Breaking news on Sky. David Amess MP has been stabbed ‘multiple times’. Feels like Jo Cox all over again, surely MPs need security around them? Some of the comments they receive on social media are off the scale. All parties as well. I can’t imagine a US Senator wandering around without security?

@SinisterBumFacedCat

Jesus the narrative of blame has started already and of course it alights upon a woman Hmm

I don’t agree with her comments, but my God it was an actual MAN who did this. Already he need take no responsibility for his actions, well done MN.

Criticism is not because she's a woman, but because she's a politician and should know and do better. She saw what happened to Jo Cox. She has told MPS they need to dial down their language but doesn't think she needs to dial down hers. She won't go to prison for her words, nothing to do with her sex but everything to do with the law. The man who stabbed David Amess will go to prison, nothing to do with his sex, but everything to do with the law.

I hope David Amess makes a full recovery. It is shocking.

No one knows why it has happened but I can't believe people are blaming Angela Rayner. Politicians from all sides criticize each other all the time, that doesn't mean they are instructing members of the public to be violent towards opposition politicians.

@AlexaShutUp

I actually feel quite sick. That poor man. My heart goes out to his family.
This is how I fell too. So so sad.
TheFairyCaravan · 15/10/2021 15:06

I’ve just seen on Sky News that he’s died. How sad Sad.

RJnomore1 · 15/10/2021 15:06

This is awful. Regardless of politics it looks like someone has gone to work this morning and been killed doing their job. That should never happen to anyone.

(It’s not been confirmed it’s him, I realise it’s almost certainly him but just to point that out for the moment )

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/10/2021 15:06

Confirmed he has died

RIP

Notonthestairs · 15/10/2021 15:06

"I think its more a problem with culture than an individual MP who has said some pretty dumb shit.

The only reason she was tolerated doing it, because of a wider dislike of MPs. Symptom, not cause.

And I'd argue thats the problem rather than specific incidents or personalities."

I agree with this from RedToothBrush.

Where do we go from here?

I'm so very sorry for his family & friends.

LatteToday · 15/10/2021 15:06

@HowardNoir perhaps you should read my earlier comment about the ‘support’ that MPs are offered in terms of ‘security’ at surgeries.

There is no security.
They’re expected to be available for people to meet with no security.
I work for anMp.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/10/2021 15:07

Threewheeler1 · 15/10/2021 15:07

Oh god. This is awful. His poor family and the people who were there and worked with him. Shocking.

Daughter getting married in December

Saucery · 15/10/2021 15:08

Just appalling. How utterly sad for his family and all those who knew him.

Let’s not bat blame back and forth between parties, it’s not really the time or place. A thread about more temperate language in and around Parliament would be useful, but let’s not swamp this one with blame.

Dreadful news.

YearsSinceISawYou · 15/10/2021 15:09

Out of an elected MP's mouth-a very senior politician-came the remarks that her opposition are scum.

Her sex matters not.

The remarks could easily inflame.

I don't care if she is a man, a woman or a unicorn but what she can't be allowed to do is hide behind her sex or be given a pass for it.

A person made those remarks. That person didn't kill this poor man but is not blameless.

I hope she realises this but I wouldn't bet on it.

RJnomore1 · 15/10/2021 15:09

Oh sorry I see sky are reporting it’s him - bbc read the police statement which only states a man has died.

Pavlova31 · 15/10/2021 15:09

Poor poor poor man Sad
That was appalling.
I really hope he is ok.

Level75 · 15/10/2021 15:09

That's so awful.

The only person responsible is the man (and it will be a man) who stabbed him. Not AR.

Jowak1 · 15/10/2021 15:09

Regardless of what political party you support he was a father, a son, a husband he had a family- this is disgusting RIP
