Am I the only one who doesn't like dogs?!

BlueStripedTowel · 17/01/2022 17:27

Now don't get me wrong, some dogs can be cute to look at but I really don't like being near dogs. I've got nothing against dogs but I just don't like having them near me or touching me. It seems like if you say this to a dog owner though they look at me like I'm the devil!

When I was a toddler about 30 years ago my grans dog tried to attack me (first grandchild - dog was jealous of attention I was getting from gran) so the dog had to be put down, I don't really have memory of this but wonder if it's rooted somewhere in my brain!

I just hate it if I'm out anywhere and someone's dog jumps up on me and owners say "don't worry he/she is really friendly" and I say please can you pull them away because I don't like dogs and some owners get really annoyed as if they can't understand why some people may be uncomfortable.

Any similar experiences?

I like well behaved dogs🐶🐕 not the very badly behaved dogs who's owners let them bark/jump up at you! I have had dogs all my life.. Big dogs and small dogs and have trained them well. My dogs are well trained and come back well when I recall them. I bloody hate untrained dogs and their bloody stupid owners!

Blueberrymuffin03 · 20/11/2022 15:02

I don't hate dogs what I do dislike is people that treat dogs like humans... Clothes birthday parties ect. I do however not like rottweilers, dobermans they are terrifying not keen on fluffy ones either I fail to see the appeal.

Spli · 10/02/2023 21:49

Nothing good about dogs. I have a real dislike of these noisey, smelly bags of wind, piss, poop and fleas. They are vermin, and I do not think any house with a dog in residence is clean. I love all God's creatures, and dogs are not God's creation, but a mutant creature created by man from wolves 15,000 years ago. If you must have a household pet, get a cat.

OP, u are not alone, I don't like dogs either but I don't like dog people even more.

timetogetlost · 10/02/2023 22:45

I am not an animal person. I don't want any of them in my house or touching me. I'm not unkind and I don't eat meat, I'm.just a bit funny about cleanliness, and I have no desire to be near animals. I love people though. I have pets because my husband and children wanted them, and I thought it would be unfair to deny them all the chance to find out if they like animals. But I'd rather not have them. I definitely don't like other people's dogs.

flabbygoldfish · 10/02/2023 23:07

I am not particularly keen on dogs but they can be intelligent, amazing creatures. Guide, sheep, police/drug dogs, ones that are trained and have a job are fine.

it is the overindulged, fur babies that are untrained & suffer from emotional incontinence which piss me off. Not to mention the dog shit & little plastic bags everywhere.

What is a dog person? Do they walk on 4 legs?

Weirdo.

What annoys me is that some dog owners don’t abide by the ‘rules’. We live near the sea and there are notices everywhere stating where dogs can be exercised. It’s blatantly ignored by some though and dogs galloping along the beach may be having a great time, but they aren’t in control in those situations. If it says your dog should be on a lead, your dog should be on a lead.

We have fields and walks nearby and the number of dogs has risen exponentially in the last three years. I’m not convinced all those people who got dogs would have done so if it were not for lockdown. There are dog bins, but there are still messes on the paths and fields and the local FB pages are full of complaints about the mess and dogs being off lead.

I like dogs fine but the entitled, unaware, selfish, oblivious owners need a kick up the arse. I was jumped on by 4 different dogs on my walk this morning. Each one the owner gives a feeble performance of being in control with a ‘stop that Fido’ in a pathetic voice but doesn’t put the dog on a lead or grab it away from me. Then I get the sour looks for shouting ‘no’ or ‘down’ at their precious mutt.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 10/03/2023 17:06

You are definitely not the only one OP but saying you don't like dogs isn't acceptable in "polite society".

Dogs are here to stay, they go everywhere, their owners' needs come first and everyone else (even other owners with eg nervous dogs) can put up or shut up.

Mimilamore · 10/03/2023 17:22

Too demanding and hate the smell they leave, like the thought of walking but would never have one as I couldn't be responsible for such a needy animal. Best dogs to my mind are working dogs doing what they need to do. Worst are energetic dogs kept in inappropriate accommodation ... not the fault of the dog. Live in an area that gets blighted by dog shit do I can see why people like them but don't feel the need to have one myself....

