Posh dog breeds (just for fun!)

Around here it's the cross breeds like cockapoos or cavachons or else cocker spaniels that the mc/uc own.. Maybe it's just our part of London?

I used to work in a central London vets.

We have a working cocker but have sullied our middle classness by also owning a staffie

A staffie is absolutely permissable in a UC/MC household provided it came from Battersea or The Dogs Trust. You must of course inform everyone of this.

The solidly MC and UC clients generally had gundogs (labs or spaniels - usually with names like "Grouse"), whippets or other working breeds (a few Dalmatians, Newfies, Wolfhounds and an absolutely glorious Leonberger). If they had graduated to full pack status, throw in a few terriers and some odd-looking Greek rescues that may or may not have been dogs Grin

The blue shar pei - not posh, although very handsome!

Blue was nouveau rich circa 2010-ish.
Today its dilute, lavenders, & idiots breeding double-dapple dachshunds with all the health problems they risk, sadly.
See also frenchies, pugs, doodles etc (I did meet one v posh frenchie but he was ancient a decade ago so bred prior to their rise in popularity!).

Of the pedigree posh dogs in our area the majority are mini schnauzers or daschunds! Would love to see some giant breeds in the flesh but I guess the gardens in our road wouldn't be able to accommodate a newfie or St Bernard hence all the poo crosses!

A pair of English Setters live nearby, they are beautiful and presumably show dogs as they have been schooled to walk in a similar way to dressage horses. Watching them trot away in the park is quite a sight. I suspect they are posh.

Love english setters, they're very regal!

@Londonlassie12 if you’re talking about mine, he’s a Bedlington Terrier

My Cavalier King Charles takes her name too literally and thinks she's the Queen herself.

Londonlassie12 · 01/12/2021 13:00

@kenadams surprisingly we don't see too many cavaliers in my part of London which is surprising as they're the perfect size.. Plenty of cavalier crosses cavapoos & cavachons... I would imagine cavaliers are again more regional & more common rural areas? Love them, such a sweet breed.

Mine's a whippador - golden lab mum and black whippet dad

Londonlassie12 · 01/12/2021 13:16

@bengalcat sounds like a beautiful combination!

My Newfie girl is very pleased to discover she belongs to posh owners. She didn't know this till now.

Would love a newfie so much but I have had bichons growing up & have had bichons ever since... A giant breed would be a huge culture shock to us! Newfies are stunning

This pair of clowns think they are posh, particularly the Queen on the left 😂 most of the time, they are encrusted in mud and zooming around fields being consistently outsmarted by rabbits and wood pigeons. we also have a schnauzer who is too posh to even get his regal arse off the sofa for the photo…

Cavaliers are lovely but the health issues put a lot of people off, I think. There are real efforts being made to improve the breed by some breeders but between the heart issues and awful conditions like syringomyelia I think it did discourage people. I really hope they can successfully breed out those conditions.

Live abroad, so unsure whether we're posh or not, but I have a scruffy wire haired JRT and a JRT/Beagle who is an absolute loon.

Posh dogs around here tend to be massive (Great Danes, Mastiffs etc.) as it proves you have a large enough apartment to house them. That or KC reg handbag dogs that never touch the pavement or meet pleb dogs like mine Grin.

KenAdams · 01/12/2021 18:15

@AwkwardPaws27 yes, that coupled with how difficult it is to find a good breeder means you can wait for 2 years which puts a lot of people off.

OompaLumpaLabrador · 01/12/2021 18:52

DH is proper posh and just seems to know without thinking or being told what the PLU option is on any occasion. For the occasion of dog choosing, it had to be a working Labrador. Our Lab is very not posh, the result of fraternising by two dogs owned by a local gamekeeper, but he is magnificent.

I understand, as a fox red, he’s rather arriviste but he sheds like a goodun’ and his fur blends in with the sofas.

As a working Lab, he’s smart as a button and has done a spot of picking up on friends’ shoots, but I thought you’d most appreciate a photo of the working Labrador in its natural habitat Grin

Ours is just a little girl - she's only 45kg. Wink
noblegreenk · 01/12/2021 19:01

I think greyhounds. They are exceptionally regal and aloof...until they decide to have a moment of craziness!

littlejalapeno · 01/12/2021 19:17

So glad my darling Doberman hasn’t been mentioned as a posh dog… guess that makes me solidly working class? Grin

IamEarthymama · 01/12/2021 21:29

This is FitzChivalry Farseer, named after a bastard prince in Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings series of novels.

Officially Royal then! 😉🐕‍🦺? He is a Mongolian, cross between a Bedlington terrier and a poodle.

In reality, he’s a working class socialist in the Welsh Valleys, awaiting the Glorious Day and recalling the Chartist March from Nantyglo to Newport in which his ancestors accompanied the martyrs and piddled on the boots of the rich. DW and I are his willing courtiers, responding to his every whim. 😂

My vote is definitely for the Afghan as the most aristocratic dog; a chap nearby has two and they look so glorious as they parade along the riverside.

Thank you for the dog pictures, more please!

My gorgeous girl! She deffo thinks she’s posh, she thinks she is a princess and we are her slaves. In reality, she’s a gobby northerner like her mumma 😂

Round by us Vizslas seem to be the choice of the poshest of the posh.

There are thousands of 'poo' crosses in the village.

I have a Golden Retriever and a Cairn Terrier neither of whom are posh.
