An MP has just been stabbed.

Breaking news on Sky. David Amess MP has been stabbed ‘multiple times’. Feels like Jo Cox all over again, surely MPs need security around them? Some of the comments they receive on social media are off the scale. All parties as well. I can’t imagine a US Senator wandering around without security?

Awful thing to happen. I'm no Tory but I hope he pulls through.

Pinkfairylights · 15/10/2021 14:30

This is horrendous. I wish him a speedy recovery.

AlexaShutUp · 15/10/2021 14:30

It really doesn't matter if we agree or disagree with his stance on anything. He is an elected politician, serving the community that elected him. He should be permitted to do that without any risk to his personal safety.

Tealightsandd · 15/10/2021 14:31

At the end of the day, whilst I don't like the intolerant tribalism and aggression that leads to 'scum' labels, there is absolutely no justification for violence.

People used the same wording about the Conservatives in the 80s but MPs weren't stabbed then.

There's a world of difference between school playground slurs, and violent attacks.

The attacker should not be allowed to hide behind excuses.

crankysaurus · 15/10/2021 14:31

Shit. At a constituency surgery too. Hope he makes it through okay.

Jaysmith71 · 15/10/2021 14:31

The worry is the air ambulancce is parked and everybody is standing around.

Steven Timms (Lab) and Nigel Jones (LD) have also been stabbed at constituency surgeries in the past twenty years.

This is nothing to do with party politics.

LatteToday · 15/10/2021 14:32

Advice given to MPs in terms of keeping safe in surgeries includes things like ‘try and have a table between you and the constituent’ and ‘have a member of staff with you’ and ‘get people to make appointments in advance rather than just letting them turn up’ (the last one makes people complain- they want to be able to just turn up.

I work for an MP.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2021 14:32

I hope he recovers and recovers well. No MP deserves this.

anon12345678901 · 15/10/2021 14:32

It's absolutely awful, I hope he's okay. No MP should ever be at risk of violence simply because they represent a party and others may not agree with that party.

SueSaid · 15/10/2021 14:32

@PersonaNonGarter

This is where Angela Rayner’s ‘scum’ remarks get us.

People genuinely believe politicians are justified targets of abuse.

Absolutely. She stokes hatred and division with her offensive comments then whines on about how horrid it is that a MP has been attacked.

Stupid woman. I really wish her party would get rid of her.

nauticant · 15/10/2021 14:33

I wonder whether this will make the Labour Party rethink about failing to support Rosie Duffield in the face of the considerable and continual amount of abuse she's enduring?

Percypigg · 15/10/2021 14:34

I do hope he makes a full recovery. His daughter is due to get married in December apparently. It's all v sad.

ShrillSiren · 15/10/2021 14:34

This is what happens when you dehumanise people, such as calling them scum.

Jo Cox was killed long before Rayner said that. The rise of violence in our society is the cause.
PersonaNonGarter · 15/10/2021 14:36

He is a public servant carrying out his duties in good faith. It’s awful.

SueSaid · 15/10/2021 14:36

'Jo Cox was killed long before Rayner said that. The rise of violence in our society is the cause.'

Well it doesn't help does it! Shouting 'tory scum' repeatedly may just be the trigger a psychopath needs.

IHateCoronavirus · 15/10/2021 14:37

I hope he makes a full recovery. Poor family. Life can change in an instant.

Tealightsandd · 15/10/2021 14:37

The rise of violence in our society is the cause.

This.

MarshaBradyo · 15/10/2021 14:38

It’s not going to help if politicians normalise abuse

Really sad this has happened

Blossomtoes · 15/10/2021 14:38

This is complete bollocks and an attempt to defect blame. Who would you have blamed if it had been an MP who wasn’t a Tory?
DialSquare · 15/10/2021 14:38

This is horrible. Thoughts with him and his family.. This is pretty local to me too.

MrsR87 · 15/10/2021 14:39

How awful. I hope he makes a full recovery.

I want to weep at the state of our society.

SueSaid · 15/10/2021 14:39

I'm surprised he is apparently still been treated at the scene it's been ages since the first report. Surely best place to treat him would be at a hospital. Even if unsurvivable injuries just get him to a hospital.

Tealightsandd · 15/10/2021 14:39

I'm not especially keen on Angela but the last thing we need right now is a witch-hunt - stirring up more hate - against another MP.

DoraMaude · 15/10/2021 14:39

This is dreadful. A man doing nothing but his job of work, elected by the people he serves.

Angela Rayner's comments were disgusting. To speak about other elected MPs in such a way, when they have been democratically elected, is disgraceful.
