Names that are never coming back

543 replies

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 18:13

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

@DaisyWaldron Ambrose is a gorgeous name!

Toddlerteaplease · 24/09/2021 22:34

@TheMildManneredMilitant bizarrely, we had two kids called Brian in at the same time at work a few weeks ago.

stormyweather274 · 24/09/2021 22:35

@Mariell

Nicola. Joanne. Sharon. Mark. Richard. Jeremy. Helen.

Those are some of my classmates names in the 70s that I don’t think I’ve seen being used in the last couple of decades.

There's a Mark, Nicola, Richard and Helen in my son's primary school.

@OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow

And my dd’s middle name is Margaret.
Likewise! The year she was born Margaret was the second most popular middle name for girls (after Rose). She was named after my Gran (born 1920).

(Plus you have all the diminutives/derivatives of Margaret including Meg and Daisy which I imagine are more popular)

Violinist64 · 24/09/2021 22:57

In one of the beginners’ piano books I teach from, published in the 1980s, there is a little piece with the words: “what is your name?/Gemma or Jane?…” l ask the children whether they have any children with these names in their classes. I tell them that there were lots of Janes when I was at school and their mothers agree that there were many Gemmas when they were at school (the mothers are now around 15-20 years younger than me). Almost all Gemmas seem to have been born in the eighties.

Violinist64 · 24/09/2021 22:59

I should have said that there are invariably no Gemmas or Janes in modern children’s classes.

DrNo007 · 24/09/2021 23:00

Myra. For obvious reasons.

As a teacher, I see lots of unusual names. One of my cousins called his son Cuthbert-he’s very Catholic. I think we were all pretty horrified at that, particularly as the local Catholic school is called the same.

Cherrysoup · 24/09/2021 23:38

@OuiOuiBonjour my mum’s name is on your list. She wanted me to call my first born after her if it was a girl. 🤮

WorkHardPlayHard1 · 24/09/2021 23:39

My sister has just named her kid Winnie! All i can think of is Winnie the Witch or Winnie the Pooh. Oh lord!! 🤪

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/09/2021 23:45

Eunice! Pam Ayres mentioned on the Cotswolds programme tonight that she used to have a sheep called Eunice.

And Lettice - other ancient MNers may remember Lettice Leefe, ‘the lovable duffer’, in the old SchoolFriend comic.

OuiOuiBonjour · 24/09/2021 23:49

Do you know what, Lettice comes up surprisingly regularly in the Telegraph birth announcements! I actually quite like Cuthbert and that's come up in the past couple of years in the Telegraph too. There's quite alot of wealthier Catholics who use the Telegraph Birth Announcements.

I have a relative's name on my list who I think would have liked me to name a child after her, if I'd had one.
