"That Griggio stuff"

DuchessOfDisaster · 02/09/2021 14:06

One of my friends always preferred rose wine, semi-sweet or sweeter wines. I forgot that and one day when I went over for supper took a bottle of Pinot Grigio. She liked it and started to buy it for herself.

Now, she refers to it as "that Griggio stuff" (pronounced with a hard g!) It's embarrassingly amusing!

Do you have any mates that say things like this?

@Popitdontstopit

What's that meme I've seen, "never mock someone for mispronouncing a word, as it means they learned it by reading". Something like that anyway.
Love this! What a mean spirited thread.
ShaunaTheSheep · 04/09/2021 08:11

@Kithic
Charade pronounced as sha-rad, not aha-raid

ShaunaTheSheep · 04/09/2021 08:12

Aha-raad (bloody autocorrect)

Sparkletastic · 04/09/2021 08:12

@MeltedCheeseonTop

MIL calls Ciabatta See-A-Batta
Mine calls it ja-patta. Took us a while to work out that she wasn't after an Indian flatbread to accompany her pasta.
Sparkletastic · 04/09/2021 08:17

And MIL's most recent was offering DD a bottle of JLo. She had orange and passion fruit or mango and apple varieties in stock Smile

@Blueeyedgirl21

Gatorade to rhyme with charade is genuinely funny though 😬
How s it supposed to be pronounced then?

Gator-ade rhymes with char-ade, I don’t get how it’s meant to be pronounced if not this way.

Afonavon · 04/09/2021 08:21

Well I guess the reading= mispronunciations applys to me re the cherade pronunciation.

Me again!

Just looked it up, and realised the the American pronunciation is char-ade rhymng with Gatorade. I was raised by an American Dad, so there we go.

@EIIa

Despite having lived in Spain for years and repeatedly having guests...

My sister still calls paella pie-Ella and talks about koritzo (chorizo)
😂😂

I reeeaaaally hope you don’t drop ‘pie eh uh’ into an English conversation. I would spit my wine out….
LadyOfTheFlowers · 04/09/2021 08:41

MIL says 'fruneral' instead of funeral

Eminybob · 04/09/2021 09:00

My dad’s wife calls her grandson Alfie “Arfy”
Not an accent thing as her daughter with the same accent is capable of pronouncing it correctly. Just baffles me.

LargeBouquet · 04/09/2021 09:16

@Holly60, but why would someone deliberately mispronounce a word to spare the feelings of someone else?

LemonRedwood · 04/09/2021 09:19

@shreddednips

And 'Gatorade' to rhyme with 'charade'
I'm now wondering which one of these I'm saying wrong Confused

I say the last syllable of both like "aid". Is that not right?

cheesemarmitepanini · 04/09/2021 09:36

I say char-ard so someone pronouncing Gatorade as Gator-ard is funny

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 04/09/2021 09:58

@BashfulClam

You just gave me a happy Flowers my granny used to say beege. Would give my all to hear her say it just once more.

Soubriquet · 04/09/2021 10:07

Gatorade rhymes with lemonade

Charade rhymes with lard in this country

In America it would also rhyme with lemonade

BashfulClam · 04/09/2021 10:17

@FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge I’ll get my mum to record it in her broad Ayrshire accent. She said ‘aw that hoose doactir does is stick up mirrors and paint everywhere beege!’

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 04/09/2021 10:21

@BashfulClam
She’s not far wrong though wi her review o the Hoose Doctor Grin

BashfulClam · 04/09/2021 10:26

@FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge true, she’s no. I just burst out laughing though.

I'm so confused by the whole Gatorade thing and feel I'm the only one who doesn't get it 😆. Charade, Gatorade and lemonade all end in the same song here and I'm not in America?!
cheesemarmitepanini · 04/09/2021 12:13

Char-ard here.

So gator-ard sounds stupid.

Why is everyone so confused

liveforsummer · 04/09/2021 12:37

Maybe because many of us don't say char-ard. Not sure where you've found an extra R from 😆. I say char ayde like gator ayde and lemon ayde
cheesemarmitepanini · 04/09/2021 12:38

Bit like grass, glass, bath, charade, transport (long a) etc etc etc etc

Anyway, I'm still amused by 'min-yons' and have adopted this at home

mrsdavegrohl · 04/09/2021 12:42

Charade, gatorade and lemonade all end the same in Scotland.
