Is there a current thread?
Who's watching?

OP posts:

@RiverSkater

I watch very little sport and do not understand Tennis at all so we watched the end as history in the making and to show the DDs amazing female role models.

I did think Emma didn't get as much applause from the crowd as she deserved, she not only won, she broke records. Did anybody else notice that?

Then so much of the crowd left even before she got presented the trophy!

I did but sometimes that's just down to location. There were a lot of Canadians there for Leylah. Harder I expect for Brits to travel to the US under current restrictions. Whilst Canada isn't the US they are both North America so it was closer to 'home turf' than it was for Emma.
MarshaBradyo · 12/09/2021 08:28

I’d prefer someone of their calibre present

I also wondered what Fernandez was saying at medical break, it was a lot

Maireas · 12/09/2021 08:29

Fernandez referencing 9/11 went down well with the crowd. Amazing to think that happened before both women were born.
I thought it was strange that the stadium mostly cleared before the trophy ceremony, though.

I like that the Queen sent a message

It would be good to see Emma R win at Wimbledon, with the crowd behind her

I’m still so impressed by her calm playing

She seemed very churned up about it, maybe thought Raducanu was chancing it a bit? She obviously didn't see the blood. Which was still seeping through during the ceremony.
Antsinyourpanta · 12/09/2021 08:30

My observation from following the US Open threads on Twitter are that considering US likes to think of itself as the land where dreams are made, a lot of them seem weirdly out out by a qualifier winning "their" tournament. Americans don't love an undergoes he way us Brits do.

I was surprised that there wasnt more equal support from the crowd considering neither was American and both were fairly surprise candidates for the final (I suppose Canadian is nearer to American and maybe had more fans there) Although DH likes golf and he said once when Europe snatched victory in the Ryder cup when America had been ahead, nearly all the spectators just left and didn't wait for the presentation.Confused

I dont know if Ferñandez will regret the outburst, or the speech. She definitely had momentum at the stage where Emma had medical intervention, and might well have taken the game or the set (and potentially the match) it's kind of understandable - she is very young and also hasnt been in that situation before.

And I loved Martinas commentary.

Maireas · 12/09/2021 08:32

It was lovely to see how excited Virginia and Tim were!

OnlyTheLangOfTheTitberg · 12/09/2021 08:39

@derxa

I don't understand people making derogatory comments about Martina and John McEnroe. Bloody legends! Lovely to see dear Virginia Wade in the crowd and wonderful Billie Jean King presenting the trophy.
I can’t understand the comments about Martina either, but after Wimbledon John McEnroe was quite dismissive of Emma’s chances of even getting into the US Open this year, so I think that’s what people are referring to there.
EsmaCannonball · 12/09/2021 09:18

I never understand those tennis players who think the best use of a timeout is to shout at an official and have a tantrum. I understand the frustration but it almost always works against their playing.

As for the coverage, I wasn't keen on the main presenter and I prefer the camerawork and graphics at Wimbledon. I also prefer the Wimbledon crowd, not because they are more partisan to the British but because they seem more into the actual tennis and the whole event.

However, I thought the commentary on Amazon Prime and the overall presenting and reporting team were much better, even though most of them were the very same ex-players that you get at Wimbledon. How delicious was it not to be subjected to bloody John Inverdale and effing Andrew Castle? I don't understand why the BBC is so wedded to the idea of Andrew Castle commentating on every important match when the viewers clearly don't like it. That dreary voice makes my heart sink.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/09/2021 09:20

Both girls played phenomenally. Fernandez was so good, they were absolute equals - except that Radanacu beat her - and she beat her so well. Has not lost a set in all 10 games - remarkable. and although Fernandez was upset she recovered to say a big speech.
nice that the Queen posted, for both girls, as inspiring, Canada being part of the Commonwealth.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/09/2021 09:22

Radanacu was at Wimbledon but it was so so hyped up

mum2jakie · 12/09/2021 09:46

She was fantastic. The match was gripping through and through!

MsHedgehog · 12/09/2021 09:46

So so pleased to see women’s tennis at the forefront, and I hope both Raducanu and Fernandez go on to become the biggest names for many years to come.

It may well be a cultural thing as the US Open is so flashy compared to other events, but Fernandez’s smirking was embarrassing to watch. Judging by her family’s reactions and their faces when she lost, they aren’t the best role models for Fernandez for sportsmanship and I hope she learns how not to behave when in future tournaments. Equally, these women are only 19 and 18, barely women and still teenagers...I wish I had their ability, poise and intellect when I was their age!

ladybrunton · 12/09/2021 09:52

Her tennis club is 5 mins from my house. I'm absolutely chuffed to bits for her. A local hero.

mydogisthebest · 12/09/2021 09:52

@caringcarer

Emma is unbelievably talented. So nice to watch a ladies tennis match without the awful grunting. I think we will see a lot more from these two still both in their teens.
Could not agree more. I hardly ever bother watching womens' tennis because I can't stand the grunting and screaming. These two women showed that great entertaining tennis with good rallies can be played without having to make all that noise
RedRum27 · 12/09/2021 09:57

Great Saturday evening. Fantastic match, really tense, both girls were superb as young women so the future of tennis is looking exciting. Chuffed to bits for Emma!!! Congratulations it was a fully deserved win and love all the record breaking 😁 I imagine she has inspired lots of people to try tennis.

