Names that are never coming back

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 18:13

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

I know a baby called Ian mind, I was a bit Hmm when I was told his name.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 23/09/2021 21:00

I know teenagers called Kevin, Gary, Stanley and Dave. Several pre-schoolers called Violet, a Percy, a Mabel and a Beryl.

Looking on names.darkgreener.com/ a lot of the names listed here are still given to a handful of babies each year. People like to name children after grandparents or great-grandparents and often people like a less common names so some of the older names like Edna, Phyllis, Beryl, Mavis etc will probably be in fashion in another 10 years or so just like Arthur and Florence are fashionable now. I think names like Keith, Gary, Sharon and Tracey won’t be popular again for some time but in another 50 years or so most of them are likely to come back.

I agree Gaylord is one that is unlikely to come back for some time though.

Just off the top of my head. I can't imagine a little girl with any of those names.

I know brothers Craig and Gary in their 20s.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 23/09/2021 21:03

My 10 year old is at school with a Mabel and a Bridie

CormoranStrike · 23/09/2021 21:04

I think Myra will never return.

I think Myra will never return.

I agree

Thatsplentyjack · 23/09/2021 21:06

Apparently the name Gary isn't coming back. I read somewhere that no one has called their baby Gary in years. I know about 5 Gary's 🤣 2 are cousins, but Apparently it's no longer popular.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 23/09/2021 21:07

I was surprised to find out that Bridie is not pronounced how I've always thought it was from the age of about 9/10 when I read all my mum's Catherine cookson books 🤣

new a family female friend named Dene in the 80's. She was around 70YO - never heard of it since

ladybrunton · 23/09/2021 21:17

I'm in my 50s. When I was young I was embarrassed that my dad was called Archie. I'd have laid money on no child ever being called that again.....

Look where we are now!

Onehotmess · 23/09/2021 21:17

I know 17 Ethelburgers. 4 of them are my own children.

How do you pronounce it??

I know a toddler Ian, an 8yo Colin. I know loads of Stanleys and Alberts.
I'm glad the name Dean is dying a death. I've always had a (probably irrational!) hatred of that name!

Gaylord

I agree about Myra

PaolaDiLorenzo · 23/09/2021 21:23

I knew my name would be mentioned and I only had to read two pages to see it.
It's a dreadful name and nobody should be saddled with it.

SarahBellam · 23/09/2021 21:24

You don't see many Sylvias or Cynthias. Shame. I love the name Sylvia. If I'd another daughter that's what I'd call her.

OverByYer · 23/09/2021 21:24

Lesley/ Leslie
