Serial killer name change

I really don't know what to do. I recently got married to a wonderful man and I have always wanted to take my partner's name (I am a feminist, it is a choice I want to make). Unfortunately my first name combined with his last name is the name of a very famous serial killer. Before we got married I said I would deal with that issue as it was important for us to have the same name (and I would like to be traditional and take his name), but now that it is time to change my name on bank cards etc I am getting cold feet. I can't wrap my head around introducing myself as this killer??!! My husband is upset as I am going back on our agreement..

What should I do? Could you change it knowing what that name means to most people?

Your husband sounds like an idiot.

Either double barrel or don’t do it.

Or if you are so desperate to take his name (yeah really feminist to prioritise taking a man’s name over your own happiness and mental health Hmm ) then change your first name.

@horrayforharoldlloyd

'Maiden name' .... you aren't a feminist and he isn't an ally.
Telling another women how to do feminism isn’t feminist either

There is absolutely nothing wrong with changing your name to represent the union you have created. Nothing

I actually didn’t do it myself but there is nothing wrong with it in 2021. It is not 1865, there are laws and protections for women.

@CloudPop I think it's worse too 😂😂

There must be hundreds of sweet old ladies in the UK called Rose West and they are probably unaware of the connection

Sweet old ladies can still read newspapers and watch tv you know.

Sweet old ladies can still read newspapers and watch tv you know.

Indeed. Plus, it all fully emerged nearly 30 years ago, so they were 'sweet middle-aged ladies' then, or maybe we could just call them.... women.

To be honest if someone with the exact same name as me were found out to be a terrible serial killer or something, would think about changing my name to escape the association, even though it was my name before it gained that notoriety.

idontunderstandbananas · 07/08/2021 14:39

he just pointed out that said I would do something before we were married and now I have changed my mind

He has a point you know. How many woman have come on here and said 'He told me he would do X, but now he won't and he thinks I should get over it.'

I'm more curious why your husband was wanting to be married to 'Mrs. Serial Killer'. What were his points for thinking this was a good idea? TBH Even now it is 'Mrs. Serial and Mr. Killer'. People will still put it together if it's such a well known name.

Surely older women are more likely to know exactly who rose west was

@Somuddled

'I will keep my name but give the children his' This is my single most hated sentence I read on mumsnet. It always comes from people who say they are feminists. Sure you are pet.
Did you just call another feminist "pet" because she isnt as feminist as you are? 😆🙈

Leaving aside the fact that talking down to any woman for making a choice isnt particularly feminist, but there are other issues she might be getting behind; under funded refuges, childcare issues, pay gaps, trafficking... you dont know. No need to talk down to another feminist like this.
