Stolen the idea from
Another thread. I wanted a Mr Frosty, but never got one. Apparently my parents says I never asked at Christmas or birthdays. (I did have an A la cart kitchen though.)

I never had a Mr Frosty either. Another thing I wanted and asked for every Christmas was a chemistry set. Apparently they're "not for girls" 🙄

Pencilandpaper · 21/10/2021 22:11

Another one who desperately wanted a Mr Frosty (I even, after a few years of asking, remember very helpfully putting the Argos item number for it on my letter to Father Christmas as he clearly hadn’t understood in previous years what I had been asking for!) - how did they actually make money from it and it become so popular seeing as our wise parents knew it was a load of shite?
I remember getting a Fun Fax though, and walking round the house with it thinking I was the absolute business. The clipping of the middle ring binder was so satisfying, and I loved all the inserts that came with it.
Much simpler times! Lovely thread to read.

Gardenerboo · 21/10/2021 22:20

I wanted a Mr Frosty sooo badly. It never happened. Also wanted a pound puppy, the one that had a litter of puppies velcroed inside. I would have loved that.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/10/2021 22:27

@Gardenerboo my sister had one of those. I had a little basket with about 3 puppies in it. Loved them!

I wanted a Mr Frosty AND an Etch a Sketch. I got neither! #stillbitter

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/10/2021 22:33

I wanted a Barbie and a Barbie house. I got Pippa dolls and a Blue Peter cardboard box room scene....

Toddlerteaplease · 21/10/2021 22:34

@katscamel I was told the exact same thing about roller boots. I had skates. But I really wanted the boots! Never got them either.

Fab idea for a thread and the title made me laugh.
Got:

  • Cadbury’s chocolate dispenser… loved that thing! Every year after I got a box of the mini chocs to go in it. Absolute waste of money but was one of my favourite things as a kid
  • Operation
  • Guess Who
  • Sindy pony and stables

Didn’t get:

  • Mr Frosty
  • Hungry Hippos
  • Care Bears
  • hush puppies
  • cabbage patch doll
KilledByWitches · 21/10/2021 22:55

I also always wanted a care bear but was about ten at the time. My friend was a year older and she got a grumpy bear. I was so jealous.
The result was when DD was born I had an excuse, and well.....

I will say we ont have them now. DD is very much grown up and I sold the entire collection (a very small portion of which is in this pic) for a fair sum of money. I got it out of my system though 😂

I didn't get one either Hmm
Not that I'm bitter.

There were a lot of toys that I wasn't allowed. Barbie, My Little Pony, those mini dairy milk dispenser machines, etch a sketch. Certainly not Poochie (I still remember the advert). I really wanted those Jem dolls that were cool for a while, and I remember one summer staying at my Granny's where every time we went into Woolworths I would stop and gaze at them there on the shelf. As I knew I'd never get one I often used to go into my own world that summer and pretend I was one of them. FML. I was about nine years old to be fair.

I was however allowed a Little Professor. I can't believe at the age of eight I spent all Christmas wetting my pants in excitement at the prospect of doing sums all day. FFS GrinConfused.

Lanique · 21/10/2021 23:01

Oh, I did have all the Care Bears. All the plastic ones anyway, and a couple of the cuddlies. I also had a lot of Sindy stuff including the horse and travel case.

Fandangoes · 21/10/2021 23:13

I also always wanted a mr frosty and never got one! I also never got a Spirograph that I lusted after!

My lovely DH bought me a mr frosty as an adult for Xmas about 3 years ago
It is shit

batmanladybird · 21/10/2021 23:21

I do think the fact that this list is all the same
Is just there were only about 5 adverts in the telly around Xmas in 1985 😂

foxgoosefinch · 21/10/2021 23:24

@Siriisatwat

Ha! Me too.

I finally bought myself one from argos a few years ago. It was SHIT.

My parents used to buy me presents and then not let me have them. I had to keep them in a box and “save” them because one day they might be worth something. So 80s things like when kids cameras first came out, all my friends had one on school trips - mine was in a box in the loft being “saved”. So many gifts like that.

My dad has dementia now and I am clearing out his house to move him near me. All those boxes of presents that would have given me such joy as a child? Worth fucking pennies on ebay, it’s not worth buying the tape to package them if they sold. All gone to the charity shop. It made me so sad.

Oh that is such a sad story! I’m so sorry @Siriisatwat 🙁

Same. Told my mum a couple of years ago and it seems my (blatantly obvious to me) hints were anything but. She had no idea!

Imagine my delight as a 42 year old on her birthday opening my present from my DP's only to discover one!

The bonus of getting one as an adult? Adding booze!

WitchyNameChange · 21/10/2021 23:30

I always wanted one, circled it in the catalogue for 3 or 4 years and even cut the picture out and stuck it on my letter to Santa so he knew exactly what it looked like. Still didn't get one.

When I was pregnant with my first baby, I excitedly thought I that when they were old enough I'd buy them one and fulfil that childhood dream. When she turned 3, I did just that. And lo, it was absolutely crap 😂

IckyPop · 21/10/2021 23:30

Didn't get a Mr Frosty. Or a soda stream. Or Bauer skates. 😡
I did get the Sindy house, caravan, Range Rover and Princess Di wedding dress though.
So shouldn't really complain Grin

wingingmywaythroughlife · 21/10/2021 23:32

Loving this, totally takes me back!

Another one who didn't get Mr Frosty and harbours a grudge! Also wasn't allowed Cabbage Patch dolls (too ugly, like PP's mum said), Teddy Ruxpin (too expensive), or Pound Puppies (no idea on that one!).

I did have A La Carte Kitchen, Fashion Wheel, Petite Typewriter, office in a box, Keepers, and loads of My Little Pony and Barbie toys. The Pony nursery was my favourite, and Peaches and Cream Barbie. I was four when I got the Barbie, my first, I remember because I kept asking for it when the advert came on but my parents told me Santa only gave that to kids who were five and above. My excitement that Christmas morning was off the scale 😊

Also had Fun Fax, which was amazing! I now have a fluro pink adult Filofax and may or may not have stickers for the calendar... 😬

Keeping2ChevronsApart · 21/10/2021 23:33

I always wanted a Sindy house. I did get a wardrobe for her clothes but no house to put it in 🙁 My cousins had the mop top hairshop, I was allowed to play with it for about a minute, then it was snatched away.

My eldest daughter had the a la carte kitchen, so at least someone got what they wanted!

WitchyNameChange · 21/10/2021 23:34

@IckyPop my friend had a soda stream and it was awesome. Unfortunately I never got one of them either.

I did get a Spirograph though. Which is crap because I never wanted one, not my thing at all.

Best present as a kid had to be the Simple Simon electronic game (anyone remember that?)

FruityPolos · 21/10/2021 23:48

Never got a Mr Frosty ('waste of money' apparently), did have fashion wheel, dairy milk dispenser, loads of Sylvanian Families but never the expensive mansion with working lights, used to look at that all the time in the catalogue and dream!

Also one of those space hopper stand on things that looked liked planet Saturn. Couldn't ever do that though.

StorminaBcup · 21/10/2021 23:54

I had a simple Simon! I remember playing it in bed when I should have been asleep and always forgetting to turn the sound off!

Did anyone else have a small plastic hand held toy that had a gem on the front of it, it opened up and you could fold out a doll. I think mine had blue hair. Terrible description but I have no idea what it was called.

I had a cabbage patch doll but for some reason that evaded me then and evades me now, she was ‘special’ and that meant I had to ask to play with her and when I did, my mam took off her shoes! 😂

Fucking nuts.
