"That Griggio stuff"

DuchessOfDisaster · 02/09/2021 14:06

One of my friends always preferred rose wine, semi-sweet or sweeter wines. I forgot that and one day when I went over for supper took a bottle of Pinot Grigio. She liked it and started to buy it for herself.

Now, she refers to it as "that Griggio stuff" (pronounced with a hard g!) It's embarrassingly amusing!

Do you have any mates that say things like this?

My bestie says "mouse turd" instead of mustard

I'm worried this will never be unseen

This reminds me of an episode of Great News where the old school news anchor refers to having interviewed “Peen-elope Cruzz” (Penelope Cruz). It made me laugh a lot😬

I was pronouncing Covid with a short 'o' sound until another family member pointed it out to me Blush tbf though due to severe anxiety I had been avoiding all pandemic related news and had only ever seen the word written down. She made me feel a right wally though the way she mocked me over a family FaceTime.

My sons dad mispronounces things on a daily basis and it makes my day (in a nice way). There are too many to remember them all but things like 'iburofen' 'once smitten twice shy' ..and one of my favourites is that 'west end girls' song from the 80s he would sing along to the radio 'in a west end town in a denemwaaahh' ...I had to listen to the singers closely before I realised it was 'dead end world' 🤣 but I still love to sing that line!

BigWhooper · 03/09/2021 19:19

Michael Gove wants you to pronounce Covid with a short o so it doesn't sound like his name. It's how he always says it. So at least you're making someone happy!

ParvaAvis · 03/09/2021 19:30

I have a friend who pronounces 'breakfast' as 'breakfrast', with an 'r' in the middle. And another friend who can't ever say 'spaghetti', she says 'buscetti'. Both drive me nuts.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 03/09/2021 19:40

Ooh, years ago I was gently corrected by my SIL when I pronounced the Gris in Pinot Gris phonetically.

In my defence I did Spanish not French at school, but I still wince when I remember it.

Belleager · 03/09/2021 21:16

Once smitten twice shy is excellent Grin @Raggedyanabell

For all our fall outs he really does make me laugh!

@LargeBouquet

I know somebody who pronounced Yves Saint Laurent as Yervez sant lorrent.

I'm going to call him that from now on.

I say it too 🤣
Raggedyanabell · 03/09/2021 21:39

I know it's not the same as when an adult mispronounces it but when my little boy says buscetti instead of spaghetti, I love it so much...it makes me want to squish his face 😆
I regularly make buscetti and meatballs or buscetti bolognese just to hear him say it 😁

Haha well at least I'm not completely alone on that then 😅

Min-yun is right isn’t it ?! I’ve a strong Manchester accent though so people who ‘speak proper’ probably think every thing I say is wrong

If I heard someone say ‘choreetho’ and they weren’t either a fluent Spanish speaker ie. Native speaker or lives there a long time, I’d think ‘absolute wanker’ I’m afraid

dollybird · 03/09/2021 21:47

Mil has a few 'acrost' for across, 'subamarine' (yes, singing yellow subamarine 😐), and she calls Whitley Neil gin Whiteley Neil. DH says cullender (for colander), and I once knew someone who said breaksfast.

Re chorizo, I pronounce it with a soft z, if it's meant to be choritzo or choritho I just can't bring myself to say it either of those ways!

shreddednips · 03/09/2021 21:56

My mother says triceratops in a way I've never heard anyone say it before. I rather wonder if she's saying it right and everyone else is saying it wrong because she says it with such emphasis, as though she knows something I don't and is trying to correct me.

She says it 'triss-ra-tops' with a short 'i' as in 'igloo'.

shreddednips · 03/09/2021 21:57

She also says 'having a Caesar' instead of having a Caesarean section.

shreddednips · 03/09/2021 21:59

And 'Gatorade' to rhyme with 'charade'

bellamountain · 03/09/2021 22:03

My sister always says what's it according rather than regarding.

rubydoobydoo · 03/09/2021 22:12

My grandma loved watching Agatha Christie's Poirot - but she couldn't say it and called him Pyro.

Even though she watched it every time it was on the TV and I'm sure they said his name a few times in it.

I decided to teach her how to say it one day and she thought she had it - and announced triumphantly, "Pwar- rar!"

He went back to being Pyro by the week after Grin

Blueeyedgirl21 · 03/09/2021 22:20

Gatorade to rhyme with charade is genuinely funny though 😬

LargeBouquet · 03/09/2021 22:40

@shreddednips

She also says 'having a Caesar' instead of having a Caesarean section.
That’s kind of brilliant.
bobbeebob · 04/09/2021 07:43

Why is paella pronounced the Spanish way pretentious but tortilla is just normal ?

Should we all say tortilla with an L sound?

Polkadots2021 · 04/09/2021 07:45

@Popitdontstopit

What's that meme I've seen, "never mock someone for mispronouncing a word, as it means they learned it by reading". Something like that anyway.
Love this!
Kithic · 04/09/2021 07:54

You might like to know that calzone actually means trouser leg- hard to say how it became a foldover pizza!

Because a trouser leg is all the way round?
