I wouldn't have recognised Madonna

I've just read an article about a recent appearance by Madonna on an American chat show (Daily Mail, sorry). She's changed so much, I don't think I would have recognised her if the article hadn't said who it was.

I never knew that about Debbie Harry she always looks her age and classy with it tho not over the top. My favourite ever Madonna look was the pinstripe suit in the Vogue video she was sexy as hell.

@Scrollonthroughtherain - I agree with you wholeheartedly. I think it would be far more revolutionary for women within music to age and to be seen ageing. I give you Patti Smith - still going strong although obviously her sexuality wasn't her USP as Madonna's was.

LOL Patti Smith has looked like that since birth :)

If I had all that fame and fortune I'd be stitched up to the nines. I have no interest in 'growing old gracefully' and neither does Madonna it would appear.

I love any woman who does whatever the fuck she wants at 63. You do you, Madonna!

I hadn't thought about it before but I think this is exactly why I think this sort of behaviour (flashing your arse and lying on the talk show hosts desk) - because it doesn't come across as a woman "doing whatever the fuck she wants".

It has an undertone of desperately seeking attention and shock value.

As I said in my early post, it really shows when you think of how she was at the height of her super-fame. She virtually never did talk shows, rarely did interviews. That is probably how she prefers it.

Watch this interview she did before her performance at Eurovision 2019 and look at how uncomfortable she looks. Her whole body language - her hands virtually wringing at some points, her tense facial expression. She really doesn't look like she wants to be there or is having fun. That's just one example

But in 2021 it really isn't that shocking so hence it seems sad and desperate.

REALLY doing what you want because you don't give a fuck is not about embarrassing or demeaning yourself in order to get audience, publicity or clicks.

It must be incredibly difficult coming to terms with getting older when you’ve been so famous and adored. It’s hard enough as an ordinary person. It is sad to see her like this.

I think Madonna cares very much about remaining relevant. She's always been prickly about what people think of her.

Remember that interview for the MTV awards when Courtney Love threw her shoe at Madonna then fell arse over tit because she was off her face? And meanwhile Madonna was the cool classy one? Somehow, to me, she doesn't feel like the cool classy one anymore. She's more like a trainwreck Courtney Love.

Oh yes, I remember that. Madonna was wearing Tom Ford for Gucci (I loved that look on her), Courtney was a mess and Madonna was irritated by her but trying to conceal it! Grin

Yep! Loved it, especially when Madonna got up mid interview and walked off 😁

Sorry me again!

Slagging of famous women who don't behave as they 'should' never gets old does it!

Meanwhile famous men do ridiculous, awful, criminal things and get nowhere near this sort of attitude.

Anyway. Courtenay love.

I'll put the main point first. She warned about Harvey Weinstein in a brief comment to a reporter at an event in 2005. She would have known he had the power to end careers and he had done so. She says I'm going to be libelled, pauses, and goes ahead.
I think she's incredible for that alone.

Plus. (I was on alternative scene when nirvana came onto scene and obv hole played a lot as well).

  • Great band. Celebrity skin- brilliant video song about how women in music/ film etc are treated and seen. Worth a look interested to know if anyone does and what they think!

  • Another woman men saw as sexy but scary they don't like that

  • Messy yes. No denying it. Having your husband shoot himself dead when you have a 2yo isn't exactly fun though. Esp if he's as big a star as that and you are in the public eye too and a popular press target.

  • After that the swathe of theories that she had him killed, drove him to it, that STILL go on. Yes their problems relationship were a mess. However. His close friends said they always knew he would die young. He was a mess before he met her. If she was hated before it was nothing to after.

  • And I think that happening, if she was drunk irrational etc. Yes she was always a mess but that's a huge trauma on top.

Sorry I know it's not in the spirit.

I think that reducing women like these down to one thing I dunno. I just don't like it.

Same as men we behave in all sorts of ways. Men seem to get the things they do that are crap, embarrassing, etc taken with everything else about them though. And worse. They do appalling shit. Hide for a period. Then back again. Eg Mel Gibson.

Oh Gerbil Madonna made a complete tit of herself on the Jimmy Fallon show. Age is irrelevant - I'd say the same if Emma Raducanu or Adele had dressed like that and humped the desk. It was awful.

And her face has been spoilt by fillers, whatever - same goes for Nicole Kidman, Courtney Cox and Jennifer Aniston. They look weird.

I completely agree - men do terrible things and I don’t defend their behaviour or minimise it at all, but c’mon - flashing your bum and sprawling all over and interviewers desk is not progress or empowerment, it’s just not. We’re still - in 2021 - seeing successful women resorting to using their sexuality to get noticed.

If you want to start a thread about Mel Gibson or any other male who have behaved appalling then I’ll be all over it, and I can assure you my posts won’t be defending them.

If you know anything about Courtney Love you'll know she was a mess long before she met Kurt Cobain and became famous. She's cool and talented, but she was still a mess. She's probably the most sane and sober now than she's been since early teens.

For me, that’s not it. As a poster said, she doesn’t look like she wants to be dry-humping desks and her erstwhile relationship with the media was to be fairly aloof.

I think it’s sad that she’s Madonna(!) and yet she, and the producers of the Jimmy Fallon show decided that the way to promote her was to have her “spontaneously” dry-hump a desk because it looked “boring”.

No one is saying she needs to be demure or act her age, whatever that means but it doesnt feel organic.

Yeah, Courtney Love is a a very interesting character but her issues did not begin with Kurt Cobain.

@GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr

Oh gosh - I don’t mean to offend? Women and me of any age should be having as much sex as they like and enjoying their bodies.

But, seriously (I am 50 btw) - IMHO parading around is a youngster’s game - let’s not kid ourselves ffs - I don’t derive any pleasure from seeing middle aged men (even fit ones) prancing about wishing they were still 20-30.

I just think it’s embarrassing - we’ve all been young and gorgeous and we should leave it right there :)

nolongersurprised · 09/10/2021 22:01

The whole clip is disrespectful. Jimmy Fallon’s lead in of how it’s Madonna, he’s nervous because she always does something really unpredictable in interviews etc then the “crazy” thing she does is hump a desk.

Why couldn’t the producers have gone with how it’s Madonna! the icon and the trial blazer and spent more time actually interviewing her. She’s an interesting woman.

To me she just looks like a slightly older Madonna still being Madonna. She got stick in 2000 when she was in her early forties for doing that music video dressed as a cowgirl where she looked absolutely knock out and already people started with the ageist bullshit. It's exhausting being a female celebrity I imagine.

Report
NiceGerbil · 09/10/2021 22:10

I never said what she did was empowering etc.

I said she's Madonna she can do what she fucking well likes. And I get much doubt she cares what anyone thinks. She's been slagged off widely whatever she did for her whole career!

Maybe she's lost the plot
Maybe she's a chronic attention attention seeker who is getting more bizarre as she gets older/ not so much limelight
Maybe she enjoys shocking people
Maybe she finds it funny to see the outrage
Maybe she is thinking fuck you to those who started saying she should 'put it away' in her.. late 40s? Early 50s? Before?

I mean I just think so what really.

Like I say I grew up with her. I personally don't look like reducing these women down to one thing out of their whole lives.

Report
NiceGerbil · 09/10/2021 22:12

Of course she was a mess before. They both were.

I obviously didn't get my point across.

The fact is that mess or not. That happening and the reactions etc must have really fucked her up. On top of everything else.

I mean it's amazing she's not dead too really.
