I wouldn't have recognised Madonna

I've just read an article about a recent appearance by Madonna on an American chat show (Daily Mail, sorry). She's changed so much, I don't think I would have recognised her if the article hadn't said who it was.

I really doubt she gives a shit.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/10/2021 11:43

@Onandoff

She was never going to end up in a twin set and pearls was she?

Shame about all the plastic surgery though, looks like a drag looky likey had a stroke.

Well, she's already had the twin set and pearls phase. Complete with an English accent. When she was going through her lady of the manor phase during the Guy Ritchie years.
notacooldad · 09/10/2021 11:50

The most ridiculous thing about the interview was Jimmy Fallon fawning over her as well as the faux shock when she started humping the desk.
It was just one big yawn!

nolongersurprised · 09/10/2021 12:00

the faux shock when she started humping the desk

This is exactly it.

I mean, she’s Madonna! When did she go from being genuinely ground-breaking to resorting to scripted desk-humping?

It’s all very “meta” - does Madonna give a shit that no one gave a shit about said desk-humping? Definitely she went to some effort to go on the show and plan her scripted spontaneous arse revealing

Bluntness100 · 09/10/2021 12:03

I thought she looked at her absolute best when she was with guy but I don’t think it was really her, more she was playing the feminine little wife. I think she was trying to suppress herself to be what he wanted.

I wouldn't have recognised Madonna

@avarua

"I love any woman who does whatever the fuck she wants at 63. You do you, Madonna!"

This is just what Madonna does, a big part of her act has always been designed to shock, to be controversial, to get people talking. Often that’s for what some people deem the “wrong reasons”, she was doing that in the 1980’s and it’s no surprise she’s still doing it. I quite like that about her, she’s gutsy, and it’s in keeping with her character to grow old disgracefully. This raises interesting questions about women and ageing, and society’s judgement of ageing women and what is acceptable. I think that’s what she’s trying to do, it’s the sort of thing she’s always done. She’s a clever, interesting woman.

MrsFin · 09/10/2021 12:18

@nolongersurprised

I’m not sure it really achieved its aim though - (non literal) exposure, controversy etc.

We’re talking about it here because the OP provided a link which made me do a Twitter search for the clip. This is because I grew up with Madonna and I like her. I’m shocked by how odd she looks in the clip but that’s not the point.

Although it was clearly scripted to be shocking it didn’t seem to have made much of a ripple. Her arse-exposing writhing didnt trend on Twitter Grin and no one really seemed that interested.

I suppose it engenders an interesting debate on here about whether a 63 year old flashing their arse is inherently shocking or not but it certainly didn’t “break the Internet”. Maybe she doesn’t care if most people didn’t really pay any attention?

My point was that I didn't recognise her. Not that she shouldn't have had surgery (although I think it's a shame that she, or anyone, feels they need to).
I thought she'd put on weight, but a PP said she'd had implants.
I hadn't expected all these posts vilifying her for how she looks and behaves! Blush

I agree that Madonna looked great during the Richie era but her persona didn't feel sincere. Of all the different phases she's assumed over the years, that's the one that seemed the most forced.

BarefootHippieChick · 09/10/2021 12:25

If you want to see someone looking fabulous in her 60s (and now 70s) try Helen Mirren. Not Madonna.

nolongersurprised · 09/10/2021 12:32

I’m not actually vilifying her. I’m just disappointed that her “shocking” arse-baring, desk-humping was so obviously scripted. Others may find that provocative, I don’t.

BorderlineHappy · 09/10/2021 12:42

I watched her documentary Madame X last night.
It really felt like you were watching a show in a theater.
She interacted with the crowd, her kids where involved.
It did lag in some places but over all it shows she's still a force.

She's still thinking outside the box.
Frozen with Lola dancing on the screen behind was so beautiful.

MaudebeGonne · 09/10/2021 12:43

Cher used to get the same sort of grief. She looks exactly like what I would expect her to look like. I am not a massive Madonna fan, I like some of her songs and her videos. And it was always her videos (and her look) that got people talking back in the day. She is as much about vision as sound.

paisley256 · 09/10/2021 12:53

I would have loved to have seen her age naturally like Debbie Harry for example.

Bluntness100 · 09/10/2021 13:03

She’s defintely gained weight, she’s not remotely fat but we are used to seeing her much slimmer and less curvy.

Personally I think she still looks great and like Madonna, and I think if we didn’t know her age we’d think she was in her early to mid forties. The issue is we all know exactly how old she is.

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 09/10/2021 13:40

Still picking apart a woman's appearance and making derogatory comments about her age/looks/behaviour, I see.

This thread is all kinds of depressing.

I love Cher. She wore some dodgy costumes but she was a show woman. I can't imagine her dry-humping a desk, either then or now.

Madonna can wear what she wants and do what she wants. But do you think she'd be behaving like this if she didn't want the attention to publicise her next project? If she'd gone to the interview dressed demure and had a chat with Fallon, who'd even care, never mind remember? She wanted attention and she got attention, but she's not going to be surprised that the response is not all good. For those of you who hate her being criticised, have a bit of respect for her intelligence. She's a business woman. She knows what she's doing.

AmanitaRubescens · 09/10/2021 16:41

At the risk of being accused of pearl clutching...

You know how female singers cavort half naked in highly sexualised videos? Madonna played a huge part in that becoming the norm for women which I find utterly depressing. Agnetha & Frida (ABBA) and Stevie Nicks were hugely successful without resorting to that.

And it's not pandering to the patriarchy to say the cosmetic procedures have spoilt her face. But it's also true that she would have been vilified if she'd aged naturally like, say, Bo Derek. Whereas Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Woods can be wizened and still lauded for being rock stars in their 70s.

AmanitaRubescens · 09/10/2021 16:43

Bo Derek

I wouldn't have recognised Madonna

Debbie Harry has had surgery.
StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/10/2021 16:45

Yeah, I love Debbie Harry but she's no stranger to a facelift.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 09/10/2021 16:48

Whereas Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Woods can be wizened and still lauded for being rock stars in their 70s.

True although maybe there's more pressure having been a pop star rather than a rock star. Patti Smith is ageing naturally, and looking cool as fuck with it. But I don't think that approach would have suited Madonna whose image was always as important as her musical output.

Scrollonthroughtherain · 09/10/2021 16:52

She needs to put it away. How many men would climb all over the desk and flash their arse like that. No bloody dignity.

Scrollonthroughtherain · 09/10/2021 17:03

What would be more shocking in 2021 is a woman in the public eye aging naturally and keeping her arse covered in an interview. Seeing semi naked women getting various body parts out on TV isn't unusual these days. Don't care what age they are, it's not empowering for women to do things specifically that appeal to the male gaze. The truly brave thing to do, it seems, is to NOT get plastic surgery.

Bluntness100 · 09/10/2021 17:05

Bo dereks had at least two face lifts! 😂
