don't want to get too close to them.

Ashleighz88 · 17/01/2022 19:00

Everyone comparing cats and dogs need to start comparing animals to humans. I don't remember dogs ruining the planet, causing global warming letting off ridiculous amounts of co2 emissions .Many Adults litter or fly tip, at least dog/cat sh*t decomposes naturally over time. By your standards shall we call humans disgusting too? I hate people that don't like animals, the planet is going to pot because of heartless people like you.

badkitty · 17/01/2022 19:00

No, I dislike them. Don't mind the occasional well behaved golden retriever or similar but overall not a fan at all. It's got really bad over the last couple of years as there are now far far too many around as well with owners who don't have a clue. So many breeds are utterly hideous as well, the mind boggles as to why anyone would want one. Then there's the poo issue. Plus, they kill people. I have a lot of friends who are dog obsessed as well and I have to say the constant dog conversations can be pretty tedious. Cats are so infinitely superior!!

wanttomarryamillionaire · 17/01/2022 19:01

I love dogs and own 3, however I would never allow my dogs to jump up at people while out walking. In my own house it's different, its the dogs home if you don't like them don't come round.

Spottybutterfly · 17/01/2022 19:01

As a kid I was terrified of them. As I've got older I've got better, but I get scared if they jump on me or keep barking at me.

The amount of people who can't control their dogs in public is too many.

Ashleighz88 · 17/01/2022 19:06

@badkitty there are far too many humans actually. I think that needs curbing before anything, but god forbid that is suggested. All your complaints also apply to humans. Google how many people are killed by humans each year, then google the same but by dogs. You'll see it's not even comparable!

Ashleighz88 · 17/01/2022 19:08

Also I hate how cats and dogs are constantly compared, they are a different animal! It's like comparing a dog to a Tiger or a Bear!

Ha ha some humans are ok but I love all dogs
Patapouf · 17/01/2022 19:13

I'm with you, I think most dogs are disgusting and I don't want them touching me, my stuff or my kids.

I respect that other people wish to treat them as if they were human family members and I find it strange that I'm probably the weird one for thinking that's it's gross to have an animal living inside your house Grin

Everdreamer1990 · 17/01/2022 19:19

Might get flamed for this.

I was always dog mad. I have 2 dogs myself & they were very much my life. I had DD 2 years ago & a light switch went over night & they now drive me mad.

I hate the smell. I hate the hair. I hate cleaning up the back garden. I hate that we can't go out for the whole day etc. Everything they do makes my skin crawl.

They never came on holiday with us so when we go away you have to factor in an extra cost of a holiday. Their food is so expensive & vet bills.

I told my DP that we won't have any more dogs when something happens to them. They're still loved & taken care of but I actually don't enjoy them like I used to.

And since having DD it's not just my own dogs but all dogs. I just don't want to be around them, barely find them cute/funny etc anymore. This would shock so many people who know me as I literally went to college to study dogs, specifically the science around their behaviour & genetics & I was always a huge lover of showing & Crufts.

It's so weird how having kids can change you.

I can’t imagine not liking dogs.
Very strange.

Roadhouse111 · 17/01/2022 19:21

Dogs are wonderful, I got my first dog in the summer and have never looked back.
I was cat lady, my children and I were petrified of dogs, genuine fear. We decided the only way to cure it was to get one, she is the light of our lives and brings so much joy, I genuinely cannot wait to come home and be greeted by her, her loyalty and devotion blows me away every single day.
I love cats but they cannot compare.

Don't knock it til you try it Wink

Justkeeppedaling · 17/01/2022 19:24

I absolutely hate dogs. The poo, the smell, the hair, the slobber.

No matter how many times you tell me "he's just being friendly" - get it the hell away from me! Angry

I think this ^^ is the crux of the problem. The small minority of dog owners who can't imagine how anyone could dislike dogs, and insist on bringing them everywhere with them, even to visit people who don't want dogs in their houses.

It is usually the same type of owners whose dogs jump up, slobber everywhere and generally don't do as they are told.

And I don't dislike dogs. I like well behaved dogs.

EmmaH2022 · 17/01/2022 19:35

I'm fine with dogs but the number in London is astonishing now
I used to live in a pet free building and they changed the rules

Teeny flats and dogs aren't great.

I have been approached by a few friendly dogs wanting to play or be petted. It's fine for me but some people are scared and I wonder how they feel. We were in a pub and a huge dog headed straight for the one person in the group who was scared. I managed to distract him. The owner didn't care at all that quite a big dog was just pottering about.
