Breaking news on Sky. David Amess MP has been stabbed ‘multiple times’. Feels like Jo Cox all over again, surely MPs need security around them? Some of the comments they receive on social media are off the scale. All parties as well. I can’t imagine a US Senator wandering around without security?

@PersonaNonGarter

This is where Angela Rayner’s ‘scum’ remarks get us.

People genuinely believe politicians are justified targets of abuse.

My first thought too. Poor man
Tealightsandd · 15/10/2021 15:02

@MarshaBradyo

Verbal abuse is an end of a spectrum

It is not equal to but an environment which breeds the same

The same way women suffer verbal abuse at one end and far worse at the other.

People who try to dismiss the former as childlike are very much part of the problem.

No, people who try to finger point and/or a witch-hunt and/or encourage further division are part of the problem.

Very few people, if any, haven't at one point in their lives used a childish insult towards someone.

That is NOT the same as real abuse (physical or verbal). Which absolutely is trivialised by that narrative.

SixTwirlingTutus · 15/10/2021 15:02

God Bless him. And his family.

Stickytreacle · 15/10/2021 15:02

Sounds like he may have died, how horrific. Thoughts to his poor family. Flowers

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2021 15:02

Oh no that is awful Sad

OvaHere · 15/10/2021 15:02

This is terrible. Poor man and his family. After Jo Cox I'd hoped this would never happen again.

I agree we can't speculate what led to this. The rationale of the man responsible may not make sense to anyone, we just don't know as yet.

All MPs I'm sure are rightly concerned about personal safety though as the last few years have been a rough ride politically.

Derbee · 15/10/2021 15:03

He has died from his injuries. Terrible.

DoraMaude · 15/10/2021 15:03

Such sad news. My thoughts are with his family and friends now.

I cannot believe that we have another example of male violence right here, and so many posters are looking to blame a woman.
I know utterly depressing but sadly predictable. Women who can’t wait to blame other women. Men couldn’t possibly be responsible for their own actions. 🙄
HerRoyalWitchyness · 15/10/2021 15:03

Oh no. RIP.

I think its more a problem with culture than an individual MP who has said some pretty dumb shit.

The only reason she was tolerated doing it, because of a wider dislike of MPs. Symptom, not cause.

And I'd argue thats the problem rather than specific incidents or personalities.

100% this.
StPaulandTheBrokenBones · 15/10/2021 15:03

Why do people feel the need to preface or qualify their comments with the fact that they are not a Tory. I do not see what possible relevance this has. A human being, who is also an MP, has been stabbed.

Attacks like this are going to make it much more difficult for the public to meet with their MP to discuss issues that are important to them.

And The Telegraph are reporting that he has now died. Awful.

boogiewithasuitcase · 15/10/2021 15:04

Oh no. Poor man. Daffodil

Tealightsandd · 15/10/2021 15:04

Is that definitely confirmed?

What horrible horrible news.

So upsetting.

His poor family Flowers

AlexaShutUp · 15/10/2021 15:04

That's terrible. So very sad.

No That’s simply not true. The person responsible is the perpetrator Do not pin this on Ms Rayner she didn’t incite or seek violence

This. And this is absolutely spot on:

Blaming AR is deflecting from the real issue here - just another violent man.

YearsSinceISawYou · 15/10/2021 15:04

Yes, The Guardian are reporting a man has died. Awful
