Am I the only one who doesn't like dogs?!

Now don't get me wrong, some dogs can be cute to look at but I really don't like being near dogs. I've got nothing against dogs but I just don't like having them near me or touching me. It seems like if you say this to a dog owner though they look at me like I'm the devil!

When I was a toddler about 30 years ago my grans dog tried to attack me (first grandchild - dog was jealous of attention I was getting from gran) so the dog had to be put down, I don't really have memory of this but wonder if it's rooted somewhere in my brain!

I just hate it if I'm out anywhere and someone's dog jumps up on me and owners say "don't worry he/she is really friendly" and I say please can you pull them away because I don't like dogs and some owners get really annoyed as if they can't understand why some people may be uncomfortable.

Any similar experiences?

Totally with you on this. I hate when I'm in someone's house and their dog comes over and demands attention. My.friends now know to keep them away from me

Standby though for people piling on saying they'd never trust/like someone who doesn't like dogs 🙄

IncompleteSenten · 17/01/2022 17:32

I don't dislike dogs but I do dislike those behaviours.
I dislike the humans who should have taught the dogs to not jump up. 😁

EishetChayil · 17/01/2022 17:33

They're desperate, slobbery creatures. At least cats have dignity.

I dislike dogs, not scared I just find them faintly repulsive and don’t want to be close to them. The way some people are with frogs. Not a huge animal fan at all really.

sadpapercourtesan · 17/01/2022 17:38

I actually do like dogs, on an individual basis, but I would still breathe a sigh of relief if they were suddenly banned as pets. I live in an area which has been pretty much ruined by dog shit. There are local walks - in beauty spots - which I have completely stopped going to because there is so much shit lying around it makes me feel ill. The streets around my children's school are appalling - I once counted twelve separate turds on a 20 minute school run. Humans as a class (I know every MN dog owner ALWAYS picks up, blah blah) have failed at keeping dogs as pets without making the daily living environment of other people disgusting, and rendering parts of it off limits to anyone who doesn't enjoy open-air faeces. So dogs can do one, lovely as they generally are.

GlitterSquid · 17/01/2022 17:39

I'm the same. If I'm honest, they make me a bit nauseous.
I'm a kind person and would never see one suffering but I really have a visceral reaction to being in their company. The smells, the bodily fluids, the hair. UGH. 🤢

lumpofcomfort · 17/01/2022 17:40

I like some individual dogs, depending on their behaviour and personality, but there are just too many dogs everywhere now. I dislike dogs, or more specifically their owners, who are allowed to run off the leash in parks and other public places, approaching whoever they like. Also the dog mess everywhere and the number of dogs allowed in cafes etc, which I think is unhygienic.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/01/2022 17:41

I don't dislike them but I'd never have one and I cringe when people call them their "fur babies".

Soubriquet · 17/01/2022 17:41

I really like dogs (got two of my own) and will usually happily say hello to most dogs in the street too.

But some are just so unpredictable that it makes me nervous sometimes walking by them

bobsholi · 17/01/2022 17:42

I'm not a fan. They're so needy and slobbery and stinky. I can never understand why people go so gooey over dogs and wonder what is wrong with me because I just find them annoying!

MarieG10 · 17/01/2022 17:43

We used to have a dog when I was a child but frankly I just despise them now. As pp said, I hate the fact I can't even go walking along country paths without getting shoes covered in dog mess and having them off a lead jumping up at me when I just want a peaceful walk.

I think when so,e people get a dog they just get it in their brain that all people want a dog with mucky laws and slathering nose jumping up

What really fu----ed me off last week was going in a nice local bar for a drink. Sat my the fire and a couple with a big dog come and sit next to us with said dog constantly pawing and rubbing nose on my jeans. Usual shite of "he's only being friendly"

I’m the same with people Grin
vavavoom123 · 17/01/2022 17:46

I actually have a dog, always have had dogs and I know what you mean. I don't like unfamiliar dogs coming near me

Joystir59 · 17/01/2022 17:47

Yes, you are in a minority of one Grin

Joolsin · 17/01/2022 17:50

Me as well. I've only really liked one dog, my grandad's wolfhound, and he was more like a docile donkey than a dog. The rest, no - smelly, licky, hairy, jumpy things and the whole poo/poo bag thing gives me the heaves. I also dislike the whole anthropomorphism of dogs that people do, calling the dog their children's sibling, etc. And how people get really offended if you say you don't like dogs, whilst often themselves saying they hate cats. Hypocrisy!!

P.S. Cats are the best!! 🐈

Appalonia · 17/01/2022 17:52

I completely understand OP. When I was about 6 my aunt's collie dog bit me ( this was the seventies so nothing happened to the dog, in fact it was me who was told off for it ), and I've always been a bit nervous of dogs ever since. I'd never have one personally and much prefer cats. They can't kill you !

Skeumorph · 17/01/2022 17:52

Haha no you are definitely not in a minority of one!

I like dogs, I like all animals.

I don't like how the majority of people keep dogs as pets and the last 5 years or so has seen this feeling skyrocket. Shit, noise, badly trained animals everywhere, lots I feel pretty flipping sorry for as they're kept by people with no idea how to meet their needs properly. So now, I'd happily see much much stricter controls on dog keeping.

AuntieMarys · 17/01/2022 17:52

Not a fan. I appreciate a working retriever or sheepdog but have no time for yappy little fuckers, inbred snuffly ones or those kept as fashion accessories. Like a pp said, a cat has dignity. 😀

Huntswomanonthemove · 17/01/2022 17:53

I wonder sometimes if people who don't like dogs change their minds if they need an assistance dog. If you became blind, would you give a guide dog a go?

AutumnAlmanack · 17/01/2022 17:53

I was scared stiff of dogs when I was a child as I had been bitten twice (both times totally my fault for teasing the animal). It took a very long time for me to be comfortable around dogs, but I now have the most gorgeous, kind, softie dog who I love to bits. I am now interested in dogs in general, but agree I don't like strange ones coming up to me much. I hate cats - nasty, sly, selfish creatures!

inaninstant · 17/01/2022 17:53

Nope, I don't like them either.

I don't wish them harm and of course would never hurt one either (unless it went for me or my children) but I would honestly be quite happy if they didn't exist.

They just bring anything to the party for me. Not scared of them, I just find them smelly, irritating, slobbery and generally gross!

Tsuni · 17/01/2022 17:56

There will be some weirdos along in a minute to tell you you’re a psycho for disliking dogs. Always the same people that proudly tell you they hate people and especially children 🤔

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/01/2022 17:58

Are you new here?

There's a dog hatred thread every ten minutes.

YogaLite · 17/01/2022 18:00

I am not a fan of dogs, a dog once jumped up my toddler ds barking with bared teeth, thankfully it was on lead and owner immediately pulled him away but the fear stayed with both of us.

@Huntswomanonthemove, since u mentioned guide dogs, maybe u can tell me something I have always wanted to know but didn't have anyone to ask:

Guide dogs - all fine and dandy but who takes them out for toilet/clears the litter tray for someone who is disabled?

BurnedToast · 17/01/2022 18:00

I have a dog but don't let him jump up at people and keep him away from others if I can see they don't want him near them. I always shorten his lead when are close to small children even though he's a softy. I think as long as you're a considerate owner then it's fine.
