Eating our 10-a-day thread (2)

Breathmiller · 28/12/2021 22:51

Hi all

This is our second thread about upping our veg and fruit intake on a daily basis.

We tend to list what we've had to keep us accoubtable and generally chat about how to increase the rainbow on our plate.

We don't always make 10 but anything more than you would normally is great. I like to at least get 5. 10 or even sometimes more is a great day.

All welcome whatever reasons.

Tiny achievement (I have an undiagnosed ED)
Was a bit peckish and could have easily fallen into a load of bread
Instead I had Greek yoghurt with cinnamon and a banana and it was delicious!

ThisTownAintBigEnoughForBoth · 19/01/2022 18:37

Breathmiller Wow, I was very interested to read about your revelation. Pleased for you that you have found this insight and are trying a new pattern that's working for you.

ChocolateButtons sleep deprivation is hell isn't it! I had crazy bf-ing non sleepers for years and it certainly did affect me and my ability to make rational choices about food. I do think extra protein might help, it really wards against blood sugar crashes IME. Also if you can make sure that you are getting the good stuff in your diet ( in terms of enough vitamins and minerals etc) then maybe just let go of the worry about the buttons of shame and enjoy them?

Twentin I had an avocado for lunch and wondered how you were getting on? Sometimes you just can't make yourself like certain foods though... I loathe porridge, olives and dates myself, all mentioned on this thread. Like you, I'd like to enjoy them for health reasons but nope, not happening.

MaybeHeIs Yum, now I want yogurt with cinnamon and banana. Sounds really comforting and nourishing too.

Yesterday went well for me. Breakfast had orange, grapes and apple with it (1), lunch was a big bowl of soup made with broccoli, spinach, cauli, carrot and chickpeas.(3) It was really satisfying with the spinach and made it such a pretty colour. Kids liked it too so a big win. I had another smoothie with banana and protein powder to stave off the empty feeling I always get about 4 pm. (1) Dinner was roasted tofu with carrots, peas, sprouts and corn. (3). Bedtime snack was mango (1). I think that's 9.

2 small bowl lentil & veg soup
3 tangerine, kiwi slices

Breathmiller · 19/01/2022 22:22

Thanks ThisTown it's going well so far.

Working late tonight but I nearly got them all in. Had a light day of eating so things like half a banana and only 1 date. Which is fine as I don't like being over full at work.

  3. Butternut squash soup
  4. Carrots

I hope everyone is having a good veg-filled day.
Reporting for yesterday:
Apple, grapes and mango for breakfast (1)
Avocado, tofu, tomatoes and a ready made wheatberry and kale salad I got from Sainsburys, for lunch (2)
A banana in a milk and protein powder smoothie (1)
Steamed veg including carrots, cabbage and broccoli (3) for dinner, with a vegan cashew macaroni ready meal from M & S. It was so gorgeous, the sauce was creamy and delicious, not exactly like a cheese sauce but hit the same spots. There were quite a few mushrooms in it as well (but not enough for a portion).
An apple and a tangerine for a snack (1.5)

8.5 total. I think I need to add some raw veg for snacks to hit 10.

Wildernesstips · 20/01/2022 17:29

Also reporting for yesterday:
1 - 3: Stir fry veg

  1. Apple
  2. Tomato pasta sauce and a handful of spinach

3 Carrot
4 fava beans, swede
5 brown onion
6 mushroom, tiny tangerine-not together😂
Will aim to up the greens today.

I have lost a bit of focus and have gone back to the automatic toast snacks. The trick is for me to have some tasty, cooked veg in the fridge for at home days.

  2. Pear
  3. Avocado

ThisTownAintBigEnoughForBoth · 21/01/2022 15:48

Twentin oh that's fantastic! "Okay" sounds like real progress.

Breathmiller hooray for dh, what a star!

PartyOn snacking is a challenge, isn't it. I try to have raw veg available but it's not always filling enough.

Yesterday wasn't bad:
Apple, melon and grapes with breakfast (1)
Banana and peanut butter on rice cakes (1)
A casserole with carrots, leeks, parsnips, butterbeans, and I also had some broccoli and cauli on the side (4 portions)
Glass of orange juice (1)
and a tangerine (0.5)

7.5 I think.

Great to hear how everyone is doing.

Quiet day on the veg and fruit front for me, a manic non stop day with work. I had a ready meal for dinner, one of these Wicked plant based meals for dinner, but to be honest I'm not sure how much of a portion of veg is actually in it! So i haven't counted it. Long day again tomorrow so we'll see how I get on. I am really enjoying my juices on working mornings. They give enough energy without bloating and feeling over full.

Anyway...today's offerings...

  1. Apple, pineapple, spinach, carrot, ginger juice.
  2. Avocado
  3. Tomatoes
  4. Dates
  5. Spinach
