I've still but not for over all the James Herbert and the 'Flowers in the attic' books I read at 11!!

My 14 year old has watched it, as have all his mates ... meh!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 09/10/2021 20:24

I don't have any issue with people preferring dubbing. I get that some people can't cope with subtitles. But don't watch the dubbed version and then declare that it's crap acting, because that doesn't make you look particularly clever either.

EffOrf · 09/10/2021 20:29

I watched with subtitles and it was still shit

EffOrf · 09/10/2021 20:36

Is this a series that we have to like as some seem to get very aggressive when people think it's rubbish, very odd. I watched a couple of episodes as it came up as no 1 on Netflix and I usually take a look to see if series are worth watching and also there are a couple of threads raving about it.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 09/10/2021 21:03

@ISpyCobraKai I guess if you're good at reading faces, you could miss all kinds of microexpressions if you were reading subtitles - whereas if you got a lot from tone of voice, you'd do much better with the subtitles.

ISpyCobraKai · 09/10/2021 21:05

I watch loads of subtitled films, I just put the dubbing on this because of what I'd read.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 09/10/2021 21:05

@EffOrf Two words. Ali Abdul. We're still grieving Grin

Betrayal 😭😭😭

Babyroobs · 09/10/2021 21:28

I am binge watching - up to episode four tonight. I too am shocked at 12 year olds watching it. My 16 ear old dd has watched it.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 09/10/2021 21:43

I don't understand how it's not an 18 cert?!!

I felt traumatised by it and I'm 42 😵‍💫

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 09/10/2021 22:05

But if you can't cope with or access subtitles, then the acting of the dubbing is spectacularly bad, so it's fair to say so. Unfortunately no amount of good acting in the original language can fully make up for the voiceover sounding like amateurs from YouTube.

ItsAlwaysThere · 09/10/2021 22:06

I won't watch it as I'm not interested in overly-gory things. My year 8 child isn't allowed to watch, and I do have controls on her Netflix profile. It's set to 12.

I know all the youngsters are talking about it but a lot of that is made-up. I remember pretending to have watched all sorts at her age.

Crunchymum · 09/10/2021 22:15

Episode 3 done.... and I still can't figure out subtitles Shock

I'm enjoying it but can't bingen watch.

@DockOTheBay We thought exactly the same thing! Amazing actors, plot, dialogue etc and then when the VIPs were introduced they sounded so terrible. Literally the sort of wooden acting I'd expect to see on a daytime soap and felt completely at odds with everything else 🤷🏻‍♀️

mummabubs · 10/10/2021 05:57

@ISpyCobraKai I grew up with subtitles on everything due to having a deaf sibling and now actively choose to have subtitles on. Don't ever feel like I miss anything that's happening 😊

DockOTheBay · 10/10/2021 06:00

@TheGrumpyGoat

A series in which women are raped and organs are harvested from live people is ‘tame’? Bloody hell. I’d hate to see your ‘extreme’.
I absolutely agree that this isn't a show for kids. HOWEVER I think your post is exaggerating somewhat. None of that happens on screen, it is just referred to. And the character who hears about it is clearly horrified. So while I don't disagree with you, if someone is reading this and deciding whether its a level of violence they themselves might like to watch - this doesn't actually happen in the show.
bunnybuggs · 10/10/2021 07:36

@CoastalWave

Wow. There are some truly shit parents on this thread.

And shit like this shouldn't even be made. It's disturbing.

this a million times. When mothers get het up about women being objectified and how 'men' are such sadists and potential rapists by nature - then say it is OK that young boys particularly can watch this sort of stuff and 'enjoy' it. I am also slightly worried about the number of posters who say they found it fun and thrilling and binge watched it. What kind of people get their entertainment in that way? I know it is fiction and acting and not real - but it is desensitising people to real cruelty and horror in actual life Shock
00100001 · 10/10/2021 07:41

You do see the harvesting of organs in t he show. Did you not see the bit where they removed an eyeball, a liver etc? You do see Aman kick another man to death. You do see people push others to their deaths through glass panes. You do see bodies hung from rafters. You do see a man hang himself. You do see a mass execution where people are scrambling over dead bodies in order to try and escape. You do see people shot in the head. You see people bet not to be killed. You do see people betray each other.

Yes, you don't see the rape, but do you need your child to to hear about how a group of been decided to have sex with a dying woman...ie rape her.

holidaynearlyover · 10/10/2021 08:02

Too many parents trying to be cool.

I remember at school lots of us not allowed to watch certain things, if never scarred us it just meant we had to wait 🙄.

My 13 year old will not be watching this, my 15 year old has chosen not to. Funnily enough my children can think for themselves and don't need to follow the crowd. We only have one Netflix account so I know they aren't watching it without me!

What makes me mad is that he won and was so nice he got manipulated into playing again! AngrySad

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/10/2021 09:32

RIP Ali. Sad

I do agree that the VIPs were weird and a bit rubbish. When they first appeared, DH and I were both Confused to the point that I asked whether they were Korean actors trying to do American accents - they just sounded so stilted.

At the risk of sounding finicky, though, I'm going to dig my heels in and say that crap dubbing is crap dubbing. If I downed two bottles of wine and then belched the entire plot of Citizen Kane at you, you wouldn't say it was crap and badly acted on the basis of my performance Grin

Squid Game is one of very few films/dramas I've seen where I get an unshakeable gut reaction on seeing some of the actors. I'm sure Han Mi-Nyeo ('babe' woman) is lovely irl, but I don't think I could bear to be in a room with her. Similarly Ali and Gi-Hun could burn my house down and I'd probably just stand there going 'Awwww' 😍

00100001 · 10/10/2021 09:44

Yeah the VIPs were shit.

Silverswirl · 10/10/2021 10:05

I struggle generally with really cruel violent tv, but watching a small clip of a close up of someone treading on a dead persons arm to escape a mass shooting, and a close up of a womans face that gets sprayed with blood from someone getting shot in the head, then rubbing it in her cheeks told me all I need to know.
People who watch this are getting off on the horror gore violence element which is fine (I guess?) if you are an adult. But my 12 year old daughter won’t be watching it any time soon - I don’t want those images in her head right now and quite honestly why would you?

Crunchymum · 10/10/2021 10:58

I'm only on episode 4 (so no spoilers please)

I watched a clip on Gogglebox. It’s not my bag at all. 😫
