1. Mix of Battle Royale/Lord of the flies/Running man/The Purge/Rich men hunting men genre

1. The dubbing is poor but the plot is worth sticking with. I watch subtitles with everything.

1. Squid Game is being mentioned by gamer youtubers along with roblox and Minecraft facsimiles and was on gogglebox on Friday... So many young 'uns will have inadvertently come across it

1. I watched horror movies from young and then worked in a video shop, avoided most of the video nasties at the time, but have a reasonable knowledge of film and directors. I do think that there is a lot to be discussed - same as with The Platform and Parasite - that make for a really strong moral/philosophical/political debate and for that reason I'm in. I do think that with all things dystopian or with comic horror violence, there needs to be proper conversation with your vulnerable/impressionable viewers so they don't end up rocking back and forth drooling.

What do people mean by poorly dubbed?

Do you mean it wasn't a good translation or the dubbed actors' voices weren't good? Or something else?

I'm going to have to watch a bit of the dubbed one now to find out just how bad it is!

@werehamster the 'acting' is awful in the dubbing, just wooden and not professional level imo. It makes it hard to take the plot seriously for me personally (watched with someone who can't do subtitles so no choice but dubbed version). It sounds like a really low budget made for TV movie.

I've just watched some of the dubbed version - it's awful! Reminds me of Dogtanion in the 80s. That's a real shame - presumably they got it done as cheaply as possible before it became massively popular.

I've also watched the first one dubbed (after finishing the series in Korean), I can see why someone would be put off with the OTT dubbing, it's horrendous 😂

Kids at work play their version of this at lunchtimes and they are year 3-6 so 7 year olds and up. I still haven't seen it.

The dubbing has two issues... It does not match the subtitles (does not bother me as I find translations and different turns of phrase interesting). The acting voices feel am dram, hammy, stilted and plain wrong. No idea where they got the voice actors from or how much they were paid but they were all awful esp the VIPs. The old guy no 1 was the only decent one, the resting bitchy face woman was passable. Rest were a mockery.

If they did a remake though, no 1 should be played by Christopher Walken.

The VIPs were excruciating, the accents so wooden and awful. Ruined that bit for me.

Also Gi-Hun is a fucking awful father. Get on the plane FFS!!

Yeah to be fair to Sequins it actually says SPOILER in the title (and other posters gave away big plot points way before she did).

The 'spoiler alert' bit hasn't been on this thread title until today I don't think.

I've watched a few dubbed things on Netflix and it doesn't bother me so much with weird dubbing. I've also noticed that the dubbing often doesn't match the subtitles.

One of the best was Young Royals, where I think most of the original actor dubbed their own voices for the English version, so it felt quite natural but i guess most Swedish people speak good English.

I do watch things with subtitles, but it's hard to concentrate sometimes.

I'm horrified that people are so laid back about letting their children watch this.

Quite aside from the sex and the violence, there are difficult to navigate scenes from an emotional perspective.

It isn't made for young and impressionable brains, clearly.

Okay I'm giving it another shot and its much better with subtitles. Aside from the acting being utterly cringe, the English dub seems to miss a lot of the nuances that makes the characters interesting....I guess they have to fit it into the timing. Its still pretty predictable and doesn't really live up to the hype, but the original acting and script raises it from silly to pretty good imo.
