Around here it's the cross breeds like cockapoos or cavachons or else cocker spaniels that the mc/uc own.. Maybe it's just our part of London?

i live in a v posh place (not posh myself) and it's strictly gun dogs and jack russells for the gentry. the scruffier and smellier the better

Red setters and wolfhounds, also enormous things like Newfoundlands

mpsw · 30/11/2021 10:03

There's a long standing joke that officers are issued with a black Labrador when they pass out from Sandhurst,

I'd say that the breeds are those to which the adjectives large, working or gun can be applied. Also anything on the vulnerable native breeds list (and they would breed them to do their bit to keep the lines going)

Occasionally if really posh they'll have little frou-frou dogs (possible loads of them) because one of their ancestors first brought that breed to Britain

Londonlassie12 · 30/11/2021 10:04

Not many huge dogs like Newfoundlands in my area although one of our very mc neighbours has a very barky but gorgeous Samyeod (sp)

We have a Longdog, a Whippet and a Pug.

The Longdog is middle class, the Pug is working class but the Whippet is exceedingly posh and we are all his servants.

A Longdog is a mix of two Sighthounds, my one is a Whippet X Greyhound, often wrongly thought of as being Lurcher. A Lurcher is a sighthound crossed with a different breed type or types.

HeidiHaus · 30/11/2021 10:11

Surely an Afghan hound is the poshest of posh dogs?

ComtesseDeSpair · 30/11/2021 10:13

There is a devastatingly posh lady who I see (and have occasionally spoken to)sometimes when I’m running in the park of the much nicer neighbouring neighbourhood to mine, walking two impeccably groomed and silky Afghan Hounds. Her hairstyle and the way she carries herself matches theirs.

LadyCatStark · 30/11/2021 10:15

@mpsw uh oh, we have a black Labrador and DS hopes to become an Army officer 😂.

Greyhounds are definitely posh these days and they must have been ex-racers and rescued, which is weird because when I was a child, greyhounds were the opposite of posh!

Santaischeckinglists · 30/11/2021 10:20

Oo this is mine with a haughty look!! .
Ideas above her station imo!!

We have Papillons which are the same breed Marie Antoinette had - that makes them pretty posh I think.

Hmm, good game. So I am SW1 (a stone's through from Buckingham Palace!) so I guess it might be classed as posh. Sooooo many dogs here (no corgis though!). Trying to think of wot the neighbours have - little dogs, pekingese, quite a few Iggys actually. Opposite there are Shelties. Oh also a Samyoed (sp?).

We have a Whippet so obvs are dead posh.

What is fascinating is that lots of these little dogs aren't on leads. I don't understand it. They are usually sniffing along the pavement following some gorgeous Russian girl with a posh handbag who looks like an Instagram influencer. I admire their dog training ways tbh, coz my Whippet is not so compliant. How do they do it?

Surely a bichon friese is far posher than a cocker spaniel!

My cocker is usually knee deep in mud and brambles.

SoupDragon · 30/11/2021 10:44

Or rolling in long dead squirrel.... that was a joyous day.

Santaischeckinglists · 30/11/2021 10:46

Surely anything with the word cock in is common??
Grin

Juanbablo · 30/11/2021 10:46

Whippets, Labs, Retrievers and Spaniels are the kind of dogs posh people own. Lots do say JRT but we are NOT posh and we own one so I wouldn't include them in the list of posh dogs.

Medievalist · 30/11/2021 10:47

@Santaischeckinglists - oh my! Did she pop her tiara off for the photo? She's simply stunning and clearly you should be very grateful to be employed by her. ❤️

I’ve seen people on here say that doodle mixes are chavvy. It’s usually agreed that black labradors are mc.

I’ve got both a doodle mix and a black lab, so who knows what I am!

the scruffier and smellier the better
Both of mine are scruffy, smelly, ditch diving, shit rolling beasts. The doodle usually has twigs stuck in her fur and the lab has usually got something unidentifiable on his fur. They don’t scream posh, I think they’re possibly bordering on feral Grin
