Is there a current thread?
Who's watching?

She won’t even be able to drink at the after party 😂

tunnocksreturns2019 · 11/09/2021 23:54

Incredible match. Absolutely loved it. First qualifier EVER to win a grand slam, and not a single set dropped. Will she get a Guinness World Record for that?

The cheque moment was so crass! Would never happen at Wimbledon. I clutched my pearls Grin

How she fitted in A Levels let alone getting A* Maths and A in Economics leaves me even more speechless.

Yay for excellent tennis and a fabulous future.

But seriously, what a star, what a match. So incredibly pleased for Emma.

I remember McEnroe also speculating that she wouldn't make it into the US Open draw.

She well and truly showed him!

Antsinyourpanta · 11/09/2021 23:54

Not sure about SPOTY.
We had the euros final (seems like absolutely forever ago now - Marcus Rashford has surely got to be in with a shout?) And the Olympics and Paralympics...and normal football and motor racing.

pecanmix · 11/09/2021 23:56

I bet she has such a good sleep tonight.

whynotwhatknot · 11/09/2021 23:56

I followed her at Wimbledon and knew she was special so very pleased for her

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 11/09/2021 23:56

England will get team of the year I imagine, Emma a shoe-in for overall personality

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 11/09/2021 23:56

I can't believe she's done it. It's so surreal. I do wonder if the home crowd at Wimbledon was too much.
Knocks my job at a supermarket after my A levels into a cocked hat Grin

Dasher789 · 11/09/2021 23:57

Absolutely fantastic!Grin

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 11/09/2021 23:57

@pecanmix

I bet she has such a good sleep tonight.
Well she’s too young to go out and celebrate in NYC so may not have much choice Grin
BreadInCaptivity · 11/09/2021 23:58

An incredible achievement by both women to be in a grand slam final as a teen.

It was a great match to watch and I think in light of their ages they both spoke afterward with maturity beyond their years.

It must have been as big a thrill for ER as a disappointment for LF and for the latter harder still to lose in front of a North American crowd when you were seeded more highly and probably expected to win.

I hope both of them have the right support around them at this time Thanks

Farfalle88 · 11/09/2021 23:58

@Antsinyourpanta

We just said it's slightly weird to disclose the winners cheque!Confused That doesnt happen at wimbledon!🤣
I thought it was a bit crass.
Fiftyplanner · 11/09/2021 23:58

For the first time I can remember, I don’t even know who is in the men’s final as the focus has been on Emma. Amazing that these young women have played so well and inspired so many. What a match!!

BringMeTea · 11/09/2021 23:59

WOW wow wow wow wow! Amazing. Great match. Incredible win for Emma. Well deserved.

Unfashionable · 12/09/2021 00:02

Won’t get her sports personality of the year though. There will be some golfer/ football player / racing driver/ snooker player with a penis (and no personality) standing in line.

I definitely wouldn’t bet on that, if I were you...

JacquelineCarlyle · 12/09/2021 00:03

Phenomenal! She's amazing! Seeing needs to win SPOTY!

pecanmix · 12/09/2021 00:03

@GingerAndTheBiscuits true! Room service and a lay in sound like way more fun to me Grin

ToomuchHeat · 12/09/2021 00:03

Ace!

Sakura7 · 12/09/2021 00:04

I thought it was a bit crass.

It is crass, but they've always done it at the US Open. It's a cultural difference, the financial aspect of it is considered a big deal in America.

It's quite funny when someone like Nadal or Djokovic wins and they're making a fuss about handing over a sum that is basically pocket change to them.

Bunnycat101 · 12/09/2021 00:04

The winners check bit was so odd. Especially as someone pretty much took the envelope straight off her. If they were going to do it (and be Cras) it would be better to be like sorry you’re the runner up but here’s your million dollar consolation prize.

blameitonthecaffeine · 12/09/2021 00:04

This is probably a silly question but I've never really followed SPOTY. Is it supposed to be the highest achieving sports person who gets it or is it more about being a big personality, entertaining your fans etc? Or both?

There were some incredible Olympians in both achievement and personality. I didn't get to see any Paralympics but probably there too.

AdoptedBumpkin · 12/09/2021 00:04

I only saw the last couple of games but she seems such a great down to earth girl, and an excellent player obviously.

Motherdare · 12/09/2021 00:04

Incredible match. Loved watching them. Fernandez let herself down during the medical break. The cheque was unbelievably crass. Two amazing, inspiring young women.

Motherdare · 12/09/2021 00:06

I’ve never watched the US Open live like that before. It’s so different from Wimbledon, all the music and razzmatazz. The bouncers boofing everybody out of the way! The overt commercialisation.
