People just like different things, I also didn't like Black Mirror or Money Heist that everyone raved about. It was definitely not suitable for children but unless it got much worse it was nowhere near as bad as stuff like Saw and Hostel,

Teens always want to see stuff that isn't suitable though, my friends and I snuck into the cinema to see The Devils and Clockwork Orange when we were about 14, they were X film which were 18...

00100001 · 08/10/2021 22:57

So, you discussed the fact that a group of men raped a woman?

You discussed her thoughts about seeing corpses strung from the rafters as a warning to those who cheat at the games?

You had a nice long conversation about how people will betray others at the cost of each others lives in order to save themselves?

You've had interesting discussions about the harvesting and sale of organs?

You felt it appropriate for your 12 yo child to watch people being fired upon by snipers? And you discuss that?

You had a long conversation about the objectification of women?

You discussed the theme of power and corruption manifesting in a man demanding felatio from a subservient?

@Kerzel

This thread sums up everything that is wrong with my mumsnet. Sanctimonious, better than thou, perfect parents that have completely unrealistic expectations of what their teens actually up to.

You slate parents who have let their teens watch it all you like. You are kidding yourself. Your teens are watching this whether you ‘approve’ or not.

I asked my DD if she felt it was real, traumatic, etc - she laughed and gave me the ‘are you serious?’ look. We discussed the themes, character arcs etc and she 100% could discuss it analytically as a work of fiction.

The fact posters are criticising me as a teacher shows the ignorance certain parents actually have about what being a teen these days is like. If you think Squid Games is the epitome of negativity influence, god help you.

Bring on the the ‘neglect’ / ‘terrible teacher’ posts please and let me laugh at you ignorance.

Ah the old 'you're literally making me laugh' / 'thanks for the laugh' school of argument.

It's shitty to watch a show created for adults with a 12 year old.

I enjoyed it personally and felt it was really interesting and quite different. Visually I thought parts of it looked amazing.

I wouldn't watch it with a child though, because that would be irresponsible and ridiculous.

It's worrying you have a safeguarding role and do the whole shaming of / laughing at people who think it's wrong for a child to be exposed to shows like this. Doesn't your safeguarding training make you more informed on this kind of thing? Maybe time for a refresher course.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 08/10/2021 23:01

You discussed the theme of power and corruption manifesting in a man demanding fellatio from a subservient?

I'm curious as to how @Kerzel explained this to a 12 year old too.

00100001 · 08/10/2021 23:04

As a teacher you should know better about safeguarding @Kerzel

Imagine a Year 8 came up to you and told you her parents let her watch shoes with extreme violence, sex scenes, suicide, murder and rape in them.

You'd be fucking obliged to report that your safeguarding lead.

As here you are mocking us for daring to say that maybe a 12yo shouldn't be watching this fucked up TV show.

Just because you think it's fine to expose your daughter to such things, doesn't make it so.

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 08/10/2021 23:17

@WaterScarf

It's pretty violent, I loved it.

My DS 16 and DD 13 have decided not to watch it but if they did there's not much I could do to stop them tbh.

Erm....parental controls...?

The posters so desperate to be the 'cool parents' and let children watch stuff like this is depressing.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 08/10/2021 23:19

@WaterScarf

You can stop them watching it at your home on your Netflix account very easily...

DockOTheBay · 08/10/2021 23:20

I've watched Squid Game and I enjoyed it. Definitely peaked at episode 6, episode 7 was appalling (the VIP characters with terrible dialogue and wooden acting). It wasn't as gruesome as I was expecting, certainly not as bad as Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead.

However I do think the 15 rating is definitely warranted. I'm actually feeling quite ill at the thought that 6 year olds might be watching it and discussing at school. My daughter is 5 and I don't want her exposed to any part of this. She likes cuddly toys and playing shop, not shooting people.

This! Can't believe what I'm reading and I hope my daughter never ends up with a teacher like you @Kerzel
user6598 · 08/10/2021 23:26

I'm surprised that anyone of 5 or 6 would be remotely interested in watching it, usually all this sort of stuff starts when they get to secondary school, it did with DS anyway with unsuitable games and films

HBGKC · 08/10/2021 23:39

"You can stop them watching it at your home on your Netflix account very easily..."

@youvegottenminuteslynn how? (Genuine question).

grapewine · 08/10/2021 23:41

This thread is so disturbing.

The obvious answer is not to give them the password I guess!

Aside from that, there are lots of parental controls that are handy: help.netflix.com/en/node/264

I'm finding this so depressing

Silverswirl · 08/10/2021 23:55

@WaterScarf

Apart from chaining them up and locking them in the cellar *@00100001* no dear there's not much I can do to prevent any of that from happening.
In order to stop that sort of thing from happening dear, the work should have been put in from 2 years old on a DAILY basis. If they respect you and your boundaries and you have taken additional steps to safeguard them from drugs alcohol and porn, then no, locking them up is not required.

You do not speak for all teens although you seem to think you are the fountain of all knowledge on every teen in the country. Oh and 12 isn’t a teen so not sure why you keep referring to year 7’s as teens
WaterScarf · 09/10/2021 00:27

@Silverswirl

Many thanks for your unsolicited advice with regards to my parenting skills Hmm

I do love watching people on here jumping on the bandwagon when they haven't a clue what they're talking about and getting all twisted up with the excitement of digging in to people for no reason

Yes I can

But I can't stop them watching it elsewhere

what on earth are you on about ?

Read my reply to the PP

Do you even have teenagers, you know like popular ones who actually hang out with real friends

CorianderAndCream · 09/10/2021 00:49

No it gets worse, but it's dystopia style fiction. I really liked it, but it is of course painful

CorianderAndCream · 09/10/2021 00:50

@Flowersintheattic2021

Isit bad. Not seen it but my nearly 12 year old is watching it
Your 12 year older should not be watching it wtf
CorianderAndCream · 09/10/2021 00:52

@QuitMoaning much less gory than GOT except for one scene that shows brain. It's usually just shots to the head and a blood splash

bethabean · 09/10/2021 01:11

@WaterScarf

Wow, aren't you charming!
