You're all so weird anyone that's tagged me that is

EffOrf · 09/10/2021 05:21

It's like most 15 rated things, if your 13-14 year old watched it, so what but definitely not 10 years old.

Squeakycatflap · 09/10/2021 08:12

I let my son watch it and he’s not been sleeping so maybe it wasn’t such a good idea.

I’ve told him to grow up. He’s a manager at Argos ffs.

I think people are so desensitised to violence, they think this show is fine for kids.

The show starts off with the players being killed by an unknown entity, which is presumed to be a machine, to the players messing up individually, and it subtly shifts to players having to kill each other (eg the tug of war)...to players cheating/persuading/deceiving each other....to full on person on person murder.its gets more violent as it goes on, but it's under a charade of "playing games" which makes it more palatable in a weird way.

EffOrf · 09/10/2021 08:37

The acting was dreadful, the main character in particular, so manic.

ChippyDucks150 · 09/10/2021 08:46

The subtitled version was so much better, once I switched over.

The primary school I work in has so many 9 and 10 year olds talking about it, I am horrified. They were even drawing the characters the other day during a wet playtime.

Thesearmsofmine · 09/10/2021 09:30

I have seen some of it after hearing all the hype around it but it’s not my kind of thing. I should be shocked that people are letting their primary age dc watch it, but I’m not. I don’t want my dc desensitised to violent material, my eldest is nearly 11 and would find it very upsetting.

CiderJolly · 09/10/2021 10:04

I thought it had quite a ‘spoof’ feel to it. The dubbing was so over acted it didn’t feel real at all in the main. Therefore to me it wasn’t disturbing. I think secondary age children will have been exposed to worse already. Not suitable for primary aged. It would depend on the child as to whether I would consider letting them watch it.

In the 80s we watched all sorts, Rambo First Blood was a firm favourite. I don’t think watching violence leads to violence. It’s more complex than that. There is worse on the news every day. Unfortunately it’s a part of life and always has been.

On the plus side, it can open up discussions about socioeconomic divides, exploitation etc. It has some important themes, not just gratuitous violence. I also think it’s great that we get to watch programmes from other cultures for a change.

He's has ptsd and is an alcoholic Hmm.
EffOrf · 09/10/2021 10:15

It was almost comic book like, the bad acting, unreal locations

CiderJolly · 09/10/2021 10:21

I think the acting was good, it was the dubbing that was bad.

CiderJolly · 09/10/2021 10:22

But yeah definitely had a comic book feel.

EffOrf · 09/10/2021 10:22

It has been hyped up so much that DC have all been caught up in it, adults who wouldn't normally give this stuff time of day have all been caught up in this hype and are raving about a series that they then tell their DC they can't watch as it is so bad and horrible but they watched it.

TheGrumpyGoat · 09/10/2021 10:23

Do adults actually get caught up in ‘hype’? I’ve heard about the programme, doesn’t sound like my cup of tea so I haven’t bothered watching it!

TheGrumpyGoat · 09/10/2021 10:23

Then again I’ve also not seen GoT…

middleager · 09/10/2021 10:26

I find it disappointing and a bit dull. It's no 'Battle Royale'...

QuitMoaning · 09/10/2021 11:08

@CorianderAndCream Thank you. I watched GoT and coped with the gore in that for the most part but it was my limit as I am a wimp normally.
Maybe I shall try this out.

Hopeisallineed · 09/10/2021 11:34

@Kerzel it definitely sums up how rubbish people are at safeguarding their kids or monitoring what they see online. I have a 12 year old and a 14 year old. I know what they watch under my roof and on their phones. I 100% know they haven’t watched Squid Games under my watch. You can call it sanctimonious if f you wish but they are children and need protecting to a certain extent.

The acting was good. Dubbing wasn't.
Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 09/10/2021 11:40

I asked my DD if she felt it was real, traumatic, etc - she laughed and gave me the ‘are you serious?’ look. We discussed the themes, character arcs etc and she 100% could discuss it analytically as a work of fiction.

@Kerzel aren't you worried that your 12 year old daughter is already so desensitised to brutal physical and sexual violence?

I'm not actually sure I believe your posts tbh, especially about you being a teacher.

JourneyToHappiness · 09/10/2021 11:49

Squid games is on roblox, maybe that's how young kids know about it.

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 09/10/2021 11:51

@milkysmum

I have only watched episode 1, but as others have said my daughter ( nearly 13 ) has watched the whole thing and rated it. She watched it on Netflix on her tv in her room, and to be fair- all of her friends have also seen it as I have heard them all chatting about it.
Oh well if all the kids are watching it it must be ok eh? Wtaf? Parent your child. It's extremely violent. Quite boring in parts too.
MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 09/10/2021 11:52

GoT definitely worse IMO

Another reason why parents shouldn't be allowing their kids to play Roblox. It's not actually suitable for children at all.
bookworm14 · 09/10/2021 12:52

MN is so odd. On the one hand you have people who wrap their kids in cotton wool and won’t even let them go to the corner shop by themselves until they’re 18, and on the other hand you’ve got people like those on this thread who are happy for their young kids to watch extreme violence and sexual content.

If you are allowing your child/young teen to watch Squid Game you are negligent. Sorry.
