Is there a thread anywhere regarding the ghislaine maxwell trial? I've searched and can't find one anywhere

I've followed everyday and I just don't think it sounds like the prosecution have done a decent job at all!?

Basically it's all on the witness's statements and I didn't hear any other corroborating evidence or anything compelling to link in with what they were saying.

Just feel like it's a total farce and she's going to walk free

I'm concerned the prosecution has wrapped after just two weeks of a projected six week trial.

I'm sniffing a plea deal but then I have been all along.

Anyone else see the DM pity party for poor unemployed Andrew spending hours every day slumped in front of a TV while sporting a defiantly mottoed regimental badge on his twice weekly horse riding jollies?

Straw in the wind?

ChequerBoard · 11/12/2021 21:05

@Roussette

Ghislaine was a 'facilitator'.

That's a good word

Absolutely a facilitator but I think a procurer also.

I agree with this & actually, given all the prosecution have presented, this would actually be the right outcome sadly. I don't mean I agree but as juries are only mean to use the facts as presented to them (rather than everything we know in reality), I'd struggle to see how she'd get any kind of meaningful sentence from this. Wholly unfair.
Roussette · 11/12/2021 21:14

Oh, we feel so sorry for Andrew. Not.

Porcupineintherough · 11/12/2021 21:15

Definitely a procuress, assuming the term is not solely applied to those that procure prostitutes.

I didn't mean to invoke the idea of prostitutes, I meant that she acted as a procurer of vulnerable young girls.

HopefulHetty · 11/12/2021 22:32

Definitely a weirdo.

HopefulHetty · 11/12/2021 22:41

And unlike Rachel Johnson I don't feel a "batsqueak of pity" for Maxwell.
The testimony has been horrible.

Well being a Johnson feeling a 'batsqueak' of anything is quite an achievement. I once saw Rachel and Johnson S on a 'celebrity' Pointless show. He totally blanked her she stood there looking up at him like a mouse in a cat's jaw. Told me everything I'd ever want to know about the family. Just like Prince Andrew flying to New York to take a walk in the park - speaks volumes. I think Epstein committed suicide by proxy - had someone kill him for money because his ego would not accpt another trial. That is probably the hardest part for Maxwell, abandonded by another abusive man.

That's quite an interesting theory. I have always though it wasn't suicide not least because I don't think his ego could allow him to do it himself, but perhaps that is a workaround for rich narcissistic psychopaths caught in a tight spot?

The whole thing really is grim. As always with these types of things, you can't help but wonder how it all started.

Roussette · 12/12/2021 08:26

That is an interesting theory, and medically (something to do with his neck/throat) there is the possibility he did not commit suicide.

LadyEloise1 · 12/12/2021 08:30

She may well walk.
But she will be shunned by decent people.

What about the other famous names associated with Epstein and his private jet/ island ?

Roussette · 12/12/2021 08:36

I think she'll end up with something like a 2 year sentence, then taking nto account her time in prison, she'll be out in a few months.

I would like to think she will be shunned by decent people but reading her family's website set up in her name when she was arrested, I'm not so sure. As far as they're concerned, she is 100% innocent and very hard done by.

VikingOnTheFridge · 12/12/2021 08:58

I never understood why so many people dismissed the idea of JE having killed himself. I'm not saying that did happen, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he were offed because he knew too much. But also it would also hardly be the first time some powerful arsehole chose death over facing the music, would it?

Porcupineintherough · 12/12/2021 10:19

@VikingOnTheFridge quite.

Let's take bets.

I'll go for 23 years.

Good point!
collybubble · 12/12/2021 14:50

The suspicion around his death derives from the fact he was under supervision: every 30 mins a guard had to check on him and yet on the night of his death, nobody checked on him at all l. Also his cellmate had been removed. The guards who were supposed to keep watch fell asleep the cctv outside his cell failed to record anything

Could all be coincidental though

I wouldn't use the term coincidence, rather something that isn't particularly shocking in an ineptly run, for profit prison system that historically doesn't give too many fucks about whether inmates live or die. People are often so surprised about incompetence, but dysfunctional systems and institutions don't become undysfunctional because someone important rocks up.

None of which is to say he wasn't killed, of course, or deliberately allowed to kill himself. But the level of trust some people put in the competence of US prison staff is quite optimistic.

collybubble · 14/12/2021 07:22

@VikingOnTheFridge

I see. So that wouldn't be unusual thing to happen in a NY jail

Well really these are the sort of questions people who are determined it couldn't possibly have been suicide need to be answering. How often do prisons fail to provide the required number of guard checks, is CCTV usually working and of sufficient quality to discern what's happening (it's surprisingly often unusable in the real world, I dunno about prisons) what number of prisoners successfully commit suicide within the US penal system when the answer to that question ought to be zero. These are all things I'd want more information about before ruling out the possibility that a cowardly predator topped himself instead of facing the music in a system that doesn't give a shit.

artquejtion · 14/12/2021 10:40

This is a pretty good synopsis of the trial so far, with a few things I had never heard before, including other older women being involved.

"Jane testified that the sexual abuse first took place when she was alone with Epstein, and later graduated to involve Ms Maxwell, and later on other, older women."
