Am I the only one who doesn't like dogs?!

Now don't get me wrong, some dogs can be cute to look at but I really don't like being near dogs. I've got nothing against dogs but I just don't like having them near me or touching me. It seems like if you say this to a dog owner though they look at me like I'm the devil!

When I was a toddler about 30 years ago my grans dog tried to attack me (first grandchild - dog was jealous of attention I was getting from gran) so the dog had to be put down, I don't really have memory of this but wonder if it's rooted somewhere in my brain!

I just hate it if I'm out anywhere and someone's dog jumps up on me and owners say "don't worry he/she is really friendly" and I say please can you pull them away because I don't like dogs and some owners get really annoyed as if they can't understand why some people may be uncomfortable.

Any similar experiences?

“It's actually the OWNERS of dogs I don't like for allowing all the behaviours that impact other people. “

This!!!!^^

Dogs are nicer and more loyal than humans.

But at least other humans don't jump up, dump mud on you and lick you (well generally not anyway)

Exactly.

I hadn't realised this was such an old thread. Still very relevant though!

Im so happy to read I am not crazy and the only one sho doesn't want dogs. I am kinda repulsed by them too. I like certain dogs and they are usually specific dogs I meet that are either super friendly and clean. The owner definitely pay attention to them. But generally the same thing I notice, dog poop on my walks and piss by entryways to my apartment. I find it absolutely sickening and some people don't understand. I feel they need a place specifically away from people who live in these public places to do their business and not where people walk, it's so gross!! I find it so weird my apt has a large fenced in area for dogs but no kid park! Dogs are treated so special over people and it creeps me out. I can smell them in my clubhouse that I pay 40 dollars a month to use but don't want to hangout at events because it smells like dog and vegetables. A real bad smell in my opinion. It's so weird to have a person bring their dog to a restaurant and sit by other people's table. Some people grew up on farms and I see this to be strange. I prefer cats and there is so much cat hate, it angers me. People could pass up.a cat alone hungry outside with no problem but not a dog. I don't hate dogs I just feel they are not humans and should be treated as such. I don't like the smell of dogs at all and public areas shouldn't be for dogs and dog owners should respect people who do not enjoy dogs like they do and understand people might like the dog but not love and want to kiss and hug all over it and bring it to dinner. I hope society changes, kids deserve parks at apts too. Cats are dissed so much but I can't take my cat to dinner.

Katloves · 04/03/2025 15:05

Im the same. They make me queasy sometimes. The cats have boxes now that are robots and spin ny themselves and completely hide the cat smell.

Katloves · 04/03/2025 15:06

No they are not! I don't like dogs much either honestly and I'm tired of pretending.

Katloves · 04/03/2025 15:15

That's totally different. I think the dog assistance are usually amazing dogs that I have seen and well behaved. 😀 that's rare though to see out and about but I do see them periodically and they don't gross me out as much for some reason.

Katloves · 04/03/2025 15:20

Its okay for people to not like dogs. The topic is about people not loving, kissing all over, and bringing dogs to dinner. Its not dog hate. People can not like dogs and be really good loving people.

Katloves · 04/03/2025 15:29

I’m with you OP…just met up with a friend yesterday and she brought her dog…which is her choice but now I’m needing to wash my jeans as the dam thing did nothing but just at me and sniff and lick my leg. Just horrible and she thinks it is lovely and tells me how much her dog likes me!!

On the other hand, we should be very grateful to dogs, for so many reasons:

Guide/assistance dogs - dogs can warn their owners of sudden severe illness, for example people who have fits
Police dogs
Army dogs
Dogs that sniff out bombs at venues we attend and on aeroplanes
Dogs that find drugs
Dogs that visit care homes
Therapy dogs
Search and rescue dogs

I'm sure there are more.

Totally agree with this.

Personally I have never had the desire to own a dog although I do understand why many people love them. The idea of being licked by a dog or picking up poo every day for years is not something I'd relish. There again I'm allergic to dog dander so that's another reason to avoid them.
