Names that are never coming back

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

I absolutely adore old names. I constantly on the look out for one that’s not yet been brought back.

I had DD (Mabel) in 2019.. hadn’t heard of one around here at all then all of a sudden 3 people I ‘know’ but not personally had Mabel’s!

They’re definitely coming back.. all of them will.

My list this time is
Doris
Mavis
Martha
Dorothy (Dottie)
Audrey
Penelope
Iris
Humphrey (can’t think of any other boy names I like.. hence why I’m here!.. on the hunt!)
@frazzledstar1 Duncan is a name I would consider as it's a family name and my gg(g?)father (Scottish)
Yes didn’t think of that actually, we live in the Home Counties so didn’t occur to me before - but could well be that he has Scottish heritage.

Dorothy will be popular due to escape to the chateau and Iris is Jude Law’s daughter - quite popular in London. I love Penelope (Penny) -lovely name.

@CallMeRisley

As a primary school teacher, that just out of the ones mentioned so far there are many Violets, a Kevin, a Mona and I know a toddler Vera. I have to say I don’t think there are any names that couldn’t potentially make a come back other than ones with very negative connotations such as Adolf (as mentioned by PP), Myra (Hindley).
There's a Maira in DS 10's class, but as her grandparents are immigrants, her parents probably aren't aware of the connotations.

My teen son’s middle name has been mentioned on this thread. He was going to be called it, but when he was born, didn’t look lupine that.

Heard a mother calling toddler Maggie on a beach last week.

I’m sure Vera was considered quite cool a few years back, possibly due to Vera Lynn connections.

gnushoes · 24/09/2021 21:26

FGS. They'll all be back. Maybe not in huge numbers and maybe not yet.

I know lots of little Violets, and one each of Cyril, Walter, Ethel and Millicent. If I were to have a baby boy right now, I would call him Ambrose.

@Finknottlesnewt

Aeneas

Poor man in our church choir.. but aged 60 in 1980 .. despite it being the name of a Greek Hero the pronunciation is so tricky .. it should never never be foisted upon another individual.

I have an XBF called Aeneas. Shortened to Neas by family, including me.
McHolsworthy · 24/09/2021 21:33

Lesley (for a man)

TartanJumper · 24/09/2021 21:36

I think Mildred etc will be back. They go in cycles.
The only ones I think will never be back in vogue are ones like Fanny that have changed meaning!
