Names that are never coming back

Beancounter1 · 23/09/2021 18:13

Names that been in common use since about 1850 (so nothing from ancient history like Ethelberger or whatever), that are well and truly dead, as in no babies are likely to be called this now.

How about:
Mildred ?
Edna ?
Mortimer ?

Can you think of any others?

Ebenezer

My little girl is obsessed with the name Gary! Every cuddly toy, doll etc is named it!

RobynNora · 24/09/2021 19:00

I’d be surprised if Edna wasn’t making a comeback. Two syllabled girls names ending in A are all the rage. Ava, Ada, Ida etc

Ewart
Brenda
Wendy
Geraldine
Jason

Biblical names like Deborah will always hover in the wings, maybe the ‘made up’ names of their day less so: Tina, Tracy etc.

Bogeyes · 24/09/2021 19:07

Myra

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/09/2021 19:07

Linda and Christine were very common in my era - you don’t hear of those at all any more, or at least I haven’t. I dare say it’ll take a couple more decades for the cycle to repeat.

I’ve often been grateful to my folks for a classic name that doesn’t date.

Nigel, Trevor, Percy, Gertrude, Phylis, Margaret, I don’t see these making a come back. Also names from my generation, Tracey, Lisa, Susan, Sharon, Gillian, Michelle, Paul and Brian. I’m a teacher and haven’t seen these in my 20 years teaching. But I have been surprised on occasion. I had a Jemima about 10 years ago, and I currently have an Beatrice and Arthur. So I may be wrong.

Pendore · 24/09/2021 19:15

Nigel. Doubt that will make a comeback anytime soon.

LaBellina · 24/09/2021 19:16

I also don’t see Gaylord making a comeback.
Surprisingly it also wasn’t on my list of potential boys names when I was pregnant.

unsure111 · 24/09/2021 19:18

@MintJulia

My elderly aunts were called Violet, Mona and Gertrude.

I'm not sure any of their names will, be back in a hurry

I know someone who called their child Margaret Gertrude, not so long ago 🙃

For those who are considering the name Gaylord; appearently some find it controversial

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 24/09/2021 19:20

Probably the Puritan names like-
Dancell-Dallphebo-Mark-Anthony-Gallery-Cesar. Son of Dancell-Dallphebo-Mark-Anthony-Gallery-Cesar, born 1676.
Praise-God. Full name, Praise-God Barebone. The Barebones were a rich source of crazy names. This one was a leather-worker, member of a particularly odd Puritan group and an MP. He gave his name to the Barebones Parliament, which ruled Britain in 1653.
If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned. Praise-God’s son, he made a name for himself as an economist. But, for some inexplicable reason, he decided to go by the name Nicolas Barbon.
Fear-God. Also a Barebone.
Job-raked-out-of-the-ashes
Has-descendents
Wrestling
Fight-the-good-fight-of-faith
Fly-fornication
Jesus-Christ-came-into-the-world- to-save. Brother of “Damned Barebone”. I can only imagine this name shortened to “Save.”
Thanks
What-God-will
Joy-in-sorrow. A name attached to many stories of difficult births.
Remember
Fear-not. His/her surname was “Helly”, born 1589.
Experience
Anger
Abuse-not
Die-Well. A brother of Farewell Sykes, who died in 1865. We can assume they had rather pessimistic parents.
Continent. Continent Walker was born in 1594 in Sussex.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 24/09/2021 19:21

I don't mind Margaret. When I was pregnant, Maggie was on the list if I'd had a daughter. I also quite like Winnie

BrassyLocks · 24/09/2021 19:39

Barry, Roger and Gretchen.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/09/2021 19:40

Gretchen is lovely. I’ve taught quite a few.

disconnected101 · 24/09/2021 19:45

I doubt Kevin will come back but you never know.
Funny how popular - and lovely I may be biased the Irish equivalent Caomhin (pronounced keeveen) is
