Is there a thread anywhere regarding the ghislaine maxwell trial? I've searched and can't find one anywhere

Many thanks for that excellent link, artquejtion. I've been reading bits and pieces here and there, but hadn't seen it set out so well anywhere else

[quote artquejtion]This is a pretty good synopsis of the trial so far, with a few things I had never heard before, including other older women being involved.

"Jane testified that the sexual abuse first took place when she was alone with Epstein, and later graduated to involve Ms Maxwell, and later on other, older women."

that's a really good synopsis of the trial so far, thank you for sharing.

Do we know why Virginia Roberts isn't testifying? As Epsteins most prominent accuser I was surprised not to see her there. Is she bound by a previous NDA?

orangepeelsz · 14/12/2021 18:08

Aparantly Virginia was asked and she said "she was never asked to testify" Confused

Do you think the compensation the victims have received, will have a negative impact on their credibility ?

Apparently, the agreement between JE and VG is going to be made public, as part of Prince A civil court case. The judge said there was no reason to keep it secret,, other than disclosing the amount of compensation involved.

It is all so incredibly murky, but I have a feeling PA will get off with this one.

Thank you for explaining how compensation works here @FlowerFlour, not well it seems. You deserve all the specialised support you need without becoming a pauper.

A bit more in the compensation program Angry

This trial just gets more and more bizarre, after the prosecution was shorter than expected it is expected the defence will be finished early next week despite them originally announcing they had 35 intended witnesses. They were planning to have it wrapped up today but of the witnesses who are going to take the stand one is from England and can't make it until Monday, another is going to plead the 5th? Not sure how that works when they are a defendant witness?

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 17/12/2021 16:44

Just seen they are planning to wrap it up in the next 3 hours with no witnesses to stand but not sure how reliable that is.

artquejtion · 17/12/2021 19:33

I wouldn't rule out a retrial at this stage, it's becoming a bit of a farce, the judge seems to be rushing it, and if the reports from the trial are accurate, almost seems to be biased against the defence.

Hopefully it will be a retrial rather than an acquittal.

DuncinToffee · 17/12/2021 22:11

That was predicted from the beginning

“Maxwell will not testify in her own defense during her sex-trafficking trial, averting what legal experts describe as a risky move in her quest to beat criminal charges that could put in her prison effectively for the rest of her life.”

Not being able to produce witnesses is very unprofessional. The defense also wanted anonymity which was denied by the judge.

Roussette · 18/12/2021 06:44

This sums up the Defence which was not exactly robust.

Summing up is on Monday, and a decision possibly before Christmas.

CathyorClaire · 18/12/2021 20:39

It's all so utterly odd. First the prosecution seems to have been abridged and now the multi million dollar defence team wrap in a blink and you miss it moment.

I don't understand why the witness from England can't be heard on what boils down to the next court business day.

I had hoped GM would be convicted, sent down and never heard from again but I can see this clusterfuck heading for retrial Angry

Roussette · 20/12/2021 14:14

The trial is proceeding...

twitter.com/KlasfeldReports/status/1472926910774710274

Closing arguments have started.

AUSA Moe's opening lines:

"Ghislaine Maxwell was dangerous. She was a grown women who preyed on vulnerable kids" [...]

"She targeted a girl whose father had just died. She targeted a girl whose mother was an alcoholic."

Calling Maxwell a "sophisticated" predator, Moe tells jurors: "She caused deep and lasting harm to young girls. It is time to hold her accountable."

"The proof is in. It's clear. It's consistant and it points to only one conclusion: Maxwell is guilty."

Roussette · 20/12/2021 19:27

"Epstein liked underage girls. He liked to touch underage girls. Maxwell knew it."

"Make no mistake:" Maxwell was "crucial" to the whole scene.

She says that Maxwell made Epstein's otherwise "creepy" behavior seem "legitimate" to victims and "silence" the "alarm bells."

"Maxwell was the key to the whole operation."

"They were close. They were partners. They were rarely apart."

CathyorClaire · 20/12/2021 20:01

Jury due to start deliberating. DM reporting it's likely they'll reach a verdict by Friday so as not to leave it hanging over Christmas:

Can't find any other sources backing this to link to so feel free not to click.

Roussette · 20/12/2021 22:52

Thank you Duncin

Motherdare · 21/12/2021 00:26

I’m not at all sure they’ll return a guilty verdict. The prosecution just doesn’t seem to have presented enough evidence. Wise move not to testify, i wonder if they’ll deliberate for long? Prosecution will be hoping for a speedy verdict. For the defence the longer the better as it suggests doubts.

Motherdare · 21/12/2021 02:09

In fact, to my reading of it, the prosecution has been so ineffectual as to make one suspicious their hearts are in it at all…