Mimilamore · 10/03/2023 17:24

Then there is the slobber... yuck, just couldn't have that swinging about everywhere 🤮

bozzabollix · 10/03/2023 17:26

You’re on Mumsnet, there’s bloody thousands of you on here. Thankfully not local to me though which is very dog friendly, I’m wondering if this is a more urban attitude.

Bovril2000 · 10/03/2023 17:28

I agree OP. The smell of them is vile, I can only assume dog owners have poor sense of smell!

Boobles1983 · 27/11/2023 15:03

I totally understand. I would never harm any animal, I am an animal lover, but dogs annoy the hell out of me. I like them but in very small doses. They're too much. Too excitable, always wanting to be in your face, always staring at you. The sloppy noises they make. The fact that they are NEVER full. They stink, they pant like they're dying. The mess they make. You leave the house for 5 minutes and they think you're never coming back so they empty the bin and destroy the place. I hate the sound of barking too. Thank god i dont live next door to someone who owns a dog who barks all the time, i would go insane. Oh and having to pick up their crap...no thanks! I hate to be that person who doesn't like dogs because if you admit it to anyone who has them you get looked at like you're evil. I remember a few years ago some random persons dog jumped up at me and put mud all over my jacket so I was like "ffs!" and his response was like it was my fault. If I threw one of my cats in his face I'm sure he wouldn't like it. I did have a dog a few years ago. As soon as my back was turned he would chew up tv remotes, game console controllers, my phone, etc, costing me a bomb. And they always know they've done something bad cos they do "that face" while doing "that thing with their tail". Lol if you know, you know. I was at my mates house and their dog wouldn't leave me alone and I made it very clear it was annoying me but they did sod all about it. Ugh...dog owners!

Yeah because for some reason they are treated as superior to every other animal and expected to be treated as humans.

Sunflowergirl1 · 28/11/2023 09:15

And when minding my own business walking along, having them off a lead, jumping up and muddying my clothes with owners so arrogant that they think it is fine and just fun. Now seems extending to cafes where I book lunch and the blighters are sat there and come over and want stroking and licking my clothes. Disgusting.

Ariela · 28/11/2023 09:29

We have a dog, and I don't really like some other peoples dogs. The ones that jump on you and leave muddy paw prints on your clean best coat, the ones that come over 'oh he's only being friendly', the ones that come into the already crowded café then bark and bark because they cannot get to another dog in there, the ones that ignore their owners/have not been trained, even my friend's one that's allowed to jump on the sofa, and indeed clearly spends all working day on the sofa shedding hairs that stick to my clothes.
I quite like our dog because she isn't allowed to do all that.

It's actually the OWNERS of dogs I don't like for allowing all the behaviours that impact other people.
Same feelings about kids in restaurants that are allowed to run around / shriek /bother other people etc, it's the owners/Parents.

Iamnotamermaid · 28/11/2023 09:44

nope I stay in a rural area and dislike dogs, especially the ones which have zero recall (been friendly). And farmers (not urban) really hate them when their livestock is ripped to shreds & killed (costing them thousands) by out of control domestic dogs.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/11/2023 10:11

The only one on MN?? You’ve got to be joking! There are so many anti-dog threads on here!

underneaththeash · 28/11/2023 10:28

I'm not keen on dogs and we have one!

It's very well trained and he is quite cute, but I'd rather not have a dog and think they can be dangerous.

Cats are much nicer.

ReadtheReviews · 28/11/2023 10:53

I see them as having so much potential to love and be gentle and kind when we haven't fucked them up through breeding or maltreatment. They don't lie, they aren't unkind, they are forgiving and would lay down their life for you if you have that bond. As for physicaly disgusting, I am much more grossed out seeing a very fat person in a onesie or a very old person eating soup or someone else's toddler with green snot or a man's hairy butt crack tbh.
Could never be friends with a person who hated dogs or any animal as it seems so odd to deny we are animals too and no less germy or gross.
