Underwear under pjs.

Dd attended a sleepover and told me that all the girls wear pants under their pjs and they laughed at my dd as she just put her pjs on with no underwear.
I've never worn underwear under my nightwear. I thought it was good to let the area breathe at night!!!
Or is this just something my mum has taught me and does everyone else wear underwear under nightwear?!
Worried I've been doing it wrong for the past 40 years!

No pants. Let air circulate! Never occurred to me.

thatfuckingtent · 15/08/2021 22:05

I don't wear pants under mine but I do wear a fresh pair every night

How much air do think is circulating under a duvet and between closed thighs. Often a cotton layer is more hygienic that letting it all mingle between the sweat and skin 😬

I’ve worn knickers all my life at night and never once had a yeast infection. I don’t understand “need to air” (unless people sleep in polyester thongs).

tiredanddangerous · 15/08/2021 22:07

I've always worn pants under my pjs and have never had thrush.

How much air do people think is circulating round their vulva between closed thighs and under pj bottoms and a duvet? Confused

Boatonthehorizon · 15/08/2021 22:08

The older generation are quite well conditioned to not wear knickers to bed it seems. My nana (b.1896) was the same. She didnt even wear them under her skirts in the day. She wore a belt (corset) to go out but removed it at home, under her day dress. She wore a slip but no knickers. Same reasons as above.

SleepingStandingUp · 15/08/2021 22:10

Naked

But if sleeping communally and thus in pjs, I'd put knickers on just for the extra cover

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 15/08/2021 22:10

Had this conversation with my dd today - l never wear underwear under pj's but she always puts clean knickers on to go to bed

leonpride · 15/08/2021 22:13

No underwear in bed is a no from me. I don't want fluid on my bedsheets or pyjamas (coming from somebody who used to go no underwear for a short time)

Unless your legs are pried open all night is there really any airflow? I'm not convinced there's much benefit of being without knickers unless your up and walking about

TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 15/08/2021 22:13

I'm a bit of both, PJ bottoms on I wear knickers because I only sleep in PJ bottoms when I'm menstruating. Helps with any rouge leaks.

When no need for a pad I sleep in a nighty and no knickers.

leonpride · 15/08/2021 22:14

@StevieNix

No pants unless on my period I’m wondering why previous posters are saying ‘eww’ etc. How is it any different than wearing knickers that touch your vulva; as long as you change your pj bottoms regularly (I have fresh shorts/trousers every night)

Because you change your icky undies everyday, but sheets stay on for a week. So if there's anything on there, it's staying on til it gets washed. Underwear is easily flung in the basket

FreakinFrankNFurter · 15/08/2021 22:17

I normally sleep naked but when i occasionally sleep with PJs, like last week when camping so wore shorts PJs, I didnt put pants on.
I really don't understand what's gross about that

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 15/08/2021 22:18

Always pants. I'm actually uncomfortable and can't settle without. Tbf, they are my pjs as I sleep in a top and pants.

As for airing, unless you're sleeping legs akimbo ,no covers etc, there's not much airing happening anyways is there? Definitely no breathing unless you developed gills down there.

YukoandHiro · 15/08/2021 22:19

Oh not this again.

I'm team no pants but does it even matter? dd can wear pants at sleepovers if she prefers

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 15/08/2021 22:20

@LemonRoses

Underwear in bed is decidedly unhealthy.
Hmmm, I've worn them every night for over 50 years and mine has never suffocated from "not breathing"...or had any other issues. It's a old wives tale, either way is fine
CharlotteRose90 · 15/08/2021 22:23

Unless I’m on my period then it’s no pants under pjs. Just feels weird otherwise you need to let the area breathe.!

PattyPan · 15/08/2021 22:26

I keep my knickers on (my bits have no problem ‘breathing’ since my knickers and pyjamas are 100% cotton anyway). DP doesn’t wear pants under his though.

Hummingbird25 · 15/08/2021 22:28

Definitely no pants! I never knew wearing PJ's and pants at the same time was a thing! Learnt something knew today! I love being free down there and it's so much more comfy. I usually wear the same PJ's for a few nights too and don't think it's gross!

NotMyCat · 15/08/2021 22:31

Either. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't

LouLou789 · 15/08/2021 22:31

My mum always taught me to wear pants under a nightie but not jamas 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m struggling to remember how long the PJs were supposed to last, though. I suspect the answer is “a week” 😳

Nowadays (in my 6os) I wear a longish nightshirt and shorts-style pants but when I was younger I just wore nothing.

LemonRoses · 15/08/2021 22:35

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer I don’t think I mentioned breathing - to the best of my knowledge, genitals don’t breathe. They do however increase risk of fungal infections and bacterial vaginosis. Higher risks of UTIs for women and risk of sperm reduction for men.

Definitely not old wives tales.

headlock · 15/08/2021 22:38

No pants in bed, or under pj's if I'm wearing them. Bits have to breath! I only wear them if I have my period.

80sMum · 15/08/2021 22:39

My granddaughter insists on wearing knickers under her pyjamas - and then wonders why she feels hot in bed!

I'd never heard of anyone wearing underwear beneath pyjamas before DGD came to stay. To me, it would feel like sleeping with my clothes on. I can't help but feel that it's not a good idea. I like loose, baggy, pyjamas. Anything tight or restrictive would be very uncomfortable.

firstimemamma · 15/08/2021 22:42

I'm also team no pants unless on my period. I love how some people who prefer pants have to add 'eww' or 'gross' etc to whatever they're written, it's so rude! Each to their own I say.

Absolutely none of that is try if you are wearing cotton underwear. More likely without with close contact of thighs, sweat accumulating and moving etc
