Is there a current thread?
Who's watching?

That was phenomenal. Not only delighted that Emma won obviously but such a great game of tennis to watch. Really spectacular

Justgivemewine · 12/09/2021 01:17

I’m not a tennis fan and never watch it but I’m still loving this news.

I think Martina Navratilova was a waste of time I couldn't tell what she was saying. Pain in the neck. And, I would like to have known what Fernandez was saying whilst Emma was having her knee checked. She looked quite petulant at times.
Really? I understood MN just fine. She's an out and out legend, both on the court and off, I love seeing her.

What was Fernandez saying during the medical break? Did she think Emma was faking the injury? We could see blood running down her leg fgs. I’m really curious as to what exactly she was objecting to. I didn’t warm to her at all. The 9/11 stuff was so contrived. Neither player was even born at the time. It doesn’t mean anything to them, outside of history books. Emma came across as much more natural, fresh yet incredible composed.

TedImgoingmad · 12/09/2021 01:32

I imagine Fernandez had wanted to finish that game before Emma had the injury break. She had the advantage, having clawed it back when Emma lost the match point. She perhaps thought the momentum would allow her to win the game, and psych out Emma to hopefully even up and maybe win the set. As it was, she did win the game, but I think she ended up psyching herself out of the match with that self inflicted, emotional discombobulation.

Wow, how offensive. English isn’t my first language and I don’t have any difficulties understanding Navratilova. She’s a legend, and totally deserving of her platform as a commentator. May she be a pain in your neck for years to come.

I’m really puzzled that you find Fernandez was “quite petulant at times”. What times were these, other than when her momentum was broken in the second set? I don’t think she was petulant at all, she was clearly upset at the game interruption, which is entirely natural.

I don't think she did win it. The injury break occurred in Emma's final service game when she was on break point.
TedImgoingmad · 12/09/2021 01:45

Yes you're right, she didn't, she won another break point not the game, thanks for correcting me BentBastard. But the momentum had been with Fernandez before the injury time out, and I guess that's why she was raging about it happening right at that moment.

BentBastard · 12/09/2021 01:49

I get she was frustrated but not only was Raducanu entitled to received immediate attention? It is mandated in the rules that immediate medical attention is given.

Neither player or team had any say in the matter, including Raducanu.

ElizabethTudor · 12/09/2021 02:12

I thought Martina’s commentary was just fine, as always.

NiceGerbil · 12/09/2021 03:00

Martina is a legend. No criticism at all here.

I looked up the comments from McEnroe and Morgan and they didn't seem horrendous to me tbh.

SpidersAreShitheads · 12/09/2021 03:56

What a wonderful, wonderful match. I watched both semifinals too and it’s clear that both of these girls have an incredible mental toughness.

Having said that, I agree with PP that Fernandez let herself down with the petulant complaining. She was still complaining after the match finished. The rules state that if there’s blood, play stops and it must be treated. The timing of it was stinking bad luck for Fernandez- but I don’t know what she expected them to do about it? Emma had blood running down her leg. Also if you look at Emma on the podium AFTER the match you can see where the blood has soaked through the dressing so it was obviously a pretty nasty cut.

I totally understand being very frustrated at the timing but shit happens sometimes. Raducanu went straight back on court as soon as she was treated, she didn’t faff or hang around. Fernandez showing a flash of her age there I think, bit of a stroppy teen just for a moment.

I wasn’t keen on Fernandez’s speech either - I thought it was contrived. But that could just be a cultural thing.

I’m sure we’re going to see a lot more of both girls. Brilliant talent and Emma particularly is a fantastic role model.

vastgrandupgrade · 12/09/2021 04:31

Emma 1/8
Tom Daley 29\2
Katrina Johnson-Thompson (?) 28/1
Sarah Storey 50/1
Adam Peaty 69/1
Joe Root 100\1
Lewis Hamilton 119\1

These odds are a bit strange. Why is Katarina Johnson-Thompson there? She’s awesome but hasn’t done anything this year. And both Kennys are missing.

It’s going to be a hard one. Emma’s achievement is remarkable, but it’s an Olympic year and she’s up against people that have broken records for sustained high-level performance over many years. Tbh I don’t know how you rank her achievements compared with Adam Peaty, Jason Kenny and Sarah Storey. It’s a bit like comparing apples with pears.

vastgrandupgrade · 12/09/2021 04:37

And also, Mark Cavendish. If he gets nominated that’s probably where my vote will go.

Bunnycat101 · 12/09/2021 05:55

I think Fernandez may live to regret the footage of her strop over the medical treatment. I’m sure she said something in her speech about getting the ‘right trophy’ which just sounded a bit petulant. As much as it stopped flow, Emma was probably hurting and had to go back out there at a crucial point. It would have sounded better if she’d just cracked on or checked if she was ok. Another poster said the same but during the prize giving you could see she was bleeding through the bandage so she clearly couldn’t have just kept on going without. It was a bit of a contrast to Wimbledon where Tomljanovic seemed genuinely worried for her.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 12/09/2021 06:22

@Sakura7

I remember McEnroe also speculating that she wouldn't make it into the US Open draw.

She well and truly showed him!

I remember that! Annabel Croft was speculating whether the US Open would give her a wild card and he was VERY dismissive Hmm

In your face McEnroe Grin

RiverSkater · 12/09/2021 06:35

I watch very little sport and do not understand Tennis at all so we watched the end as history in the making and to show the DDs amazing female role models.

I did think Emma didn't get as much applause from the crowd as she deserved, she not only won, she broke records. Did anybody else notice that?

Then so much of the crowd left even before she got presented the trophy!

Knittingupastorm · 12/09/2021 07:00

I suppose Jason Kenny will be a possible, though maybe they could do a Kenny double ( personally I think Laura should qualify in her own right, all those medals and having a baby!) . Sarah Storey should be in with a shout as well. It would be great if Emma did win, she will be nominated of course, but I still feel it will go to some man because it blumming always does.

Jason Kenny did become Britain’s most decorated Olympian, with the most golds and most total medals. So if he won I don’t think that would be wrong, it is a massive achievement.
I’d prefer Emma though!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/09/2021 07:16

she was clearly upset at the game interruption, which is entirely natural what did she think was going to happen when Emma had blood running down her leg- she threw her toys out the pram and destroyed her own mojo

WhatNaYes · 12/09/2021 07:47

Incredible, so inspiring. I must admit watching her interview brought a tear to my eye. Go Emma!

We spoke for too long as well. Really not a very sporting attitude!

How weird. I had no problem whatsoever with understanding Navratilova, and thought her commentary was very good.

On another tack, I wonder how many 18 year olds are being kicked out of bed this morning and told that If ER can earn over a million quid they can get off their backsides and get a job.

FizzyDibdab · 12/09/2021 08:20

Martin's commentary was very clear and concise from the little I heard because dd refused to sleep without me so missed most of the match

Ozymanduskimg's comment about Martina is a bit off given that Martina is Czech and obviously not English.

derxa · 12/09/2021 08:26

I don't understand people making derogatory comments about Martina and John McEnroe. Bloody legends! Lovely to see dear Virginia Wade in the crowd and wonderful Billie Jean King presenting the trophy.