CovidCorvid · 12/09/2021 10:04

What are peoples thoughts about how Emma compares to the William sisters at the height of their game? I don't know enough about tennis to know and am just curious if she could be parachuted back in time 10 years would venus/Serena wiped the floor with her or would she have had a chance?

JudgeJ · 12/09/2021 10:50

@TedImgoingmad

Not sure about SPOTY. We had the euros final (seems like absolutely forever ago now - Marcus Rashford has surely got to be in with a shout?) And the Olympics and Paralympics...and normal football and motor racing.

SPOTY is voted on by the public, so everyone needs to flood the phone lines and vote for Emma. Last time a woman won was, I think, Kelly Holmes, for her double Olympic gold in 2004. Another female winner is long overdue.

Marcus Rashford barely got a game in the Euros, and he missed his penalty in the final. He's been an absolute star over Covid, but he will not be nominated (never mind win).

PP mentioned the England squad getting team of the year. Although they probably will, I'm not so sure they should. Depending on how they define "team" the mixed sex triathlon and mixed medley swimming teams each won absolutely thrilling gold medals at the Olympics and marked their places in the history books. I'd really love one of those squads to win.

Emma was brilliant this evening, and so was Leylah for that matter. I think the smiling was a bit odd, but I think she was smiling at her family and keeping her spirits up, rather than smirking (I'm trying to be charitable as she's just a kid ). The tantrum was a mark of immaturity. She clearly felt she may have out-psyched Emma at match point, and could possibly claw back the game and the set. Then the injury break meant she lost the momentum and gave Emma time to gather herself. Not Emma's fault at all. Having said that, I'd actually have loved it to have gone to 3 sets as the tennis was so good - as long as Emma was going to win of course! And amen to no shrieking and grunting!

Zara Philips, 2006, but she had an advantage over everyone else!

I wonder if she stayed up late to watch it or did she watch the Last Night of the Proms??
Farfalle88 · 12/09/2021 11:05

The message went out VERY quickly, which suggests she had it written for her by a lackey, and went to bed early!

To be fair the Queen is a tennis fan as are many other royals. Kate certainly is. It’s a posh sport after all, a sport of kings! So I wouldn’t be surprised if she did stay up to watch.

If Emma at the moment played Serena at her peak on any surface, or peak Venus on grass, she would be obliterated. The standard at the top of women’s tennis has dropped significantly in recent years which is why the game is now so open that two unseeded teenagers can get to the US Open final.

BUT Emma has limitless potential and no obvious weaknesses in her game, either in attack or defence. Maybe she could gain a bit more speed on her first serve and work on her volleys to become an all-court player but her movement is outstanding and she has an incredibly strong temperament. I fully expect her to develop and improve over the next few years.

SirChenjins · 12/09/2021 12:00

I much preferred watching the game last night to eg the Williams sisters whose games just seemed fine involve hitting the ball as hard and as fast as possible at their opponents. Last night’s game seemed far more about skill and creativity than power - and YY to the lack of grunting and screaming. Hopefully that’s the start of a change across all tennis matches - there’s no need for it.

prh47bridge · 12/09/2021 12:07

@ozymandiusking

I think Martina Navratilova was a waste of time I couldn't tell what she was saying. Pain in the neck. And, I would like to have known what Fernandez was saying whilst Emma was having her knee checked.She looked quite petulant at times.
I understood exactly what she was saying. Mostly it was interesting and useful. I was, however, annoyed at her getting the facts wrong. Contrary to what she said, Radacanu had been down a break before in this tournament (at least twice) and had been at 3-3 in the first set before.
Lalliella · 12/09/2021 13:00

@Bunnycat101

I think Fernandez may live to regret the footage of her strop over the medical treatment. I’m sure she said something in her speech about getting the ‘right trophy’ which just sounded a bit petulant. As much as it stopped flow, Emma was probably hurting and had to go back out there at a crucial point. It would have sounded better if she’d just cracked on or checked if she was ok. Another poster said the same but during the prize giving you could see she was bleeding through the bandage so she clearly couldn’t have just kept on going without. It was a bit of a contrast to Wimbledon where Tomljanovic seemed genuinely worried for her.
She wasn’t petulant about the trophy! It was a jokey comment because she had said she wanted to come back and win the trophy, and realised she had won a trophy! I think you’ve been a bit mean about her there.
