"That Griggio stuff"

DuchessOfDisaster · 02/09/2021 14:06

One of my friends always preferred rose wine, semi-sweet or sweeter wines. I forgot that and one day when I went over for supper took a bottle of Pinot Grigio. She liked it and started to buy it for herself.

Now, she refers to it as "that Griggio stuff" (pronounced with a hard g!) It's embarrassingly amusing!

Do you have any mates that say things like this?

@LargeBouquet

I once sat next to some people on a balcony at the NT on the South Bank, who kept referring to their Pinot Grigio as 'Pee Grigg'. 'Bung us over another glug of that Pee Grigg, there's a love.'
I heard someone order “savvy b” at a bar and it is now what DH and I call Sauvignon blanc.
Soubriquet · 02/09/2021 16:32

And it’s not Tally-ban?

What is it then? Cos that’s how I’ve always heard it

Blankspace4 · 02/09/2021 16:32

It is Tally-ban though isn’t it? In terms of how it’s pronounced?

DH has this habit of pronouncing french place names in a french accent. Gives me the ick

@Letsallscreamatthesistene

I think people that affect regional accents when saying a word/name of that region sound like pretentious twits.
No, it's just saying the correct name. There is no translation of Paella, just the Spanish word so I don't understand why people mispronounce it. Why is it easy to say cappuccino with a "ch" and not paella with a "y" sound?
MatildaIThink · 02/09/2021 16:44

I used to work with someone who pronounced tortilla "Tor Tiller" and jalapeno as "Ja La Pee Nos", which might not sound like a regular problem, but our office was next to a Wahaca and she used to get food from there 2-3 times a week.

Other than that the usual stuff, expresso rather than espresso, Pacific instead of specific, haich instead of aich.

pecanmix · 02/09/2021 16:46

I have a friend who kept telling me she was getting okra coloured dining room chairs. I was confused that she had picked green as she says how much she doesn't like it. Anyway, she meant ochre.

Well, one could say the same for your username, which arguably pokes fun at a vulnerable individual who was so moved by her experience of Michelangelo that she broke down into hysterical wailing, and was then retraumatised by being laughed at by about 98% of Mumsnet. Grin
WhatsAppening · 02/09/2021 16:47

@Soubriquet

We all say min-yuns around here

You wouldn’t hear anyone saying mini-uns

It’s definitely a regional thing

Yes, except she’s a local who has never lived anywhere else. Not an accent thing.

My mother has recently discovered Khor eyes oh (chorizo) and she ordered the khor eyes oh lingueeeeen (chorizo linguine) in a restaurant recently.

@HPLikecraft

My DH was talking with DD about Afghanistan - a bit of history and the current situation.

He knows more than I do, so I didn't want to complain but he kept saying "Tally-ban" and "Afghany-stan" . Made me cringe!

What's wrong with those?
Geamhradh · 02/09/2021 17:05

@Bloodypunkrockers, yes I'm confused that someone is either pronouncing Afghanistan perfectly correctly, or pronouncing it as Afghanwhystan. Confused

As ever these threads fill up with piss-taking of other people that MNers consider to be less intelligent, but really only serve to show it's the MNer themselves that has a lack of knowledge.

Taleban, for example. Could be pronounced with that "e" as an /e/, or a schwa (given the syllable is unstressed, or an /I/ as an unstressed "e" is very often rendered as /I/
All three are fine as far as I'm aware, but the most used would be schwa or /I/.

Bloodypunkrockers · 02/09/2021 17:13

I'm amazed that the OP was a bottle of wine for supper.

I have hot choclate and sometimes a biscuit

iklboo · 02/09/2021 17:35

Wrong thread @slowtik?

Gubanc · 02/09/2021 17:39

Well... most people order a lattey in a coffee shop.

coodawoodashooda · 02/09/2021 17:40

This.

Shirleyphallus · 02/09/2021 17:40

I’ve called Pinot Grigio “pinot greeno” for such a long time that I forget it isn’t the right pronunciation

MintyGreenDream · 02/09/2021 17:55

My dad once ordered an "Expresso" as he thought it would be made quicker.I kid you not.

sunnygardenday · 02/09/2021 17:57

iklboo · 02/09/2021 17:58
