Stolen the idea from
Another thread. I wanted a Mr Frosty, but never got one. Apparently my parents says I never asked at Christmas or birthdays. (I did have an A la cart kitchen though.)

I always wanted a mr frosty! I tried to convince DS that he wanted one but he never has.

He wants a jelly slush. No chance, what a mess making bit of nonsense it looks.

AliceMcK · 22/10/2021 12:52

Mr Frosty, Mr Fruity, the My Airline hostess toy, a get-a-long gang soft toy (although a did get a get-a-long gang camera) and finally a care bear. I’ve totally lived vicariously through my DDs and they have so many Care Bears to make up for it 😁. I don’t think I ever got anything I ever asked for, it’s probably why I make sure my DDs get everything they want on their Xmas lists if I can.

Oh, and I was another one who was only allowed Sindys, not Barbies.

If I recall correctly, it was something to do with Sindys being made by a British company and Barbies American?!
Found a site with copies of old argos catalogues if you want to remind yourself of all the toys you longed to play with: retromash.com/argos/
Wow, talk about bringing back the memories!

What surprises me actually is how expensive toys were back then.. Most things are pretty much the same price as they are today Shock

Silversun83 · 22/10/2021 13:11

This is what I coveted and never got... But at £40, maybe it's not surprising..

Etch a sketch. I always wanted one , never got one so had to play with my cousins. Same goes for Fuzzy Felts . I loved them 🥰

Sindy was made by Pedigree in the UK and much more wholesome than the US Barbie. Many parents took issue at he figure and Dynasty style life.

I had both, though my preference was Sindy there were a few Barbies that I really wanted and I remember how happy I was to get both Crystal Barbie and Crystal Ken for my birthday.

strugglingwithlife · 22/10/2021 14:59

I remember having Barbie and Sindy, but had more Sindy dolls then Barbie but I always preferred my my little pony's and Sylvanian families and didn't play much with Sindy and Barbie

I can trump you there! O was only allowed the very English Pippa and her pony.

I desperately wanted Omnibot, I was given Dingbot instead and this thread has reminded me of that so am now sending this link to my father and demanding redress.

I never got a sodding Mr Frosty either. Will ask for that for birthday

As a child I went to a fancy dress party dressed as a doll, someone asked me if I was dressed as Barbie, I replied, "no, I'm Sindy, Barbie has a big bum". Grin My family won't let me forget that.

Aww I loved my dingbot, it reminded me of Short Circuit. I ended up buying a second hand one from ebay a while back that now lives on my shelf.
YesitsBess · 22/10/2021 17:34

Yes I'm probably about to do that as well. I had to look him and his stupid cute face up to remember the name Smile

foxgoosefinch · 22/10/2021 20:02

I was desperate for:

Mr Morgan the electronic organ;
Teddy Ruxpin (though that creeped me out, too);
Peaches and Cream Barbie. My mum also only let us have Sindy, and only Ballerina Sindy because she at least had a job (my mum’s rationale Grin);
I wanted Octons, just because they looked intriguing. Bought some for DD and she thought they were boring, gah;
Operation, the board game! Half of righties adverts seemed to be the adverts for Operation, I swear.

It was a good time to be alive though! Grin

foxgoosefinch · 22/10/2021 20:03

*eighties adverts!

Silversun83 · 22/10/2021 20:32

What also strikes me looking at the Argos catalogues is how much less variety there was..

Probably why everyone had Mr Frosty on their lists Grin

strugglingwithlife · 22/10/2021 21:02

@"Silversun83" that made me laugh 😂

strugglingwithlife · 22/10/2021 21:03

Bold fail!

Lockdownbear · 22/10/2021 21:12

What also strikes me looking at the Argos catalogues is how much less variety there was.

That has crossed my mind too. There were far fewer options.
Fewer options would also have made it easier for kids to say what they wanted. So many choices, so many ranges of toys.

In the 80s Lego had about 5 ranges, Basic, Town, Space and Castle and Technic. Now they have tons of themes.

Appleseesaw · 22/10/2021 21:19

I also wanted a Mr Frosty and never got one. My mum still asks me what what I want for Christmas and I still make a point of putting Mr Frosty on the list.

HumphreysCorner · 23/10/2021 19:45

Lol 😂 I wanted a Girls World but got a Sheena Doll instead as DM found the head only freakish.

HumphreysCorner · 23/10/2021 19:48

Also got a Sindy Doll instead of Barbie. 😂

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 23/10/2021 20:20

I didn't have. Mr Frosty and I desperately wanted one. I did get the Family Tree House though and,one magical year, I got the Sindy House with the lift and circular staircase from my Nan and grandad. (I was an only child and spoilt!) When I was 12, I sold all my Sindy stuff including the house and made enough money to buy a double cassette ghetto blaster (Matsui from Curry's 😂😂😂)

Blueink · 24/10/2021 00:07

What was it about Mister Frosty? Every year we asked for one and lived in hope!!
Had Girls World, quite good, though left at a friends house and forgot about it, so maybe not that good.

Pickles89 · 25/10/2021 19:19

@HumphreysCorner I ALWAYS got Sindys instead of Barbies. My mum said Barbies were 'tacky' and I felt embarrassed and uncool when my friends came round to play. Now I'm a grown up (more or less!) I can see her point and think Sindy's were much nicer!! I wish I had them still.
