Is there a current thread?
Who's watching?

OP posts:
Billlius · 12/09/2021 00:30

Will someone have to explain to her what a cheque is?

BoreOfWhabylon · 12/09/2021 00:30

That was fantastic and I'm not usually into tennis!

And how refreshing to have a role model who is not a botoxed, pouting 'influencer' or vapid reality star.

BookShark · 12/09/2021 00:31

I'm guilty of waking DD up to watch the final points - possibly after rewinding it so I knew it was "safe". Well done Emma, that's amazing.

Dina Asher-Smith went to Newstead Wood as well. Starting to feel that me representing the school at hockey was maybe not the pinnacle of their sporting achievements...

I do feel for her parents who weren't able to be there. I can't imagine how that feels.

@littlbrowndog

10 matches. Didn’t drop a set 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Didn’t even get taken to a tie break!
LimitIsUp · 12/09/2021 00:35

"Won’t get her sports personality of the year though. There will be some golfer/ football player / racing driver/ snooker player with a penis (and no personality) standing in line."

You've had two posters belittle you fir this statement but actually you are completely on the money. So few women have won this accolade whereas:

Five people have won the award more than once: tennis player Andy Murray is the only person to have won three times (in addition to the Young Sports Personality and Team awards), while boxer Henry Cooper and Formula One drivers Nigel Mansell, Lewis Hamilton and Damon Hill have each won twice.

BoreOfWhabylon · 12/09/2021 00:36

Re SPOTY
Emma has made history, no one else has ever done what she managed to do. Will be a travesty if she doesn't get it.

LimitIsUp · 12/09/2021 00:38

Sports personality of the year is decided by public vote. If you want Emma to win (and it would be richly deserved) then make sure you all vote

viques · 12/09/2021 00:39

@Billlius “Will someone have to explain to her what a cheque is”

Grin

That’s why she was happy to hand it to someone to look after. She is probably sitting with her phone in her hand waiting for the bank transfer to come through!

Susannahmoody · 12/09/2021 00:39

Bravo Emma

Weird odds Jason and Laura Kenny not referenced?

@viques

Won’t get her sports personality of the year though. There will be some golfer/ football player / racing driver/ snooker player with a penis (and no personality) standing in line.

I think there's every chance she will get it.

And you bring golf, football and snooker into it, but it's been awarded to tennis players more times than it has to any one in those sports.

TheHouseILiveIn · 12/09/2021 00:45

@Motherdare

I’ve never watched the US Open live like that before. It’s so different from Wimbledon, all the music and razzmatazz. The bouncers boofing everybody out of the way! The overt commercialisation.
Same here! I found it particularly amusing when they talked about the prize money and then some woman from JP Morgan came tottering out in her designer heels and literally handed her the cheque: "here you go, Emma, guess how much? £$2.5M!" So commercial and cringe. Loved it!Grin

And that female bouncer was really on a mission, wasn't she? Grin

olidora63 · 12/09/2021 00:45

@YourFinestPantaloons

I've just checked and the last time we had a female Sport Personality of the Year was 15 years ago.

Sadly I don't think the amazing Emma winning will change that

Well if she is nominated hopefully people will vote for her !

Exactly!
TedImgoingmad · 12/09/2021 00:49

Not sure about SPOTY.
We had the euros final (seems like absolutely forever ago now - Marcus Rashford has surely got to be in with a shout?) And the Olympics and Paralympics...and normal football and motor racing.

SPOTY is voted on by the public, so everyone needs to flood the phone lines and vote for Emma. Last time a woman won was, I think, Kelly Holmes, for her double Olympic gold in 2004. Another female winner is long overdue.

Marcus Rashford barely got a game in the Euros, and he missed his penalty in the final. He's been an absolute star over Covid, but he will not be nominated (never mind win).

PP mentioned the England squad getting team of the year. Although they probably will, I'm not so sure they should. Depending on how they define "team" the mixed sex triathlon and mixed medley swimming teams each won absolutely thrilling gold medals at the Olympics and marked their places in the history books. I'd really love one of those squads to win.

Emma was brilliant this evening, and so was Leylah for that matter. I think the smiling was a bit odd, but I think she was smiling at her family and keeping her spirits up, rather than smirking (I'm trying to be charitable as she's just a kid ). The tantrum was a mark of immaturity. She clearly felt she may have out-psyched Emma at match point, and could possibly claw back the game and the set. Then the injury break meant she lost the momentum and gave Emma time to gather herself. Not Emma's fault at all. Having said that, I'd actually have loved it to have gone to 3 sets as the tennis was so good - as long as Emma was going to win of course! And amen to no shrieking and grunting!

Yeah, so nice to see no fake boobs, lips or bum. No veneers. When they interviewed the kids at her old primary school they were all so proud of her and talked of her inspiring them to want to do the same (this was before she won). Now THIS is a role model
Unfashionable · 12/09/2021 00:53

Jason and Laura Kenny not referenced?

Both 99/1. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bellagio40 · 12/09/2021 01:02

What a brilliant match. Emma is incredible. Loved the story she told tonight about losing her AirPods in the changing room 5 minutes before her first qualifier match was due to start. She was running around the changing room trying to find them and thought to herself, if I win this match I’ll be able to afford a new pair

BentBastard · 12/09/2021 01:04

Excellent match. Both played brilliantly but Emma just edged it when it counted. That's what a winner does. Score line doesn't do Fernandez justice but no one ever remembers the score line.

The time out tantrum was a shame but it showed she was rattled (and was the only real sign of her being rattled as she was doing a great job of not appearing rattled before that).

Her tribute to NYC after 9/11 felt a bit Contrived and sycophantic but that was probably prepared in advance for her to say.

My observation from following the US Open threads on Twitter are that considering US likes to think of itself as the land where dreams are made, a lot of them seem weirdly out out by a qualifier winning "their" tournament. Americans don't love an undergoes he way us Brits do.

BentBastard · 12/09/2021 01:05

BentBastard · 12/09/2021 01:06

ozymandiusking · 12/09/2021 01:08

I think Martina Navratilova was a waste of time I couldn't tell what she was saying. Pain in the neck.
And, I would like to have known what Fernandez was saying whilst Emma was having her knee checked.She looked quite petulant at times.

caringcarer · 12/09/2021 01:09

Emma is unbelievably talented. So nice to watch a ladies tennis match without the awful grunting. I think we will see a lot more from these two still both in their teens.
