"That Griggio stuff"

One of my friends always preferred rose wine, semi-sweet or sweeter wines. I forgot that and one day when I went over for supper took a bottle of Pinot Grigio. She liked it and started to buy it for herself.

Now, she refers to it as "that Griggio stuff" (pronounced with a hard g!) It's embarrassingly amusing!

Do you have any mates that say things like this?

Despite having lived in Spain for years and repeatedly having guests...

My sister still calls paella pie-Ella and talks about koritzo (chorizo)
😂😂

But 'paella' is pronounced pie-ella when speaking English. Saying pie-eh-uh would sound really affected unless she's actually speaking Spanish.

Agree on chorizo (well, to 'choritzo', wouldn't go as far as 'choritho')!

I think people that affect regional accents when saying a word/name of that region sound like pretentious twits.

I try not to wince when my sister asks for an EXpresso Grin

WhatsAppening · 02/09/2021 15:14

My sil does this a lot. She drinks Pressco (Prosecco) and for a while her son was Minions mad but she called them Min-yons with a really heavy emphasis on Yons and a gap between the syllables. Even in a conversation with me saying the word correctly she persists in her funny little pronunciations.

I don’t think it’s an affectation either, I think she’s just a bit odd.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/09/2021 15:15

We have a family joke of pronouncing pinot grigio as 'Grin-go'. We've all made ourselves look like twits at least once by ordering that in a bar...

There’s a lot of nicely painted muriels down by the old railway arches

What's that meme I've seen, "never mock someone for mispronouncing a word, as it means they learned it by reading".
Something like that anyway.

Rememberallball · 02/09/2021 15:34

My husband does it thinking he’s being funny; fajitas becomes fa-gee-tas
paella becomes pie-gella (rhymes it with Nigella)
There are others but I can’t think of them athe moment!

ZenNudist · 02/09/2021 15:40

I had a friend who always used to correct me saying jalapeño to hal-ah-peno. He was annoying but not wrong. I have to say I do sometimes say some words the correct way even when speaking English. I don't think too hard about it and I certainly don't mock someone for saying things incorrectly.

My favourite was the friend who ate ee-mental cheese (emmental).

LargeBouquet · 02/09/2021 15:53

I once sat next to some people on a balcony at the NT on the South Bank, who kept referring to their Pinot Grigio as 'Pee Grigg'. 'Bung us over another glug of that Pee Grigg, there's a love.'

Cathie102 · 02/09/2021 15:58

My manager at work always says pacific instead of specific. And she uses the word a lot!!!! Sometimes I wonder would it be a kindness to tell her?!

I deliberately say Car-don-ayy a la Kath and Kim to watch my posh friends wince Grin

PlinkPlankPlunk · 02/09/2021 15:59

This is probably not the time to mention that my friends and I spent a lot of our youth calling it Penis Grigio.

I know - but it was funny at the time

@PlinkPlankPlunk you must know my DH, he calls it Grey Penis!
Aposterhasnoname · 02/09/2021 16:09

You think that’s bad? I have a friend who goes clamping, yes clamping, during which she drinks pin-not grig-oh, and often visits a spuh-ah for a mess-age

HPLikecraft · 02/09/2021 16:20

My DH was talking with DD about Afghanistan - a bit of history and the current situation.

He knows more than I do, so I didn't want to complain but he kept saying "Tally-ban" and "Afghany-stan" . Made me cringe!

iklboo · 02/09/2021 16:21

BIL3 has jally pee nee ohs on his tortilla (to rhyme with gorilla).

MIL likes peripherals (profiteroles) and takes anti-flammables or her arthur-itis.

Mum talks about Cali-fo-nee-yar and putting tar-pole-ian (tarpaulin) on the roof.

My ex's mother would also pronounce Michelle Pfeiffer as Michelle Petifer.

Biden says Tally-ban. I think it makes them sound unrealistically cuddly.
Soubriquet · 02/09/2021 16:29

We all say min-yuns around here

You wouldn’t hear anyone saying mini-uns

It’s definitely a regional thing

My MIL went to the doctors for a GCSE (ECG)
