Am I the only one who doesn't like dogs?!

BlueStripedTowel · 17/01/2022 17:27

Now don't get me wrong, some dogs can be cute to look at but I really don't like being near dogs. I've got nothing against dogs but I just don't like having them near me or touching me. It seems like if you say this to a dog owner though they look at me like I'm the devil!

When I was a toddler about 30 years ago my grans dog tried to attack me (first grandchild - dog was jealous of attention I was getting from gran) so the dog had to be put down, I don't really have memory of this but wonder if it's rooted somewhere in my brain!

I just hate it if I'm out anywhere and someone's dog jumps up on me and owners say "don't worry he/she is really friendly" and I say please can you pull them away because I don't like dogs and some owners get really annoyed as if they can't understand why some people may be uncomfortable.

Any similar experiences?

What is the point of this thread, apart from being goady?
A place for people who dislike dogs to find their people. The title makes it quite clear. Those who like dogs can simply not join in, the same way I don’t bother clicking on the horsey threads, or ones about the royals, or cheese.

It's asking a question. So obviously people who do like dogs are going to join.

If the title was, 'don't join in if you're a fan of dogs' then you'd have a point.

stuntbubbles · 17/01/2022 22:12

@AllThingsServeTheBeam Fair enough! Then it’s a discussion thread. My point was more “how is it goady? It’s the internet, a place where we’re allowed to discuss things”

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about this subject:

This thread just spurs me on to allow my dog full freedom everywhere we go. If you don't like dogs that's your problem to deal with and get out of the way. In the same way I might not like kids or humans but unfortunately it's their planet too.

RedCandyApple · 17/01/2022 22:20

Well thank god loads of places don’t allow them 😂

Pretty much everywhere in the Lakes tbh

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 17/01/2022 22:23

I absolutely love dogs but I understand not everyone does, I’m not one of them ‘ oh my dog is soo friendly and I’ll just let them jump at you ‘ dog owners. My dog doesn’t jump at people, she does get excited but I hold her unless someone approaches her then I know they are okay with dogs. My dog is probably like my best friend but I’m not one of those people that take thier dog shopping, making others uncomfortable and it’s not fair to the dog either.
Tbh I don’t really like cats, and when I say that I get some weird looks. Everyone is entitled to thier own opinion.

dalrympy · 17/01/2022 22:25

Agree. Not a fan at all.

Make me uneasy and feel a bit icky.

Ashleighz88 · 17/01/2022 22:35

Genuine question- all you people saying you don't like dogs and they are disgusting etc, how do you feel reading abuse stories in the media etc? Does it bother you or do you think "I don't really care as I don't like dogs"

Disliking something is not the same as wanting to see it hurt/abused
aslug · 17/01/2022 22:42

Totally agree, smelly and slobbery - ugh. Add to that the constant yapping from neighbouring flats, dog shit everywhere and gormless owners that think you should find it adorable when their badly-trained inbred goggle-eyed furbaybeeez jump up to bite you and put mud on your clothes.

You don't get any of that nonsense with a guinea pig!

bluechinavase · 17/01/2022 22:51

Why can’t some dog owners just not accept that they are probably the reason this thread exists? People have different likes and dislikes but for some reason admitting to disliking dogs these days is like some cardinal sin. I do actually like dogs as long as they don’t dominate the interaction I’m having with the human owner. A friendly pat and sniff is fine but I don’t want the entire conversation dominated about what their furbaby’s latest antics are. Nor do I want jumped on or slobbered over. If you are that sort of owner who thinks everyone has to be as invested in your dog as you then you’re the problem and give decent dog owners a bad name. How would it go down if I took my mucky shoes off and rubbed them on your clothes then licked you and slobbered on you? Acceptable? No it isn’t so why let your dog do it.

I dislike dogs and am not an animal person. I find stories of animal abuse distressing though. I don't wish them harm. I just don't want to be around them and I feel that they don't bring anything to my life.
BlimeyGuvnor · 17/01/2022 22:59

I do like dogs....from afar! But they are massive space invaders and that freaks me out. Many a time I have been treated like a leper for expressing a disliking at being leapt and dribbled on without my consent. Many (not all) owners fail to respect that not every one wants their animal all up in their face. I do think they are awesome though, as long as they aren't in my immediate space!

I do realise it's down to dick head owners. My dog comes to places like pubs with us. He goes off lead. But he's trained. He doesn't stray, he has impeccable recall. He hasn't got any interest in other people or animals. People who allow their dogs to bark excessively in their own garden or when out and about. Or let them jump up people or bother other dogs and wildlife are knobs and their dogs shouldn't be off the lead.

Well said. I don't expect everyone to like the same things as I do, so dog owners can't expect people to love dogs as much as they do.

the same way I don’t bother clicking on the horsey threads, or ones about the royals, or cheese.

How dare you dislike cheese @stuntbubbles Grin

Ohyesiam · 17/01/2022 23:06

@EishetChayil

They're desperate, slobbery creatures. At least cats have dignity.
^ this! They need so much managing and sorting out. Cats just live their lives with sovereignty😁

Actually I love to see dogs out and about, they take joy in it. A dog on a beach is a truly gorgeous thing. It’s only in the domestic realm that I’m not keen.
But I think it’s down to what sort of companions you like, I like mine affectionate but independent, in the same way that I loved it when my children got to about 7 and could have really interesting conversations, but managed their bodily functions by themselves!

I agree. I don’t want my dogs near these humans. Keep away from us
JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/01/2022 23:28

I don't like dogs. I'm not scared or nervous of them I just find them really irritating. Barking, slobbering, jumping up. Ugh. Can't stand them.

Nomicron · 17/01/2022 23:29

I love dogs, especially my dog. I can just about understand that some people don’t like dogs, even my dog Wink so I do my level best to keep her well behaved and not to annoy other people.

Cats on the other hand give me the heebie jeebies-I don’t like seeing their bum or the way they leap around silently so I never know if one is going to land on me. And their claws are terrifying!

Hehe. Cats are silent 🥷 ninjas!

Their claws don't hurt in same way as dogs claws do, as thinner and friendly cats don't scratch unless suddenly scared whilst on you.

I read my cats mostly.

I think there are cat people and dog people and a lesser number subset who like both. And then the No pet people and the ones that like snakes Shock
Interesting to read the different views though!

FireMeetGasoline · 18/01/2022 01:37

No, you aren't the only person to not like dogs, but in my experience and observations, I'd say you are probably in the minority.
