I wouldn't have recognised Madonna

I've just read an article about a recent appearance by Madonna on an American chat show (Daily Mail, sorry). She's changed so much, I don't think I would have recognised her if the article hadn't said who it was.

I don’t think you are tackling ageism when you are trying to look 30

Click the link, thats from when she was 30. So even when she was younger she got called out.
Ageism is horrible at any age.
She didnt deserve it then, she doesnt deserve it now.

This is the whole problem, when she was young she was overtly sexual as a fuck you. Now she is overtly sexual because it's expected of her, plastic surgery to look younger because society says you're worthless if you're not young, this is NOT a fuck you it's conforming to industry/societal misogyny. Women are now (on top of everything else) to never get old.

Excellent post, I completely agree!

It’s sad to read how many posters (mainly women) think this is absolutely fine and it’s ‘empowering’ as she’s older.

It’s completely the opposite- she’s had to have dangerous, expensive surgery and has to flash her new butt cheeks off because she’s not allowed to look older else she won’t be successful.
Like every other women on tv you either look young or you don’t have a job - men don’t have this problem.

We shouldn’t be congratulating someone and saying they look great when they don’t look anything like themselves.

To me shes tackling female ageism in the music industry.

It’s not tackling ageism when you have to have surgery to make yourself look younger.

I wonder how many ageing men have to go to such extremes just to stay popular.

Yes it really is @parentinghelp1.

I can remember loads of threads saying that Paul McCartney sounded terrible at the Olympics but none criticising him for the way he looked. In fact I can't remember a single thread about a male older pop/ rock star being criticised for his looks.

And this thread isn't about her behaviour. It's literally about the way she looks.

I'm older than her. She looks good, but is a bit exhibitionist for me! I am not a fan of fillers, facelifts ad botox, and I wonder what her kids think. Mine would be sooooo embarrassed.

and my arse looks better than hers but I'm deluded

Theres a thread about Elton John.
Nothing is mentioned about his wig, which is his way of hanging on to his youth.
To me theres no difference.

I am a fan of madonna's
I cant believe how important it is to her to be sexy, to shock...

Over the years a lot of people have commented on his wigs, his baldness, his clothes, and his weight. Not to mention his temperament. But he hasn't really changed so there's only so often you can say anything about his toupes. However, I'm pretty sure if he took his trousers off, flashed his underpants and humped a desk, people would comment.

@amusedtodeath1

This is the woman who publicly slated people who had plastic surgery...she seems increasingly desperate for attention. I'm sure lockdown hasn't helped, what with the lack of opportunity for people to tell her how fabulous she is.....

It's sad because she was fabulous, kick ass took no prisoners, she was my idol as a teen, but now, not so much.

If Madonna wore a wig because she was bald and people criticised her for that then I’d think they were pretty low for doing so.

I can’t remember a time recently when Elton John showed his bum on TV - did I miss that?

I feel very sorry for her.

She was a HUGE star - if you remember, after she became mega-famous she virtually never gave interviews and was more old Hollywood 'mysterious' because she was so famous she didn't need to. After the early days she never appeared on programmes live like Top of the Pops.

However, she missed the wave of social media - because she had passed the peak of her mega fame at that point.

If social media had existed when she was younger, she'd have been able to manage herself in a different way as she'd have a bigger social media reach. To put it in context, she has 2.7M Twitter followers; Taylor Swift has 88 M.

She is probably comparing herself with these younger people and struggling to keep up the only way she knows how - by trying to shock and be controversial. The world's moved on now though and flashing your arse on TV isn't particularly shocking or controversial in 2021, it looks desperate.

Good for her continuing to work at 63 but she would be doing all women more of a favour if she used her talent and skills to promote herself (and her amazing back catalogue). Rather than these sort of sad stunts. The Rolling Stones etc have kept working without this type of stuff.

@Worldgonecrazy

If my arse looks that good at 63 I will be flaunting it too.

It would be great if Madonna could use her voice and media power to help women move away from the ‘stay fuckable to stay relevant’ that is modern society though!

