Names that are never coming back

543 replies

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 18:13

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

There are absolutely loads of Elsies around — I had two in my 2012 NCT group!
linsey2581 · 24/09/2021 18:40

I’m 40 and I’ve only met a handful of Linsey’s and I think only 1 that spells it the same way as me.

Lots of Elsies, Bessies, Bettys and Margarets (Maggies) amongst my peers children (30s). It's usually the "Hipsters" and arty sorts. I know a Doris and Dolly too.

Louise, Sarah, Charlotte etc never really went away - the last two are Classics.

I know child Ediths, Sallys, Violets, one Sylvia, a Barbara and a Brenda!

Granny Chic is in!

dreamygirl25 · 24/09/2021 18:43

Can't imagine Myra or Ian coming back into favour..

LadyCarolineDester · 24/09/2021 18:44

@Libraryghost

Sharon, Tracey, Nicola, Dawn, Christine, Carol and Susan.
I know a baby Susan.
oneglassandpuzzled · 24/09/2021 18:44

@MintJulia

My elderly aunts were called Violet, Mona and Gertrude.

I'm not sure any of their names will, be back in a hurry

I know a 23-year old Violet. And there's a Mona in Pretty Little Liars on TV.
GuidoTheKillerPimp · 24/09/2021 18:45

I don’t think there’s been a single baby named Gary since 1992 or something. So it’s effectively been out of favour for 30 years. I think Barry will die a death too.

I know someone who recently named their child Gary, so not extinct yet. He was also named Gary.

Tabbypawpaw · 24/09/2021 18:45

Has anyone mentioned Winifred?

LukeEvansWife · 24/09/2021 18:46

Phillip
That's not old enough for a comeback. I am 50 and knew at least four Philips at school
OhWhyNot · 24/09/2021 18:48

Trevor

On a few American dramas there are young boys called Trevor maybe has come back there

RootinandTootin · 24/09/2021 18:48

Ian, Gary, Nigel, Craig, Paul and Sharon, Karen, Andrea, Doreen, Kelly

LaBellina · 24/09/2021 18:49

Wendy
Cindy
Barbie

Basically a lot of 1980s names haven’t made a comeback so far.

LaBellina · 24/09/2021 18:49

I also can’t see Karen return any time soon…sad because although I wouldn’t pick it for a DD it’s a lovely name.

LukeEvansWife · 24/09/2021 18:50

They seem to cycle around 100 years. So 80s names won't be back for ages

DagenhamRoundhouse · 24/09/2021 18:50

Doreen
Pauline

Maybe my great great granddaughter will be named Cindy then and I can say in my crackling voice “When great great grandmother was young, she had an older cousin named Cindy, she was born in 1982”

And the great grandchildren will nod and say yes that was a century ago, vintage names are in fashion again!

PissedOffAgain · 24/09/2021 18:57

@PhiRhoSigma

Candida
Isn't that known for making a comeback?!
