Breaking news on Sky. David Amess MP has been stabbed ‘multiple times’. Feels like Jo Cox all over again, surely MPs need security around them? Some of the comments they receive on social media are off the scale. All parties as well. I can’t imagine a US Senator wandering around without security?

What rise of violence? Statistics show the complete opposite www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/bulletins/crimeinenglandandwales/yearendingmarch2020#violent-crime

Not that that negates the impact of individual violence on victims and their family, like this poor man. But making hyperbolic, incorrect statements doesn't help.
@lemmein

Like it or not, she is in the mix or are you saying because she's a woman she may not have realised the effect her words might have had and should be given a free pass? Patronising, much.

She helped to light the torch and most reasonable people-probably not her- will realise this.
So many assumptions in one little post.

No-one knows the motivation behind the attack. I did hear on LBC the suspect had been detained under the MHA. I've no idea how true that is, I can't find anything online about it, but if so you could blame the crippling cuts to MH services over the last 10 years Hmm

Regardless, I think the last few years have shown (well actually, no, historically!) that violent men don't need any motivation for their behaviour. Blaming AR is deflecting from the real issue here - just another violent man.

@Tealightsandd

I'm not especially keen on Angela but the last thing we need right now is a witch-hunt - stirring up more hate - against another MP.
That’s not stirring up hate. It’s noting that Respect for public servants is essential for MPs own safety.
whineybing · 15/10/2021 14:55

BBC news have just reported that he is in a serious condition and had to be operated on at the scene

Jaysmith71 · 15/10/2021 14:55

A man did this. A woman tried to murder Stephen Timms in 2010.

Less finger-pointing all round would be a good thing.

LadyWithLapdog · 15/10/2021 14:56

@JaniieJones now’s not the time but he’s been let off so easily, nay, applauded for the high jinks he provides so double standards?

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2021 14:56

Verbal abuse is an end of a spectrum

It is not equal to but an environment which breeds the same

The same way women suffer verbal abuse at one end and far worse at the other.

People who try to dismiss the former as childlike are very much part of the problem.

Smokeahontas · 15/10/2021 14:56

This is absolutely dreadful news. I really hope he pulls through.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 15/10/2021 14:56

@JaniieJones

I'm surprised he is apparently still been treated at the scene it's been ages since the first report. Surely best place to treat him would be at a hospital. Even if unsurvivable injuries just get him to a hospital.
Air ambulances don't just pick up patients, they bring in medics (often highly skilled trauma specialists) who can do way more on the scene than an ambulance-borne paramedic team.

You can't read anything into the time on ground at the site

AlexaShutUp · 15/10/2021 14:57

Oh dear. I really hope that he will be OK.
JumperandJacket · 15/10/2021 14:57

can you imagine the cost of round-the-clock security staff for all of them?

Attacks generally happen at Constituency surgeries (Jo Cox, Stephen Timms, Nigel Jones/Andrew Pennington) as that’s where it’s easiest for people to access MPs. You could make them far safer simply by having security there.

That said, if it takes round-the-clock security to make them reasonably safe, it’s perfectly affordable and we should do it.

MsTSwift · 15/10/2021 14:57

Think of this when there is the next thread bitching about MPs being paid £80k 🙄.

DoraMaude · 15/10/2021 14:58

I commented that Angela Raynor's comments were disgraceful. I would not be allowed to speak about my colleagues in such a way. However she is in no way responsible for this attack.

Artichokeleaves · 15/10/2021 14:58

Poor man and his poor family. Appalling.

Verbal abuse, threats of all kinds all over social media have become far too normalised and accepted, and that breeds the kind of thinking that leads to someone feeling entitled to knife someone they disagree with.

An absolute stamp down is needed that all threats of violence are made unacceptable whether on twitter or in the street and dealt with as a serious issue with consequences. Dehumanising people in language and politics needs stamping on equally firmly. Ffs we have people in universities standing on stage talking about knifing people they disagree with and how aroused they are about it - this ridiculous lack of normal boundaries and basic respect for others is the breeding ground for this.

Nahhh · 15/10/2021 14:58

Well i certainly wouldn't want him to represent me given his stance on abortion and gay rights

It’s perhaps inappropriate to attack his political views given the ongoing situation.

David Amess is Catholic and I imagine his views represent that.

I went to school with one of his daughters and consequently met him on a personal level a few times. I don’t agree with the politics of his party as a whole but as an individual he is a lovely, kind, generous man who has served his local area really well for a very long time.

I pray that he recovers from this attack and that his family are being well supported at this time.

SueSaid · 15/10/2021 15:00

'However, I don't think she should be blamed for this'

Oh I don't blame her. I blame the person who stabbed him.

The point is high profile people should be mindful of how their divisive and hate filled rhetoric is absolutely unacceptable.

HarrisonStickle · 15/10/2021 15:00

It never feels like there will be good news when injured people are treated at the scene and not immediately transferred to a hospital. Sad

Sapphire387 · 15/10/2021 15:00

I cannot believe that we have another example of male violence right here, and so many posters are looking to blame a woman.

LizBennet · 15/10/2021 15:01

Awful news Sad

Some of these comments are shameful 🙄

ronkey · 15/10/2021 15:02

Oh that's so sad

Jumpingintochristmas · 15/10/2021 15:02

It would appear the man has died. Tragic for any public servant.