Your arse will likely only look like that at 63 if you’ve had it replaced by someone else’s arse (or the cosmetic procedure equivalent thereof).

Oh wow Twitter followers you say.
Right Madonna give back all your awards, and your 350 million records sold worldwide.
Cause Taylor has more followers than you.

Shes the og shock artist. She was shocking way before "the younger girls"came around.
And if you know anything about them, then you would know they all praise Madonna for opening the way for women to do their own thing.

It's ironic that she was always one to do her own thing and not give a fuck what anyone else thought, and now she's conforming in the most awful way.

Why shouldn't she behave how she wants at 63? So what if she's annoying/embarrassing etc? She's bloody well earned it and I hope when I'm that age I don't give a flying fuck about behaving appropriately/with decorum.

Meh, it's Madonna, she has been controversial for 40 years.

Her face is looking a bit frozen/odd though. Shame that women (in the public eye) feel the need to do this. Still, if she didn't have botox and collagen, she'd be slated for being haggard/rough, and looking 'old and tired.'

Let's face it, women can't win can we?

Oh I don't mean she WOULD be old and haggard and tired without botox and collagen!!! Just that this is what (some) people - especially in the media - would say!!!

I do feel sad about the fact some people say they feel sad for her. Why?
She looks great, she seems confident. She may have had some works done, but what's wrong with that if she feels happy about it?
Why do people need to feel sad about whatever choice other people made?

Absolutely - she can do what she wants, but I guarantee that if a 63 year old bloke with a face filled with Botox draped himself over a female interviewers desk and flashed his thong encased bum on national TV we’d be having a very different conversation about his ‘empowerment’

She's obviously been having fillers and botox for a few years but clearly got to the point where she thought 'fuck trying for the natural look, let's have everything lifted and pulled back as tight as possible'. I don't think she's enjoyed people like Gaga enjoying the career and accompanying limelight that was once hers. But I don't feel sorry for her. She's had an eventful life and she's got buckets of cash.

I do cringe a bit when I see pics of her with her 23 year old boyfriend. In exactly the same that I cringe when I see some old male rocker (Jagger, Jimmy Page) with their latest 20-something girlfriend.

I know she's certainly been influential, no denying that, but I get tired of people acting as though there were no female artists who influenced her. No groundbreaking female artists who existed before Madonna.

I love Madonna, she's a trailblazer but she just gets criticised instead of being applauded for what she has achieved. Most of the top female artists around today think they're original but Madonna did it first.

I think Adele looks ridiculous in those Vogue photos. Plumped up lips, Barbie hair, naff poses and clothes like an estate agent. Looks like she just turned up and did what she was told in order to sell records.

Same as Jesy Nelson who is currently channeling every African American female artist who has ever made a music video. Desperate and unoriginal.

Madonna does what she wants not what her record company tell her to do.

I love Madonna, and have done for 40 years, but I have to agree with much of this post. I think Madonna needs putting out to pasture now, I really do. Not because she is old and knackered or rubbish (or anything like that,) but more because of what you say. She is becoming desperate now, and looking like a really naff has-been, and a bit of an embarrassment.

I know many of us feel much younger than we are... But we manage it, and act our age (most of the time) I am in my mid 50s, but feel 25 in my head. I like video games and twitter and instagram and facebook, I have a smartphone, and the same 'mod cons' as people 30 years younger. I like 2010s and 2020s music, (as well as 1970s/80s/90/and 00s,) and lots of the same TV programmes as my 20-something DC like...

But I am a realist, and even though I feel 25, I know I am not... I don't dress like Billie Eilish, surround myself with 20 to 25 year old people, drape myself all over 21 year old men, wear skirts so short that my arse cheeks are hanging below it, go clubbing til 3am three nights a week, and drink booze until I am sick.

Madonna is still 22 in her head, and she really REALLY acts it. She hangs around people 35-40 years younger, and always has a boyfriend young enough to be her son, if not her grandson... The wacky, controversial, 'look how wild I am' act is old and tiresome now. She tries (and fails) to look 30 years younger. She looks like a woman in her late 50s/early 60s who has had a fuckload of wacky face procedures.
