I wouldn't have recognised Madonna

I've just read an article about a recent appearance by Madonna on an American chat show (Daily Mail, sorry). She's changed so much, I don't think I would have recognised her if the article hadn't said who it was.

Can anyone point me to the thread(s) about Mick Jagger having lost the plot/needing to put it away/being vulnerable?

Thanks!

@Embroidery

I think shes wonderful. Shes always been an icon to me and still is. I just watched the clip and shes still fab. Bit too bdsm for my likes but live and let live.
Misogyny in action with all the criticism and Im sick of it.

Rod Stewart (age 73) and the band Queen and the Stone Roses, The Fall etc etc dont get this agro.

Exactly, and Iggy Pop still takes his shirt off and he's like 70 or something. So what? It's that 'I don't give a fuck attitude'. Madonna is just doing what she has always done - she's always had a persona, always tried to shock and garner attention. Why should she fade into the background because she's in her 60's? Her attitude hasn't changed, but why should it?

I'm sure she thinks that many of the rock stars of the 80's have gotten boring or gone soft (and if you want to see some bad plastic surgery, check out some of the horrendous surgery a few of the older male rock stars and musicians have gone for).

The fact that it makes so many people uncomfortable because it's Madonna is annoying, considering how many young 'starlets' cavort around on stage humping things with practically no clothes on these days. It's nothing new, in fact, she practically invented it!

It's purely because she's a woman of a certain age, so she should just accept her lot in life, which is to be invisible. Ridiculous.

I'd be pretty happy if I looked like that at 63!

You can do as it’s called surgery!

I think you can do whatever you want as long as you don’t hurt people but it makes me so sad that women feel the need to have all this surgery to ‘stay pretty’.
I don’t think endless amounts of Botox, lip fillers and butt implants should be celebrated.

@MadameTuffington

I don’t get why some previously ragingly sexually attractive women still need to feel like this at 60 fucking 3 - purleeeease Madge, put your arse and vag AWAY - this is not 1986!

and I say this as a teen girl who was hooked on Madonna.

Sigh

You're quite right. Once women get to 60 they should send their vaginas to a vagina sanctuary where they can live out their days sedately munching on grass and thinking of all the lovely times they had when they were young, and allowed to be used for all the sexing.

Women don't need them after 60 after all, because everyone knows they don't have sex past their 60th birthday.

She can act and do what she wants, that’s not the issue but if someone dove that in a works doo, it wouldn’t be celebrated, they’d be the talk of the office!

But its not a works doo,shes in the entertainment industry.
Its not the same thing at all.

@YourFinestPantaloons

By wouldn't you have recognised her? She looks the same as ever.

Or is this a thinly veiled attempt to criticise her for not being a typical 63yo who knits and doesn't speak?

Is there any such thing as a "typical 63yo"?

I have many friends around this age and they are all individual interesting women. Who speak.

And I knit. As well as doing many many other things.

What an ageist post.

Female singers success depends on how provocative they are. The more skin they show, the more records they sell which is really sad.

She looks more and more like the latter years Mae West. Mae, however, had a great sense of her public self and a fabulous sense of humour which I haven't noticed here.

The entertainment industry doesn’t mean you have to get your arse and act like her, sprawled over a table in national TV.

She’s free to do what she wants and people are free to say she’s embarrassing herself and looks trashy.

Swings and roundabouts.

This is the whole problem, when she was young she was overtly sexual as a fuck you. Now she is overtly sexual because it's expected of her, plastic surgery to look younger because society says you're worthless if you're not young, this is NOT a fuck you it's conforming to industry/societal misogyny. Women are now (on top of everything else) to never get old.

@BoredZelda

And this thread is so sad - a bunch of women doing the patriarchy's job for them. sad

Yep. Tell women at every turn that they must look beautiful and young in order to stay relevant, then watch the women turn on each other for it.

Leave her be. Who cares what she looks like, is she still good at what she does?

It depends what you think she does. She’s never been a great singer, and now she’s not even a good one. But if you think her main objective was to be controversial and get people talking? She still succeeds at this, to an extent.

Despite the work, though, she’s still recognisably Madonna, I’m surprised that anyone wouldn’t immediately see this.

This.

I'm so irritated by the vacuous "but a 63-year-old woman shouldn't be out in public unless she's looking and behaving how society expects women of that age to be" faux horror.

It's depressing and a massive own goal given that it's mainly women posting. AngrySad

I have always loved Madonna and I always will.

Women dissecting other women's appearance is playing right into the hands of the patriarchy.

I must have watched a different video from everyone else because I have literally never seen anyone who looked more like Madonna. Are we supposed to be surprised that she isn’t quite as toned as she was in her 30s? FFS.

I think she looks good (even with the surgery). I was never a Madonna music fan, but she has done really well to still be around now when the others have become irrelevant or died. Good on her.

I don't think anyone took more stick than Miley Cyrus for her cringe-worthy, attention-seeking appearances. I mean if you're going to dry-hump people on stage, feedback is not going to be solely positive. Miley Cyrus is just as annoying as Madonna, maybe even more so. Cue the next lesbian roll around on stage. Sadly it's all so predictable.

To me shes tackling female ageism in the music industry.
You only have to look at this thread to realise that women over a certain age shouldnt do certain things.
Like have fun or have a younger bf.
Or still releasing albums that go to no.1.

At least shes not a throwback artist,reliving her glory years.That to me would be worse.

I don’t think you are tackling ageism when you are trying to look 30 when you are 60. That is just confirming that you need surgery as you grow older isn’t it?

Is it really? Or is it just staying an opinion about someone that clearly wants people to talk about them as they are attention seeking AF!!!!

I think what’s even sadder than the surgery, is the fact that any photo she puts on Instagram or whatever, is filtered so heavily as to make her look like an android.
